The only experience I have with Chevy stuff is the V8 I put in my LandCruiser. And that's one of the best mods I've ever done!
I'm about to buy a 1979 1/2 ton 4x4 Chevy truck to part out . My question is what kind of running gear is typical for that type of truck?
It's got an automatic trans, I don't know what kind. And what kind of transfer case would it be ?
What's the front axle and what was typical for the rear ?
I know that this kind of stuff may very, but is typical for a stock truck of that year and model?

79 k-10, there could be alot of different parts, but if auto it should be a th-350, w/ NP 203 full time unit, could have a NP 205, the shifter will either have 5 positions (high, high lock, neutral, low and low lock) which would be a NP 203 full time unit(doesn't mean that its not been converted to part time) the NP 205 will be normal high, low, 2wd, neutral. As far as axles the Dana 44, or a 10 bolt front(I have owned 79's with both) and a GM 12 Bolt rear. GM produced so many you could see 3 trucks all with different combo's. The NP 205 is most desirable, but has a high low range 1.96:1. The TH-350 is strong if built properly. Axle ratios can go from 3.08 to 4.10. Hope this helps, jesse

That's the stuff I wanted to know :)
I'm going to take a good look at it tomarrow.
When you say a 10 bolt front, is that similar to a Dana 44 ?
Which is better ?
And also how do you guys rate a 12 bolt rear ?

I prefer a 44 front over a 10 bolt, and the chevy 12 bolt is fine with light weight rigs and smaller tires, its a c-clip axle, that is prone to bending, but warn has a high dollar kit that will really improve the axles strength.
