I have 9" out of a 79 F150 I'm putting in my Cherokee. I tore the read end apart and there was a shim between the pinion yoke and the top bearing on the Pinion. I ordered a overhaul kit from DTR and it didn't include this shim? Is it something I need to reuse or is it not suposed to be there?
Also, is there suposed to be play in the bearing support between the two bearings? I can move the suport about 1/8 of an inch. When I cant remember from when I took the old one apart if this is normal. Thanks guys!
Any links to 9" gear setup sites? I've doen Dana axles, but not a Ford.

If youve done dana's this ford should be a breeze! the shim isnt a shim at all it just aids the pinion seal in control of the oil rather that relying on the pinion seal 100% and as far as bearing support you havent even started crushing the crush collar. How long did your other gears last?

The old gears were factory. So I just need to slap a big ass breaker bar on the pinion nut and go to town?

you need to take it to about 25-28 inch pounds of rotational force on the pinion , be very easy and check very often if you go to far youll have to start over with a new crush collar

oh yeah... you will need a hell of a breaker bar to start to crush that crush sleeve... make sure you have adequate support to ensure proper torque. and yes... if you have done dana gear setups... ford 9's are super easy

no help to offer here...already have my 9" set up with detroit and 4.56s to go under my97XJ this weekend. Cool to see other XJ owners deviating away from the rear 44 option.
right on

That crush sleeve needs about 400 lbs. to begin crushing it down. As for the shim you speak of, it's an oil slinger to aid in protecting the pinion seal by not letting it dry out.

Piece of cake, just took a 5 ft pipe on the end of a breaker bar. I just learned you have to GRIND the case out to fit 4.56 and numerically higher gears in though. Wasn't too happy to hear this after I had it all set up. Went to spin the ring gear to check the patern and it smacked the case by the front pinion support bearing!
