Photos from "The Real Mad Max".
He was interested in converting this thing over to disc brakes.
The comparison axle is a Dana 44.
The D70 shafts are the same dia. as a D60, but are only 27 spline. They also use these funky joints which are about 1" thick steel.
Anyone w/ any info on the beast? Its out of a 2.5 ton 4x4 Dodge offroad driller..

Don't plan on those "U-joints" holding up very well.
Did he get a screaming deal on it? If not dump it and just go Dana 60...

the D70 does not have any u joints.
the one in the pic is a D44
its just there for comparason. this axle was free from a good friend. we are making 35 spline axles out of stainless or chromolly for it. so why would i want to install a D60 with u joints instead? all info welcome!

Yeah I know it does not have u Joints. That is why I had it in quotes. What they do have is very similar to the old Landcruiser Ball joints. And they are very weak with the tires turned. They are thick, but so were the closed knuckle Dana 60's that will break before a dana 44......
I'm sure that someone else knows more about these things than I do..

those joints are known as tracta joints
found in closed knuckle dana 70's
some old dodge power wagons and some landrovers
If you keep em oiled I would bet they would take more abuse than a u-joint
The only problem you run into is the turning radius on a closed knuckle front end, but I know guys who swear by that joint.
if you could get that joint in a dana 70 with stronger shafts and 35 splines I'de go for it
but make a pair cuz none of your pals will have a spare

are you sure that is a dana 70?
what is it out of? the wheel bolt pattern looks like old dodge or rover, might it be a salsbury axle?
