Recently, my 81 suburban has been idleing rough. When i push on the gas, it will accelerate fine, and everything else, but when i am sitting at a red light, in drive or even park, it will idle really rough, like it is missing, but it isnt. The SCM in the distributor is new, the cap and rotors is new, it was recently timed, and the coil is new, and the PU coil is new. I am going to replace the wires, but i dont know if that is totally the problem, one of the wires has a lot of oil on, could this be the cause??? Also, when i would jump on the gas, occasionly, once every week or less, it felt like the engine would shut off, and stop firing, then come back on and accelerate like the carb secondaries opened. PLEASE help me if you can. Thanks a lot

How now browncow, Check your wires and plugs. Could be your fuel filter or a vacuum leak.:skull:

I know when wires have oil on them over time they will swell and sometime short out on valve cover or exhaust manifold..

Thanks a lot for your help. I will try the plugs and wires ASAP, what vacuums are you talking about, the ones on the carb? fuel filter is good, it was done about 6-8000 miles ago.

It sounds like your EGR valve is stuck open.

Mine did this too. Try unplugging it and plug the line for a second.

Alrighty, will check that tomorrow, as for today, i changed the wires and found that there was one spark plug loose. Read up in the Haynes and the EGR valve problems are some that i have described. I am also going to check the other spark plugs tomorrow. Thanks for the help and suggestions. Will let you know how that works.
