: Not the usual tcase clocking question

I am looking at clocking my transfercase to get a flat belly. I've got all the logistics out of the way... it is a plate adapter for an FJ40 so all I need to do is drill and tap 5 new holes.

My concern is about burning the transfercase up when using it in this configuration. The rig in question will see extensive on road use in addition to hard core offroad us.

I've estimated that I'll be rotating the transfercase up about 16 degrees. This moves the lowest edge of the transfercase UP about 2.5 inches.

I do NOT have the option of raising the transfercase only because the output flange currently sits at zero degrees. I also do not have the option of raising both the engine AND transfercase because it isn't physically possible without adding significant extra work(ie cutting up the firewall)

At what point does lubrication and cooling of a transfercase become an issue when clocking them?

Should I add a new fill hole that would maintain the amount of fluid? Or should I base a new fill hole upon the fluid level(ie covers the idler shaft)?

Any useful input would be GREATLY appreciated.
John

If you really want to, you could simply overfill the box. Fill it up like normal, put the plug in, and add whatever amount (no help there) you need to through the shifter's hole in the top. No need for new holes. :)

I have seen this covered alot on here, if you want to do it right just do a search and you will find the info you are looking for.

OC, I did a search using clock* lubricat*. I got 13 hits of which this is one of.

None of them specifically gave any useful information other than the usual "don't worry about it". Or the famous "it has a pickup tube" which is NOT the case with the FJ40 tcase.

Given that it is 200 or so miles for me to get to the Rubicon or other good offoading areas and I'm NOT trailering my rig, I do feel a need to look into this. I don't need to burn a transfercase up at speed due to not knowing all the ramifications of clocking :p

My buddy clocked his case up for a flat belly. 350/sm420/cruiser 3 speed case. He fills it thru the cover on the back. He drives the 1.5 hours to the rubicon on a regular basis and used to drive it to work everyday until he got his acura.
