: Vortec Wiring Question...

Ok, i've almost got my Vortec 305(5.0) swap done. The only question i have now is this...

The jeep has two wires that go out from the harness that take care of the starting and running of the engine. One is a wire that just goes to the starter solenoid. I have wired that up with the factory chevrolet starter relay and it appears to function properly.

The other wire supplys voltage somewhere when the key is on and cranking. The question is...where do i connect this wire to tell the computer for the 305 that its time to start up?

If anyone has done this swap or a similar one your ideas are greatly appreciated. This is really the only hurdle i have left is merging the jeep wiring with the chevy wiring.

Thank you

One wire needs to go to the fuel pump relay. You should hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds when you turn the key to the on position.

sounds like the ignition coil

What I did on mine was go out and buy a cheapie Ford style starter solenoid which is fender mounted and ran everything to it. It made the job a lot easier and everything terminates cleanly.

There should be a couple items which go to the switched hot lead on the solenoid, such as fuel pump, computer hot lead, and a main switched hot lead from your interior harness. I think I have more than that on mine since there were a bunch of ring terminals that had fusable links attatched

Doesn't the starter have its own solenoid built in? Because right now what i have is starter wire going from my jeep harness to the chevy fuse block. On the chevy fuse block there is a starter relay. I use the jeep starter signal to switch the relay, then that relay puts power to the starter solenoid on the motor. Is this correct?

So the fuel pump should be always running with the key in the on position? Or does the computer decide when its on or off?

I was thinking about keeping my stater set up the way it is. Then taking the ignition(On-run) wire from the jeep harness and putting it to the ignition switch input to the chevy computer. Ideas?

I don't mean to sound so dumb here, hell i'm an electrical engineer, but the only engine experience i've ever had has been carbed...really simple shit there.
