I'll be towing my junk this summer across a couple of states and had a question . . .

First off - 2003 F250SD towing a 16' trailer w/@4000lb jeep.

Will I have to stop at the weigh stations or is that only for commercial big rigs?

Second, are those federal regulations requiring stops at weigh stations or state reg's?

Yeah, newb q, but I rather be safe than sorry . . .

TA . .

Don't stop. :D It's for commercial rigs or anyhting over 20k I think. I did go through one in WV , I drive a commercial truck ( 32k) and saw a guy in a U-Haul truck go through. The guy was only driving a 1 ton truck with a box on the back. They made him stop and gave him so much shit that when we drove by the on the way back to the garage he was still sitting there , 8 hrs later :( . I would have driven by it in that U-Haul.

Sounds like they looked inside and found something they didn't like. I didn't know when I came to one years back. They opened, looked, and sent me on the way with the knowledge that I didn't have to stop. I did notice that at Immigration Checkpoints they are having rentals pull in now.

If there are other requirements for going in, there will a sign. The one up the road from where I live says that 2 axled vehicles with hazardous material onboard, must pull in.

I have traveled practically coast to coast. I have seen a lot of truck weigh stations that are just commercials...some states want towbars taken in, other, well they wait for anyone to pull into a rest area and then get their prey.

I have been pulled over in two states...in just a white 2500 dodge CTD 4wd, and I am NOT commercial and that was WITHOUT a trailer...once was a diesel smog checkpoint in NJ, the other was in illinois (??) and they just wanted ALL trucks.

One of the main things is to JUST LOOK LEGAL!! If your towing a 10,000# trailer with an S-10, plan to get pulled over! Make sure everything is secured...keep the trailer load simple...just the jeep maybe a gascan or two (gas cans are illegal in certain states too), keep everything else in the truck (if you can)...out of site out of mind. And, weigh scales...unless they state "all vehicles over" (so many axles, over so much weight, etc.)...if in doubt...I'd play stupid, let them chase you down if they want to! If you don't look commercial, they shouldn't bother you.

If you are worried, take a map with weigh stations. Avoid them. Go around them...get a cb...follow the trucks.
