: 383 Stroker Kit?

When the 350 in my '91 K2500 gets tired, I'm thinking I want to go ahead and stroke it to a 383. This truck serves primarily to tow my 98 Jeep Wrangler to the trailheads so I could use some more low-end power.

I'm also planning during the rebuild to upgrade to Vortec heads and obviously larger injectors but I'd still like to keep it emissions legal. Anything else I should anticipate with this?

Anyone here done one? I've gotten a bit of mixed reviews so far.

What kind of power/torque benefits should I expect?

What kind of gas mileage will I get?

I've built quite a few. Its a good motor, lots of bottom end when matched with right cam and heads. The vortec castings will be fine, you could bolt on a set of crower 1.6:1 roller rockers. Vortec heads stock have a .500inch lift limit so you need to keep that in mind when selecting cams. Make sure you use a good stroker kit and that the machine shop you chose is experienced in 383's. Power you can easily get 300 hp and 400ftlbs with a simple set up. I have only built one fuel injected 383 and it was a TPI set up from arizona speed and marine. I don't know how a TBI will react, I assume with the right throttle body and injectors, and reprogramed ECM it will be fine. Hope this helps Jesse

Vortec heads require a specal manifold that only gm makes, some thing about the valley spaceing is different on the vortec. There is carb manifold and a tpi manifold, some one was saying it's like $200.00 for it.

edelbrock makes an intake for them also. not too expensive. youll want to cahnge the springs and rockers so you can use a good cam. check out the December issue of Petersens they have a decent write up about your motor. hope that helps!:D
