What were these originally used under? My freind has one under a 89 4x4 f450, but It was an aftermarket conversion. I also know he replaced it with one off of something else do to a broken axle when bought, but I don't know where he got the axle.

All the info I've seen is for the closed knuckle types.

Some of these 88-98 F-Superduty's used a Marmon-Harrington built Dana 70 like this one:

If its *just* like this one, then is uses standard Dodge/GM Dana 60 outers (30-spline stubs) but with 10-lug hubs.

Yep, looks alot like it. Even with just 60 outers, we have yet to break it, and we came out of the mountains at about 17000# with this truck.

I will bet that frt axle is out of a truck that was converted to 4wd by Advanced 4WD Systems in SLC Ut. I worked there for a few years, about 6 years ago. They are 70 rears or Intn'l 70 frts with 60 outers grafted on. Standard 60 35 spline shafts, off the shelf spicer. email me at rckcrlr@networld.com and I can get you contact info if needed.

Actually, not all D70 rears are 35 spline. My 1971 rear 70 is but its a 70U (bigger pads, cylinders, and better clearance..go figure). I think Mr. N has reported Dana 70s that are 23 spline. Either way, those are some big honkin axles.

The 70 from my 85 may have been 30 spline, but I can definetly say that the shafts are bigger. But a 70 shaft next to a 60, and it'll make the 60 look like a toy. :) :)

Yes, this truck was definelty a custom conversion. Ex- SCE truck. Odd that they would use 60 outers. If I was going to go the trouble of build a custom front d70, I would use as strong of stuff as I could.

Rockteeth, thanks for the offer, but I think this thread has told me all I wanted. The one in his truck is in good shape now, and I was just curious. I have this urge to put one under my truck, but I think I would be better off with just a 60.
