: possible to use a slightly offset axle?
dunno if this would be considered a newbie question or not...but is it possible to use 79 wagoneer 44 axle? Its not a widetrac. It is 59 or 60", so an inch or two shorter than what i am now. It will be in a 95 YJ. He said it is offset a little, but not as offset as a dana 44 in his cj...does slightly offset make a difference?
another friend has a widetrac 44 out of a 79 cherokee, but they are offset to pasenger side. To make it work, i would just need to get a different xfer case? This correct???
Thanks a lot

TexasBlake 05-18-2003, 10:59 PM If it doesn't see too much high speed it shouldn't be a problem. Samurais run center axles with their offset t-case all the time, so I'm sure you could do the opposite. But like I said, probably at low speeds only. I'd get a good shaft from onetoncv as well.

speed has no efect. I run a D70 offset at least 4" or more, no vibes to 70, it is a cv, but a regular would do better anyway if the angle isn't to steep;)
Rockcrusher 05-19-2003, 07:05 AM Shouldn't be a problem as long as long as your driveshaft angle isn't radical and everything is relatively well balanced. My Willys wagon had a D20 T/C swapped into it in another lifetime and it still has the antique offset 44 . . . junk functions as designed.
jeepinblackdog 05-19-2003, 07:19 AM I have the exact setup with a 3 link in a 93 wrangler. I have a 360 with tf727 and have had zero problems with it. go to

for pics. more in the trail rides area. I did make a rear drive shaft from a the front driveshaft of the same 79 cherokee chief I took the axles from.
thanks everyone for the replies. I think I am going to go ahead and do it since I can get the axle for cheap.
jeepinblackdog - nice lookin rig. Have any more specs on it? Is it the 59" WMS D44? I didnt want to go narrower, but i guess 1" isnt bad at all.
Currently I am 2" BDS, 1"shackle, 3"body :( . I am thinking going SOA with the 2" BDS, stock lenght shackles, then going to a 1" body lift. Sitting on 35 swampers.
In order to make this work, I would need:
SYE - arent these close to $400?
driveshaft (from onetoncv) :D -$?
new perches? - $20
new wheels - free
D44 carrier (anyone have one??????????) - if used ~100?
4.88's rear- $180
4.88's front - $180
maybe a locker... if i am lucky
1" body lift - $80
damn, this gets expensive fast...would i need anything else in order to make this swap?
jeepinblackdog 05-19-2003, 10:05 AM I think the rear is 60" inches, It's been 2 years since I put it in. It does rub the frame when fully stuffed on the back. I am looking at a set of 2" off set wheels instead of the normal 4 inch. On the Cherokee chiefs that the axles came out of the front is 2"inches wider then the front axle. The spec's are in that same thread I sent you. I think the only thing that I have done to it since I posted it was put a TBI setup from a 88 gm pickup that had a 350. Now I can run it on it side or straight up and it won't stop running:D I'm running 4.88 gears as well. What are you running in the front. Hope it's not the stock 30.........
yea, so what if its a d30 :/. one axle at a time :D I wasnt sure if i wanted to go with a narrower axle, but I am going to Delaware with the jeep soon and i want to have atleast a rear axle.
Is it possible to redrill these axles to a 5bolt pattern? I can get some other rims, but it would be easier to just redrill...
thanks again

jeepinblackdog 05-20-2003, 05:24 AM Only reason for the comment about the dana 30 is the 4.88 gears. That's going to to be are realllllly smalll pinion. You will probably strip the gear before you break an axle. What ever you do don't lock the front. Never redrilled an axle but I's sure it can be done.
my 2 cents.;)
I figured i would be ok with 4.88's because i only have the 4banger. If i had a v8 or something i would be scared. Down here 4.88's will be fine in the d30 in the mud with my setup; but I am not sure on the rocks.
I am still not sure about the gears though. I still want to be able to have highway speeds (~70). I havent really thought about what gears, but i was considering 4.88's. Have any suggestions on the gears that can get me highway speeds? 4 banger, auto, 35" swampers.
jeepinblackdog 05-20-2003, 09:57 AM 4.56 if you want to run at 70mph on the highway.
