: July 4th West Virginia - Annual offroad Jambo
SilverZuk 05-19-2003, 02:32 PM It's time to sign up for our Annual Jamboree.
The event will consist two days of guided trail rides, from stock to extreme, and probably a Thursday night run, and sunday run if there is enough people interested.
A pig roast with all the fixings, raffles, and fireworks display will be on Sat. July 5th. The facilities are top quality, and close to town.
We have some good trails for the novice/slightly modified to the trailer queen that doesn't want to bring it back without damage.
Click on the link to register, if you have any questions pm me.
http://www.mountaineeroffroad.com/
Some of our harder trails have by passes to avoid the nasty obstacles.
Level 1 - Stock rigs, novice driver, good tires required
(don't bring a RAV4, CRV, or Subaru)
Level 2 - Stock rigs with good tires and good drivers, mildly modified rigs, traction aids a plus, some recovery equipment a plus.
Level 3 - Modified vehicles, 33's and up (31's on suzuki)
One locker required. Two lockers preferred, winch preferred.
Level 4 - Heavily modified vehicles, 2 lockers and winch required. Spare parts preferred, damage likely
Level 5 - Extremely modified vehicles only, bring your own tools and parts. You probably won't leave without breaking, or tearing something up.
These trail ratings are based on the expected conditions in July (fairly dry), if we get much rain some trails will be impassible without a winch. It is possible to let some non-winch vehicles in these groups if we can get two winch equipped vehicles to volunteer to winch them before we leave camp.
If your live in the area, and are interested in joining Mountaineer Offroad, please contact me.
The jamboree is located between Fayetteville and Sumersville. Most of our trails are within 15-20 miles of the camp. There is parking for trailered rigs at the trail head.
SilverZuk 05-19-2003, 02:33 PM HERE ARE THE MOST RECENT TRAIL REPORTS
The Creek – Level 4, with some Level 5 sections
Several miles of rocky creek bottom, a service road closely follows the trail to allow people to go around the rougher sections. This trail is level 3 capable if drivers are willing to bypass rough sections.
Ratings (1-5):
Body Damage – 4
Roll over risk – 2
Parts Breakage – 4
Sacrifice – Level 4 to 5
It consists of an old log road up a steep hill. Simple enough? Not really, a very large rut runs down the middle of the road. Some drivers with enough power, tires, and luck make it up the hill without ending up in the rut. The other 99% end up in the rut, on their side, and with sheet metal crunching, tires spinning and winching, to go the rest of the way up. No one has ever drove through the rut or made it out of the rut without winching. Body damage highly likely and winch required.
Ratings (1-5):
Body Damage – 4
Roll over risk – 4
Parts Breakage – 3.5
Clutch Creek (NEW for 2003) Level 5
A very narrow, rocky wash that leads into the head of a steep side hollow. Several large boulders, loose rocks, large ledges, and the steep slope at the end require a winch. Full size rigs may not be able to make it all (one Tellico - Lower 2 veteran said he won’t fit). There is only one way out, and that is with a winch. Body damage highly likely and winch required. If you have enough rig left at the end, you can attempt “The Diablo” exit, no one has been brave enough to run it to date. (We’ll probably run it later this month).
Ratings (1-5):
Body Damage – 5
Roll over risk – 4
Parts Breakage - 5
Guardian Waterfall (NEW for 2003) Level 3 – winch required
The waterfall rejects short wheel based rigs, longer one’s can make it look easy. The trail continues up past the waterfall, through several rocky sections, and three slimy banks that require many to pull out the winch cable. The trail is short but will take all day if wet.
Ratings (1-5):
Body Damage – 2
Roll over risk – 2.5
Parts Breakage - 1
The River Trail – Level 2 (3 if run backwards)
It’s a nice scenic trail that has several loose rocky hill climbs, and two washouts that are moderately off-camber.
Ratings (1-5):
Body Damage – 2
Roll over risk – 2.5
Parts Breakage - 1
Spider Ridge – Level 2 (3 if run backwards)
Gas well service roads take you up to the ridge overlooking the Gauley River and logging roads wind you through Spider Ridge. Several rutted hills, shallow mud holes, and steep descents will test the skill levels of drivers and their rigs.
Ratings (1-5):
Body Damage – 2
Roll over risk – 2
Parts Breakage - 1
The Rock Garden – Level varies (access is level 1)
This is one of our favorite playgrounds. It is located on an abandoned mountain top removal mine. A channel lined with large boulders provides different levels of difficulty. It’s a great confidence builder, easy to access, easy vehicle recovery, great for photos, and spectators. Easy access in and out to avoid the rough sections.
Ratings (1-5):
Body Damage – min. 3 (varies)
Roll over risk – min. 2 (varies)
Parts Breakage – min. 3 (varies)
Pine Knoll – Level 2 (3 to 4 if wet)
This one is a favorite for visitors. The trails consist of a mud hole ridge ending at the “Refrigerator Hole”. Plenty of room for rigs to pull down and watch the attempts into the Refrigerator Hole. Trails then wind through the mountains to an abandoned strip mine. Rut hill always seem to claim at least one “flop victim” per jamboree. The abandoned mine offers a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside, has different hill climbs, and large open areas to play. This trail is easily done with stock rigs with good tires. However, a little rain can make it very difficult. It’s a good all day ride that can handle larger groups.
Ratings (1-5):
Body Damage – 1.5
Roll over risk – 2 (higher if wet)
Parts Breakage - 1
Hummer Hill – Level 3
This is a short trail run that runs from the Creek up to Rock Garden. Loose rocks, and ruts make it very difficult to traverse without at least one locking differential. Roll overs are not common, but have happened before. This is not for the faint of heart, or novice. Once the hill is traversed, a series of service roads take you back around to the rock garden for some play time.
Ratings (1-5):
Body Damage – 2
Roll over risk – 3
Parts Breakage - 2
Twenty Mile – Level 1
This trail winds through numerous creek crossing and has several hill climbs. It’s a great run for; stock vehicles, novice drivers, or to cool off while splashing through creeks and enjoying the view of the mountainous terrain.
Ratings (1-5):
Body Damage – 1
Roll over risk – 1
Parts Breakage - 1
Alter Ridge – Level 1 to 2
The trail runs from the creek trail up the mountain to the Rock Garden. Several hillclimbs and off camber sections will provide experience, and help build confidence for the drivers that are not looking for a death defying experience.
Ratings (1-5):
Body Damage – 1
Roll over risk – 2
Parts Breakage - 1
Left Fork – Level 2
Small to medium sized rocks and one off-camber ledge provide fun for drivers just getting used to rock crawling, or running a stock vehicle with a capable driver. Usually this trail is run in conjunction with Old School or Alter Ridge depending on the skill level in the group.
Ratings (1-5):
Body Damage – 2
Roll over risk – 1
Parts Breakage - 2
Cracker Hill – (NEW for 2003) Level 5
A deep ravine on a steep incline guarantees body damage and use of a winch.
This trail is still being developed, and more details will be ready before the Jamboree.
Ratings (1-5):
Body Damage – 5
Roll over risk – 5
Parts Breakage - 5
Old School – Level 3 but winch required (4 if wet)
Long steep, loose, rutted hill climbs, a few off-camber sections take you from the bottom to the top in a short steep series of old log roads. Winching is almost always required on the last section. (This is where the blue flat-fender rolled backwards last year).
Ratings (1-5):
Body Damage – 2
Roll over risk – 3
Parts Breakage - 2

No one has made it yet without winching
SilverZuk 05-20-2003, 06:16 AM Here's JY4Rox on the entrance to the Gaurdian Waterfall trail.
The entrance is a near verticle rock ledge.
Some longer wheel bases make it look easy. YJ/TJ wheel bases it is tough, and Suzuki (80") it's impossible without assistance.

bigbene 05-20-2003, 10:40 AM I can't wait to come up and get on a few more of the trails.
Just ordered a winch, so I'll be a little more prepared this time. No more sliding off the side of a mountain for me. :flipoff2:

It's a trail rig out on a trail.
I know that's a new concept for you, but someday you'll figure out your supposed to wheel them instead of work on them.:flipoff2:
roktoy98 05-20-2003, 11:38 AM about time you bought a winch.
maybe my battery will not get fried this time.
go talk to gay mike at 4 wheel parts and buy a snatch block before we go back to swiss.:D
bigbene 05-20-2003, 11:42 AM Why do I need a snatch block? You've always got one.
I was looking at the specs, and the M8000 pulls 435 amps at 8000 lbs. load!
I knew they pulled a lot of juice, but damn!

I am going to be cutting it close to get this thing ready for the jambo

YJ4RoX 05-20-2003, 12:03 PM Yeah Jacob that new Atlas will be sweet for crawling over the tools on tha shop floor. Work faster---you may want to start riding the quad at Swiss to find some trails those rockwells will fit on. :flipoff2:
Ben--buy a good battery, I am on my 3rd Autozone 1000 amp battery. These warns draw some serious amperage under a heavy load.

I've got a red top optima, and I've been thinking about a dual battery setup.
I dunno, we'll see how things go.

Dont hook up the winch to the side posts on the optima, they are a low duty cycle. It will smoke it fast.
I want to get dual yellow tops in mine, but i keep spending that money elsewhere.

I know what you mean there. :)
So back on topic, I've been out to Swiss about 5 times and have never even heard of some of these trails. Where did all of 'em come from?
From the way you rate the trails I have run, some of the others must be down right hard-core.
This is definately gonna be a good trip.
bspencer 05-20-2003, 10:05 PM sweet pics!...dont you hate it when you get home from a ride and you have pics galore of everyone else and nobody at all has a pic of your rig?....lol.......
On the registration link the upper link works just having a lil problem with the lower link....trying to get it fixed sorry for the inconvenience.....
Got my new 150' 5/16 winch cable for my warn 8000 now i just have to order the damn drive gear for it and set it back on the jeep....see you guys on the trails!!!
Bobby
zukiman 05-20-2003, 11:12 PM Hell yeah!
If any of you are within reasonable driving distance (let's say, within 52 hours, plus gas & piss stops like me....and screw the sleep!) then you NEED to go to the WV Jamboree. WV trails are totally underrated, and even the most badass mofo's can and will break when they start getting it awn. Heck, my first break in a couple years happened when SilverZuk led me to their rock garden....snapped an axle that had survived at least 12 Rubicon trips.
If you don't attend the WV Jamboree, you're :rainbow: :flipoff2:

Ben, Some of the trails are short so we will run two or three together to make an all day ride, of course that depends on how wet it is and how many rigs we have.
Pine KNoll and 20 Mile are not in Swiss.
Sacrifice, Alter Ridge, Clutch Creek and Diablo(not offically open) are on the left hand ridge past the 4th creek crossing.
Spider ridge, and the River trail are straight out and then off to your right.
Cracker Hill, Guardian(waterfall) are right near bowl creek and the main creek.
Old School and Hummer Hill and the Play ground(not open and secret area;) )are on the middle ridge that takes you back up to the rock garden. PLus there are a couple of other rock gardens that are shorter but very nasty.
I can think of 2-3 other places that are trails but not trail ride worthy, just short little sections that are fun to go explore.
The area has great potential. We havent really started cutting and exploring most of the areas. There are places out toward the river trail that would make the most experienced drivers drool. We have mainly concentrated on making trails that wont take long to open and will connect to a good loop to keep the trail traffic flowing smoothly. We dont want any traffic jams. Matt Lorne and myself have discussed trail routing extensively so traffic will be avoided at all cost.
bigbene 05-21-2003, 10:20 AM The waterfall last weekend was just plain nasty. I can't wait to see some of the harder trails that are gonna be open.
I have to agree with Zukiman, If you live within 8 hours of Swiss, and don't come, you're just :rainbow:
bspencer 05-21-2003, 12:58 PM Id say WV wheeling is one of offroadings best kept secrets
roktoy98 05-22-2003, 05:55 AM bene you missed a few of the trails when Don and I went down last summer.
Clutch creek is probably the nastiest section i have seen there. It's pretty bad that a hardcore wheeler went and looked at it and said NO F-ING WAY would he take his K-5 ON 38'S down it...
It has axle breakage written all over it i think:emb4:
4x4extreme 05-31-2003, 12:21 PM Time is running out too signed up
bspencer 06-02-2003, 10:09 PM heres a couple pics of one of our easy trails Spider Ridge (http://community.webshots.com/user/bspencer24)
SilverZuk 06-03-2003, 01:16 PM Here's some pics from one of our easier trails that is more of scenic drive. Four wheel drive is required, but it's mostly old mine roads.
This is a typical reclaimed surface mine site in the area.
SilverZuk 06-03-2003, 01:17 PM another
SilverZuk 06-03-2003, 01:18 PM and another
Thanks for the pics Don. (some day I will quit shooting film and get into the digital world).
SilverZuk 06-03-2003, 01:20 PM Old School trail will have a height limit on it this year.
There is an extremely large tree across the trail about half way up.
We will have details of what fits and what doesn't at the Jamboree.
bspencer 06-03-2003, 03:35 PM old school needs to be cleared the rest of the way also doesnt it?....needs to be done soon too! even if its done on ATV's
Bobby
roktoy98 06-04-2003, 08:06 AM let me knwo if i need to come down and help clear some trees out.
krawlr 06-04-2003, 08:04 PM I'm gonna need maps.....BIG TIME!
roktoy98 06-05-2003, 05:43 AM yes maps would be a good thing.:flipoff2:

I'm not sure enough to say but......AFAIK on the full map, we enter at the bottom, the left loop has Sacrifice and I think it goes up to the rock garden, and the right loop is the river trail. The other 2 maps are the full cut in half and rotated 90deg right.
Oh yea and the long straight trac lines is the GPS loosing the signal.
roktoy98 06-16-2003, 05:41 AM Bene,
I didn;t figure you could figure that out!
You try telling me we are going the wrong way every time we drive down there!:flipoff2:
Rob Kosinski 06-17-2003, 07:02 PM Im thinking about coming down with some of my NJ crew.. Are you guys running the notch. I heard its pretty killer and a real good time.
Thanks
RK
bspencer 06-17-2003, 11:41 PM I added the couple obvious locations to the map.unless i totally screwed it up Swiss (http://community.webshots.com/album/77431715Fddgqm)
Bobby
roktoy98 06-18-2003, 05:27 AM you have me lost here?
what are you calling the notch? do you mean clutch creek or cracker hill?
Rob Kosinski 06-18-2003, 07:30 AM My buddy calls the trail the notch.. I assumed this was the name. It is on private property and has a series of obstacles such as waterfalls and ravines. He said it is one of his favorite trails. His name is Neil and he has a green TJ. HE is probably the only one with NJ tags down there.
Thanks
RK
roktoy98 06-18-2003, 12:42 PM That describes about every trail there..
SilverZuk 06-18-2003, 03:17 PM RockToy98 you and I have never run the notch it's about an hour to 1.5 hours south of the Swiss trails.
Rob Kosinski
We're not sure if we're going to run it this year since no one has been down for a prerun. The club members from that area are no longer active in the club.
I'll see if I can get someone to check it out. We focused all of our efforts into swiss this year. The trails were in bad shape after winter, it took us all year to get them straightened up.
We have some cool new trails that I'm sure will challenge you. I think I rode last year with your buddy. We ran the creek trail on friday.
bspencer 06-18-2003, 05:50 PM after the 4"+ of rain that we got in a 2 hour period on Monday I ent down on the 4wheeler for a few today to Swiss and the Service roads are now harder than some of the trails.....the waterfall trail now has what appears to be a nice little hole at the bottom of it which should make it a little harder.........a few trees are down across the service roads.......parts of what used to be the road is now the creek...the intersection at the LEft fork and where you go straight to Cracker Hill,Hummer Hill etc has a few good 3ft rock ruts in it.........seen a few new good obstacles that got uncovered from hte flood as well........some might be in for a surprise unless the gas company gets the roads doen before the jambo but dont count on it
Bobby
roktoy98 06-19-2003, 05:41 AM 4" of rain in 2 hours is crazy.
i bet that did do some earth moving.

We are still unsure if we will run the Notch. The guy that usually guides that trail moved to NC. "Ritepath" here on pirate has access, its his uncles??, farm, but he is currently in NY. Its a good trail, the notch itself is pretty crazy.
The two new trails at swiss are as hard as the trail at the notch, clutch creek is definately more difficult and the waterfall trail is close.
Like stated above, we have had some serious errosion so the trails will be nasty and wet. Plenty of chances to break your rig.
bspencer 06-20-2003, 06:54 PM Rain or Shine be there.........if its a little wet it just makes the trails harder!
flimmy 06-22-2003, 05:37 PM WARNING
DO NOT SPEED ON RT19
for anyone not familiar with the area , they have speed traps there all the time. I just went through there today and saw 3-4

bspencer 06-22-2003, 07:19 PM just dont speed much coming through SUmersville(50mph limit) other than that you can cruise around 70 with no problems

The rest of the road is 65 and I did see a state trooper with someone pulled over in a 65 mph zone today , just north of Summersville. I think if you keep it no more than 5 over your ok .

You might get on the club message board and see if you can hook up with someone up your way.
If your rig is running, bring it down. We have trails for all skill levels and rigs.

Can I wheel my unregistered, uninsured Sammy? I was thinking about towing it up there behind my Toy with some new tires on it and just wheeling it til I break it. I don't know if this is a dumb (or even acceptable) idea or not.
The Zuk is basically stock:( since I haven't had any time to work on it. At least if I wheel that I don't have to worry about it getting me home come Sunday.
Am I gonna be totally screwed towing it behind my 22RE Toy up 77 to Songer's? How bad exactly is the terrain?
Hef
bspencer 07-01-2003, 10:09 PM theres somesteep hills to climb on I 77 starting at teh NC VA border on Fancy gap mountain....this hill is about 7 miles long.......then its continuous up and down.....then in WV Flattop is pretty steep(not as long as fancygap but a good bit steeper).......you might make it ok though.jsut look out for the coppers!....lol.got any trails i nmind you would like to run?
roktoy98 07-02-2003, 05:45 AM rolling out for camp at 5pm today...sweet:flipoff2:

Towing a zuki with yota would suck on thr turnpike. Not to mention fancy gap. I would be more worried about blowing up the truck towing, much more than breaking something bad enough to not make it home. Heck i drove my jeep to Tellico last fall, broke stuff, fixed it and still got home. Just bring the yota man.
Marc, you guys have a good trip, see you tomorrow night.

I would be more inclined to just drive your toy up and wheel it.
The Zuk is not going to be any more capable than the toy with both being in stock form. If you break your toy, we can get you fixed and back home. I wouldn't tow the zuk with a 22re through here. It would be extremely hard on the truck and dangerous.
We've got good trails for stock vehicles, just run what you brung.

bspencer 07-08-2003, 06:16 PM well where are the updates?.........I wanna know what Hef and Joe thought of it......Only had about 11 rollovers.......9 by Hef and 2 by SilverZuk......The event went really well and i believe that all had a great time......on the first day i led 13 rigs through portions of the lower creek, spider ridge and back to the lower creek.....had 3 Rubi's in hte group and they did not impress me(could have been the drivers).one was lifted 4.75" with 35's,one with 4" lift and 33's the otehr being stock....they all got stuck or slowed by something on the easy trail i took them on...the one on 33's got its first damage by getting the bumper pushed backwards on a rock at the lower creek.....but they enjoyed every minute of it...... on the second day i just went to Clutch Creek to help out, take pics and help pull winch cable(Alot of it).....was awesome! but i only managed to get a few pics because of helping out Pics here (http://community.webshots.com/user/bspencer24) its not many but as we get more sent back into us we'll post them for all to see!

I had a good time. I was disappointed that I couldn't get anything done to my Zuk before I came up to make it more wheelable. I would have really enjoyed doing the harder trails.
The Rubicon Posse:
I appreciated having Ed in his Rubi right in front of me. I needed to get strapped a couple times and he was right there to pull me out of a jam. However......
It was obvious the Rubicon Posse had nice rigs and no clue how to drive them. I got up a muddy hill in a stock Sammy on bald ass 235/75's with no problem while the 3rd Rubi had to get strapped. The way they were driving I had a feeling we should have switched seats (and let me do the 4-5 trails):D :)
I guess we all start somewhere. It took me a year to figure out how to use low range. :D Lucky for them they have the good fortune to be able to buy $100,000 worth of wheeling gear. The magnetic "paint job protection" sure made me chuckle though.
I wonder what was running throught their heads when I was bashing the hell out of my $300 Sammy.  :D
Overall I think it was a great event and I'm looking forward to coming back up wheeling with you guys again. Mountaineer Offroad put it together well. Pig roast kicked ass.
Jeff even let me put a few rounds through my 12ga!! How cool is that!!
