Any ome got any info on swaping a T-5 with a Ax-15 on a 84 YJ with a 258 . I have a friend who is looking to do the swap . What years are the Ax-15 used . I assume a Bell housing and every thing between the motor and the trans will have to go . Will the Ax-15 mate to the Xfer case with out modification ??? I figure the
Xfer case is a NP231 .

Hay thanks for the help guys

Uh, Dude:

There was no such thing as an 84 YJ. '84 woulda been a CJ. YJs came out in '87 and never had the T5 in 'em stock.

Your best bet is to get an AX-15 from late '89 or '90. These are the ones with the bellhousing that'll bolt up to a 258. If it's really an 84 CJ it won't have the 231. It'll have the D300 I think. Not sure about the input gear splines on one of these, but I know it's been done (AX-15 to D300).

Assuming you want to put an AX-15 into an '84 CJ you need the following.

New custom pilot bushing,
BH from the AX-15
Clutch disk , throughout bearing and p-plate from the AX-15
The T-5 flywheel should work
Hydraulic slave and mc form the AX-15
The mounting plate under the tranny
modify your tranny skid to accept the AX-15
modify the mc to work with the CJ clutch peddle

All AX-15's are the same in YJ's and TJ's the difference is the BH. Between '89-93 there is an internal slave/throw-out bearing unit. On the '94-00 the slave is external and uses an idependent through-out bearing and fork. The external ones are recomended because it is much easier and cheaper to change the slave if it blows a seal. The bolt patten will bolt to a d300 in the CJ, but check the input spline count. The AX-15 will be 23 spline. I am sure I missed a few things here, but it is a good strart. I am sure one call to Novac or Advanced Adaptors will answer any lingering questions. Oh yeh, I think you will need new driveshafts because the trannies are different lengths.
