I heard that the early 90's 5.0 explorer's have a remote reservoir steering pump. Can anyone confirm which year(s) and engines have this. I'm looking for something better than the late-model pump on my serpentine 5.8, and I heard that this a saginaw based pump, so I wanted to check it out. Thanks all:D :D :D

dunno bout the pump but heres a start...the 5.0 was used 96-98 4 door only. i think in 99 they switched to the smaller v8.

My mom has a 97 V8 it has the lovely Ford Power Stearing unit. Older Ford Vans are all that I know of that came with a saginaw pump.

I am pretty sure that all the 5.0 exploders used the remote reservoir p/s pump. It is a very compact/small pump. A friend of mine asked Tom Lee if it was a good pump to run, he said yes. He also said that no mods would be needed. I haven't asked about using it with a ram set up, but my guess is that the saginaw is still the way to go for the ram.

I think you guys are right about it being on the 5.0's. Right now I'm trying to figure out if I wanna go with the remote reservoir, or the econoline setup. Much to my chagrin, after I put my 5.8 in my Bronco, I looked under the hood of my folks econolines-with more than a passing glance-and both of their 5.8's had a serpentine bracket with a Saginaw canned ham pump on it. You can imagine how :mad2: :nuke: I was after having had a hose made up for the other pump style. I figure I'll use this until it dies and then either do the 5.8 Saginaw or try the remote reservoir one (which appearantly uses the saginaw style pump?). What do you guys think would be the better pump? I'm sure for ease of install the 5.8 saginaw bracket would be easier, but I don't mind fabricating/grinding/welding for a better pump.

The 5.0L was used up to 2001. In 2002 the 4.6L became the V8 option.

Has anyone come up with a definitive answer on this post? I'm building a 82 bronco w/ a 95 351 fi engine, that will have a hydro steering ram.
I would like to use the best set up that will fit the stock brakets if at all possible.

Thanks

I own a '97 5.0L exploder. It has a remote res pump. I don't know what kind though. It mounts high with the a/c pump below it. The accessories are also pretty short, so there may be some issues with belt alignment.....or it could all be in the timing cover. I haven't really looked into it that close.

I have a 98 Explorer engine in my EB. I have 39.5" tires and still using the stock Explorer Power steering pump. It works freaking great. It is not as good as hydro ram, but I have taken it through little sluice, and such, without even a whine. This pump kicks ass and has for 4 years. And yes, it is has a remote tank.

I've also heard that some trucks used a saginaw pump. Is this true? Is there a pressure or volume advantage over the ford pump?
I've been told by someone that they got the pump from a 95 truck, with the brakets from a 89 van. But that all the info I've gotten.

Thanks for all the info so far.

You will also want to look at the Lincoln products. Many used the saginaw pumps with a Ford sepentine belt system. The mount holes are all Ford as well (brakets, etc. all fit Ford).

I got my serpentine style saginaw power steering bracket for my 5.0 jeep swap from an '87 econoline E150 van, and it had a 302 v8. The bracket will also fit the 351 too. The donor van did not have a/c but there is an idler pulley in place of it.
