Check out the Garmin Etrex. I have the legend and love it!

I'm with Erich. Love my Etrex Summit. Even used it for logging my jogging miles.

*EDIT* forgot the model.

I also have a Garmin Etrex that's great. It's a few years old, been through a lot of mud and water, no problems. It'd be nice to have some more features like a basemap, but it's a good place to start with GPS.

Garmin is the only consumer brand worth looking at. Everything else just isn't as good or as well supported.

Garmin GPSV list $499.
Print this and be sure to click you price (http://www.mall24-7.com/cgi-bin/store.cgi?action=link&sku=010-00226-03)
And this (http://www.dealtime.com/xPF-Garmin_GPS_V)
Go to Circuit City and use their price match. I walked out the door for $413. After the $75 rebate I will have about $335 for it.
It's AWSOME!
Comes with all the maps and full unlock on the map CD, Dash mount, Cig cord. I really like it.

I'm currently using an Etrex Summit for hunting as I like to know how high up I am. I would recomend ones of these babbies to any first time GPS owner.

Now if you want to get a little nicer the map in something like the Garmin GPS 4 is very nice to have. I'm using a GPS 3+ still but I'm thinking of upgrading.

I have the etrex vista... it's pretty nice... especially if you want one with built in maps or the ability to upload/download maps, topos etc.

http://www.gpscity.com/

they've got if for $284 and there's a $50 rebate. they also sell the ram mounts which give you numerous mounting options for vehicle, bike, etc.
