: 96-97 8.25 carrier?

I know the axles grew larger in size from 96 to 97 in the 8.25 axle. What I need to know is, can you switch the carrier and axles from a 97 or later into the 96 or older housing?

96 and older: Axle Diameter: 1.17" Spline: 27

97 and newer: Axle Diameter: 1.21" Spline: 29

Thanks!

WTF is an 8.25 and why would you want to use it as an axle? I'm thinking the size of a dildo???

All kidding aside isn't this better asked on JU? I don't think anyone here even knows anything about those. In fact even my wife was feeling my pain I can't afford to buy the front RR 60 in the for sale section

Yes, you can switch them. Do not tell anyone here, but I run one. I mean, WTF, you need 60's front and rear you :rainbow: :flipoff2:

The idea of an easy SOA for a YJ and getting a little better axle out of the deal.

The 8.25 in the XJ should bolt up into a YJ and it's already spring over. The 96 and older 8.25s are smaller, but the 97 and later are similar in size to a D44. With no heavy modifications it could be a cheap alternative.

I would assume that you can find an older 8.25 for cheap, put in a Detroit and upgrade your axle shafts to the larger axle and spline count and you have a decent axle that will handle 33's maybe 35's on it.

I run one in my Cherokee too. Never had any problems, but they are C-clip axles.

Don't know if someone makes a C-Clip eliminator kit, but you could add a disk brake converstion to help keep the axles in the tubes after breakage.

Yo Blkntan....if you are helping someone in particular on this swap and they need a 8.25 out of a 00 XJ let me know. I have a line on one for $250.

Has 3.55s

1. No Detroit for the 8.25. Weld it, or Powertrax No-Slip.

2. C-clip eliminators suck for offroad vehicles.

Right now, this is all theory. We are doing the research right now. I also know that you can only go 4.56 for gears so that kind of limits it to 33's for tire height. One of the reasons for saying it's a cheap alternative and not the holy grail. But for someone that doesn't wheel like most of the people on this borad, it is another choice. But it needs to be bolt in. No fabrication of anything.

No, you can go 4.88s on the 8.25

Tiff, who makes a 4.88? I searched high and low and couldn't find them.

I did some major searching tonight. Found out I was wrong about Detroits, and quite surprised to find out they are made for both the 27 spline and 29 spline 8.25. I did not find 4.88 gears.

Call Drivetrain Direct. They had them last June when I did my gear swap.

Drivetrain told me they had them too....... for the D35 which they INSISTED I had because the 8.25 never came in an XJ

I didn't check with DtD a year ago when I regeared my XJ for 4.88 gears. But a powerpack (all gears, bearings, seals, etc.) was available for a D30/C8.25 combo. One price, one charge.

The 825 holds up to wheeling with 35s in mi 99XJ it has 456s and a no-slip
