Dana 80 pics please I might buy one for 500.00. It has 4.63s and a stock locker and discs brand new on the pallet. I can get two of them maybe. What would they be worth in the paper? 1000 or more?

man a 80 is huge it will hang up on everything. you might be better off with a 150 dollar 14 bolt or dana 70. mike

80 isn't that huge, but you really gotta run the tires to match.

I've seen an 80 rear (OMG those disc calipers must require a cherry picker to get off) and a D70 front. Think he was running 38-40" tires, clearance under the diff didn't look that bad.

I am going to look at them this week. they are seriously brand new on the pallet. I might put one in the rear of my tow rig.I think its a little big for a yj with 38.5 sx's.

Buy it...then you can run those 44" swampers you've always wanted (unfortunately you'll probably have less ground clearance than you do now:D)

I have a narrowed 80 in my scout. It is big but not as much hang down as you may think. Only like plus or minus 1" more than a 60. I'm in the process of clearancing it and should have better than 60 clearance when it's done. Another big issue is weight. That thing is heavy. I mean real heavy. Yet to get it weighed but it's easily heavier than a 60 front.:(

Hey Scoutaholic I am curious what it took to narrow. Were you able to have the stock shafts resplined or did you have to find aftermarket ones?Did you have any problems with the brakes being so big or lines? I am building a YJ and I plan on running at least 38.5 14.5 sx's or 38.5 16s if not 39.5 boggers. What is the diameter of the shafts? I would love to run the d80 if I can just to have something diff. and cool.

Now that I have my head out check the BOM on the axle tube for this 4 digit #2810 or 2811. If it is a 2810 then it is 35 spline where a 2811 is 37. I am pretty sure an 80 has an 11" ring gear also so with enough shaving you might get it pretty close to a 60.

To narrow is no big thing. It's a Dana axle only on steroids. I did not reuse the stock shafts but had alloys made by dutchman. Here again just standard 1 1/2" 35 spline stuff. Some 80's are 37 spline but I don't know much about those. Best of my knowledge you need to stick with 35 spline in order to get the Detroit for it. Brakes are huge. That's what sold me on this particular axle. I have a auto with super low gears so I need the huge disk's to stop. It's set up for dually so the brakes are far enough inboard to not be a problem of interferance with the wheel. In stock form the callipers hung below the axle. To fix this simply unbolt the backing plate and redrill new holes. Simple fix. The lines are standard bajo stuff although I don't remember what size. I did upgrade the master cyl for the added brake fluid volume. Those callipers are dual piston and very large bore. I run 38.5" tires and rarely have clearance problems. I still think weight is a bigger issue. When your rig gets good and twisted up all that weight puts tons of stress on the frame and such. I haven't had any cracks or anything yet but there is potential for a problem. Been about 2 years so far with this axle.

I thought of one problem it might have and that it might have the metric wheel pattern so your wheel choices are limited.

Just an FYI, the 2500 Dodges (single wheel only) with a manual trans use a hybrid 70/80, among other problems there is no Detroit available. (Autos use a true 70). Disk brakes started partway through the '01 model year.

The 3500s (dual wheel only) with either trans use a true 80.

Both use the conventional 8 on 6 1/2" pattern.

I bought a dana 80 basket-case axle to use for figuring stuff out.
The rear disks are pretty big. The calipers are equivilent to ford
front d-60/50 calipers. I like the internal parking brake drum.
The biggest issue is the metric pattern. no way around it. The
backside of the hubs has supports for the studs, you would have to remove the studs, weld-up all the holes, then redrill all of them
to complete it as a 8 on 6.5 set-up. too much work. my axle had
the 35 spline shafts in it. the axle tubes are like 4.5 or 5", and
like 3/4 thick.........

If I don't go rear steer, then I will be using the sup duty rear brake disks, on the sup duty calipers, with the internal parking
brake drum, and running all this on dana 60HD hubs.
it's still lots of work.....
