: any thing better than the 297?
Jeepmangled87 11-20-2001, 07:33 PM Ill be running 37 boggers on my front waggy 44 and I dont have the cash for alloy shafts at the moment. What is the new U-joint that spicer makes that is better than then the 297 joint ?? also is spicer the best u-joint or is there better ones out there? Also if any one runs a simmilar setup on a front dana 44 let me know how it holds up Ive just got a 6cyl so I think I can make it live until I can someday get a 60. thanks.:usa: :smokin:
Josh 89XJ 11-20-2001, 08:56 PM That would be the new Spicer 5-760x.
TornadoTJ 11-20-2001, 08:57 PM I received a reply from the folks at Dana/Spicer.
"...there is no evidence to support a claim of increased strength..."
Josh 89XJ 11-20-2001, 09:27 PM Which makes me wonder. Guys that usually bust 297s are saying that these seem to last longer, but Spicer says that the only difference is in the design of the seal. Dunno. I guess just wheel them till you break them like everything else :flipoff2:

Maybe in the Make Believe land of "Legaleze Mumbo Jumbo" that statement might be true.
But in the real world, of "Wow!! Kelly went through an entire Rock Crawling Competition running 39.50x18 Boggers" and never broke a joint, that claim seems a little understated.
They are actually panning out to be substantialy stronger than than the 297. I have a set in my spare shaft assemblies, just in case the CTM joints were to let go,..I dont think Ill be needing them soon though.
TornadoTJ 11-20-2001, 11:13 PM This Jeep runs hard trails, has an LT1 that's built bigtime, around 500 HP, and still has the stock YJ front D30.

Can you tell me more about this new joint. Is this a direct replacement for the 297? Can this be used in a D30 with alloy shafts?
Oxjockey 11-21-2001, 06:22 AM Any more info on these? Where available, how much, blah blah blah?
TIA,
Bryan

yes it is a direct replacement for the 297, yes it can be used with an alloy shaft, and dana 30 if you have a 297 in there now.
do a search, there is more info posted a couple of weeks ago, and even a pick of it, try this form and the general 4x4 one, search with 5-760x
H8monday 11-21-2001, 08:37 AM If you want to get the most out of them, you will need to run alloy shafts and full circle clips.
The next big step up from the 5-760X, are the CTM (300M) Joints, with alloy shafts, and the accompanying clips. These joints are nearly indestructable, and will break an alloy shaft, without damaging the joint. Thats probably why Jack Graef, the owner of CTM, will be offering a lifetime warranty with the joints.
The 5-760x joints should be available at most drivetrain shops, or they can order them for you. They are typicaly running about $22 each.
The CTMs can be had by calling Jack Graef at CTM 949-487-0770.
They should be available to the public around the 1st of the year.
I believe they will be priced at about $150 each, with a warranty.
Jaffer 11-21-2001, 09:14 PM I just picked up a new pair of the Spicer 5-760x UJs this morning from my local Fleet Pride drive line shop.
When I went down there last Friday they'd never heard of them and they weren't in their computer system.
The counter guy call Dana and ordered some up.
I also bought a 5-260x for a CJ D30.
When I got the bill I got a shock!
The pair of 760s were $ 16.03 each plus $ 7.56 freight (cuz I'd special ordered them) and the single 260 was $27.45 in stock!!
Josh 89XJ 11-22-2001, 01:37 PM I had the same thing happen at Napa yesterday. They suddenly wanted $36 for a 260! Weren't those like $18-$22 just a few weeks ago, or have I just been :smokin: and am thinking of one of the many other joints I replaced in the past few weeks?
Blackjack 11-22-2001, 04:39 PM Dana will not make any claims that the 760s are stronger do to liablilty concerns. I have talked to a source that has done some lab testing on them. Their tests showed that the weakest 760 was 20% stronger than the strongest 297 tested. They did note that the 760s breaking point varied quite a bit (they said the 297s breaking point was more consistant at around 54000 in/lbs). We now have them at work and they do look a lot better than the 297s. They have larger needles, and the old style reinforced seal (definately a good thing if you play where it is wet. And for what little difference in price I cannot see why you would not want to run them.
