ok hers a ? that ive been bouncing around the old melon
Why not use d30's under a sami, There weeker!! but a sami is lighter than most all trail rigs. Is there realy going to be a problem. I plan to run 35" no bigger and a stock engine maybe a 1.6 some day. Why wont this work?
the prices on used d30's locked geared with discs are nest to nothing...
Just wondering what your opions are am I :smokin: something

Can you get away with 4.88 gearing?

I think the previous message asked "Will 4.88's be enough?" Those Zuk motorsl have no torque so you have to gear it way down, my 4.62's and 4.89 t-case felt ok with 33's, 35's definately would be marginal. Course now you can get a 6:1 t-case........

You can break a Toyota Birfield with BFG 35's on a Zuk.
I dunno if a D30 is stronger or not?:bounce:

You can get shafts to use 297x's (D44 ujoints) in your D30, so the only places you would be weaker than a D44 is the Ring & Pinion, and the inner shaft (27spline vs. the D44's 30 spline).
Two things,
THe Rock Ready Jeep TJ's from Skyjacker sport D30's with 38" swampers, gearing, and a 4.0L
Randy Ellis' ARCA Sami buggy things sports a D30 upfront with a D44 out back and 35's with a "stock" motor.
I don't see any problem with the D30 and in fact they can be upgraded to run Superior Axle shafts with 297X u joints (Same as a D44). So you could have the best of both worlds. Cheap, lighter (than a D44) and strong.

Hey Dana expert(s) what is the ring gear diameter in a D30, and where do the gear ratio's start? 3.50:1 or so for common junkyard units? Are there any stock R&P ratio's numerically lower than 3.5? (Like 3.0:1)
I got a reason I'm asking;)
I think I just found 5.38's for the D30......
