: EB questions - please read
CPMaverick 11-20-2001, 09:02 PM I know you guys have a lot of experience with Early Broncos. 1966-1977. And you are spread throughout the country. So if you don't mind, I'd like to ask a few questions to settle a disagreement.
Did EBs ever come with 31 spline axles?
Did EBs ever come with small (Ford car) bolt pattern?
Did EBs ever come in 2WD only?
Thanks.
Even if many people have already answered, please post, because I want as many answers from different people from around the country as possible. And if you have time post HOW you know.

FordPowr 11-20-2001, 10:21 PM Nope, despite what the mags say 28 spline only
Nope (I assume your mean wheel bolt pattern) EB's are 5 on 5.5"
Nope, never a 2 wd bronco EB...or fullsize
I know this cause I know everything :grinpimp:

What he said. I know this cuz he said it.
seriously though, I'm quite sure EB's never came stock with 31 spline axles. If by some fluke they did, they were very very very very rare. The EB I bought for parts had a big bearing 9" with nodular 3rd. I think that's all the beef they ever had.
The front hubs are really too big for a wheel with a smaller bolt pattern. 5 on 5.5 is what you get.
2wd EB:confused:  If someone managed to smuggle one out of the factory, I'm sure he paid dearly with his life. It's wrong to even think of such a thing.
I have one question for you........what's the purpose of these questions?
Yeah, what Fordpowr said :) I know 'cause I own a EB '68 . The only 'Bronco' to come with 5 on 4.5 (small passenger car) is the BroncoII based on the small Ranger mini-pickup.
And the BroncoII did come 4x2.

CPMaverick 11-21-2001, 01:49 PM The purpose of the questions is to settle an arguement on another board.
Keep 'em coming. Has anyone ever seen a Bronco (not Bronco II)with any of the above options?<font size="-5" color="black">
smurfsdad 11-21-2001, 01:52 PM only a purpose built 2wd racer, none production
deadduck 11-25-2001, 07:58 PM no 31 spline shafts
no car bolt pattern
no 2wd
the only one of these that would be worth having is the first

no to all 3 they only came with 28 splines, 4wd and 5x5.5 I know this because Nobody said so.
As far as options I have seen many people put aftermarket 31 splined axles into broncos and I have seen a few 2wd Broncos ( mostly for racing and sand ) but I have not ever seen a smaller bolt pattern in a Bronco. Maybe the people on the other board have a car rear end in a bronco that has 31 splined and a small bolt pattern I have seen those rear ends just not in a Bronco.
injectedEB 11-26-2001, 08:34 AM I've never seen or heard of any 66-77 Bronco with the above options factory or even dealer installed - only in the magazines.
The only other place I could think that maybe - and thats a big maybe - a 31 spline was installed would be on a Strope Bronco.

but it's not OEM...someone swapped them in
fisherman 11-26-2001, 02:42 PM oem in 76-77 go to any parts store and ask about 3300 rearend
injectedEB 11-26-2001, 03:01 PM what's the vin#? this is the first "comfirmed" sighting of this rare beast that I know of.
BTW - all my local parts houses only know of 28splines in 66-77 bronco's and that includes an EB specialty shop thats been in business for over 10 years. One parts shop I had look up the 3300 rear and they said that the only listing they had like that was for a 78-79 bronco or a f-100 (not sure of year on that though) - disclaimer, above parts house isn't the greatest on knowledge, just closest to day job...
just for reference sake, is the 3300 rear the large bearing 11" brake rear on the 76-77 Broncos?
If so that's what I got and it came to me with 28 splines, but then again I think I'm the 3rd owner of it, now has 31splines with tapered roller bearings in it.
deadduck 11-26-2001, 08:41 PM i have an untouched 77 out side with the 3300 rearend and am going to go pull the axle out and count the splines right now will let you know how i turn out
injectedEB 11-26-2001, 10:04 PM I look forward to your post - if it does, that will make the 76-77 Bronco all that more appealing - and give some credibility back to the magazines.....
inphobic 11-27-2001, 05:50 AM I have a 3300lb 76' axle that has 28 spline...
No
I had heard a rumor that some mail delivery trucks came off the line with 2wd but I don't know of anyone that has ever seen one of these. So I would dismiss it until hard evidence came along. What "other" Board are you using anyways?
Here's to the mag anyways....
:flipoff2:
I have a 77 BB 3300 axle and it has 28 spline axles. This question has come up on several other list and I think it always wound up that the person with 31 spline axles was like the 3rd or 4th owner.
deadduck 11-28-2001, 07:43 PM ok fella's no it doesn't take me that long to pull an axle shaft, but you have to remember i live in south dakota and it's only about 20 degrees here and the shop is full. sorry to disappoint anyone but the axle only had 28 splines. if you don't believe me i guess you can come over and look, i'll let you borrow my tools, and i would love the company, you know i'm the only person that lives in this god forsaken place.

CPMaverick 01-03-2002, 04:58 PM So no one has ever seen a EB rearend with 31 spline & small bolt pattern right? If anyone has speak up!
CPMaverick 01-03-2002, 05:09 PM Here is the post that is the reason I started this thread. Note, you can't reply to it because it is archived, but you can read the responses.

injectedEB 01-03-2002, 05:28 PM those posts are interesting and rickyracer may be a good scrounger at the junkyard, but he is ill informed on EBs. From the many lists and forums I frequent, it seems that there were a very select few '77 EBs that got 31 splines as Ford was gearing up for the '78 Bronco. Even that seems to be just a theory as no one that has found the 31 splines in their axle is the original owner of the particular EB.
I could point out a few other misconceptions that rickyracer has, but that's not the discussion here.

I know cause these questions keep coming up at least 5 times a year on all of the other general 4x4 boards, Ford pickup boards, the two EB specific ones I'm on and the 4 or 5 EB specific email lists around.
