: Hydraulic cylinders
Jason M 11-20-2001, 08:37 AM I have found a couple of diffferent types of hydraulic cylinders for a steering conversion. Cheif and Energy. Bout the same price but the Cheif usually has a 1 1/8" rod vs the energy has a 1 1/16" rod. Energy is made in the USA. Cheif is a "quality import" Anyone know the differences between them? If one is better than the other???
Lakerat?
broncorob 11-20-2001, 09:52 AM Not really sure who is actually better, but Chief is a much bigger name. Sometimes it means something somethims it don't mean crap.
Charly 11-20-2001, 04:45 PM I'd be interested in where you are finding the Energy's.
And are these 2'"x 8"? Have you found any 1.5" x 8"?
Thanks
Charly
nasvik 11-20-2001, 05:15 PM Ive been digging, and I've found a 1.5" bore, 8" cylinder:
Here (http://www.baileynet.com/baileynet/productBrowse.asp?sku=210108+++++++) I don't really like the ends, but...
Has anyone found a cylinder with Heim ends? I've seen them from a race shop but that's about it.

Charly 11-20-2001, 05:24 PM Paul,
That 1.5" bore cylinder you linked to would be perfect for me (I'll use clevis ends) , except for the $146 tag on it.
I wish I could find one cheaper, I only seem to be able to find the 2" bore ones for less cash.

Shaker 11-20-2001, 05:33 PM Stay away from that 1 it looks a little scary on the 'attachment" ends.....I use these "Chief" rams from this place here http://www.agri-supply.com/catmain/2500001.htm I use the (Part # 34948) and to top it off it's on $50.00 + S&H...:D
nasvik 11-20-2001, 05:39 PM Shaker - I may be blind, but I don't see a 1.5" bore cylinder on that page.....
Paul
Charly 11-20-2001, 05:41 PM Shaker,
What retracted length are those? I'd really prefer an 18.25" one, but I think I may have to settle for the standard 20.25" cylinders.
Also, what ends do these have? If clevis' are they 1" pins?
I'm really looking for a 1.5 x 8 cylinder with a 18.25 retracted length, but they seem to be impossible to find for a reasonable price.
Thanks,
Charly

Yes they are clevis with 1 in. pins.....
RHINO 11-20-2001, 09:00 PM dont have an addy here, but northern tool sells both prince and cheif. 2" bore by 8" stroke. both are under $75. i dont see a 1.5" bore though.
TheLakeRat 11-20-2001, 10:15 PM Sorry but I've never used an energy ram, Used the hell out of lion and chief and have had no complaints.
Jason M 11-21-2001, 08:02 AM Agri supply is the place that I was planning on getting mine from. I figure for $50 the price can't be beat...
Lakerat, On a land Criuser is the 2"x8 or the 2x6 better??? I was thinking probably the 2x8".
TheLakeRat 11-21-2001, 11:24 PM If you are useing the stock pump I would suggest useing a 1.5" ram lenght will depend on your steering setup. You'll just have to measure.
4N JEEP 11-22-2001, 03:27 PM Nasvik check out columbus cylinders they do 1-7 inch bore lots of different ends. call surplus center 1-800-488-3407
desteurm 11-22-2001, 03:46 PM I would be afraid to rely on a ductile iron end link, I would cut it off and weld on some 4140 ends! Just my $0.02 worth!

What about using a Hydraulic Ram from one that came as a Hydraulic steering Ram?
I'm wondering if a Ford Power Assist Ram would work? Came in ear,y 70's Fords to help the manual boxes.
dawhipp 11-24-2001, 05:14 PM Hey that's a neat idea. Even the '82 and earlier Vettes used the power steering ram setup. Anybody got the dimensions for one of those?
SHERPA 11-25-2001, 07:05 AM I'll throw in my .02 here... I just recently saw a forklift being
hauled on a trailer that had a pretty beefy hydro-cyl on it for
the steering. The cylinder appeared to be at least a 2" bore
unit, with about 8" --estimate length in stroke... But here's
the part that caught my eye... The cylinder end on this unit
had a huge tie rod end on it.. hmmm, beefy! and the rod end
also had a very large tie rod end on it..... The plate that the
rod-end attached to the tie-rod was held in place with 2 ubolts
attaching it. (You could weld it yourself, or do like this was set
up......
The brand of forklift was a "Wiggins".... It looked like an
outdoor-type, pick-up sized rubber-tired forklift in about
the 5-8k rating... I saw no "model" numbers on the lift
itself..
I plan on calling a few lift-places on monday and start looking to get one of these cylinder set-ups...

66CJdean 11-25-2001, 09:08 AM Most forklifts run that type of setup and are a good place to get rams if you know of a place that sells new/used parts for them.
