OK, I have a 1975 Jeep Cj6 with a 232 in it. I'm due for SMOG this year.. No problem there.. However will I be required to smog it again in 2005? or will it be exempt? "as I understand it 74's are exempt now? It's got a sick engine and I'm going to find a temp one for smog but I'd like to find a swap and put that in. "after smog"
Current smog law states I have to have same gauges and gas tank if I put a newer FI engine in it. If I were exempt obviously that wouldn't matter.
I seriously appreciate the help on this.. even a place to read the current law translated into english would be helpful.
Thanks!

I think I found it with a friends help thanks!!
How old does a vehicle have to be to qualify for a smog exemption?
Vehicles with a year model 30 years old or older are exempt from the smog certification requirements.
Example: The calendar year is 2003- 29 = 1974 exempt year model
The current calendar year minus 29 equals the year model exempt from smog certification.
As I read that I'm thinkin if I smog it THIS year.. I won't be required to next.. and it will become Exempt by the second year!
WOOT! :D

Mines a 74 and I had to smog it one last time this year.
If your smog year falls on the year it comes out of smog then you will have to smog it on last time.
IF you failed to register it current you will have to smog it one last time as well.

Yep, The way I read it "i'm currently registered" is as long as I smog this year.. next year is my exemption year and the next it would be due again.

As I read that at work, and on the BAR website. 75 and older vehicles will be exempt in 2004, but only from the biannual smog. That means if you keep it forever your good to go. If you are going to sell it in the future it will still need to be smogged.
Also I don't think it matters what tank or gauges you use to do your motor swap. The smog ref I know just wants to see an OEM tank, but he doesn't care what its out of. As for gauges all you would need for a legal fuel injection swap is a "check engine" light indicator.
Anyhow good luck with it!
