: XJ Exo-Cage ideas/pics?
punkskalar 10-29-2001, 11:25 AM Looking at possibly building an exocage for my XJ this summer, and was wanting to see some XJ cage pics... I have seen plenty of toyota's and wranglers, so thanks but no thanks there... I am thinking of tying it into the front and rear bumpers (custom, plenty strong) and then into the rocker skids as well (also custom)... The idea of a few bars coming through the cab in the rear passenger section and/or cargo area also seems appealing... Im not afraid to get into a little cutting of the body to so this... Any ideas or pics? Thanks, Hugh
herzog 10-29-2001, 11:28 AM I Don't know whos this is, but it has an exo cage...

punkskalar 10-29-2001, 11:36 AM That definitly a good look, a little bit over kill on the rear for me, i don't really need 600 pounds of tubing on the rear of my particular ride... I also think i want some protection around the front of the rig as well... More please?
borton 10-29-2001, 12:11 PM there was a green one at the vernal UROC, I saw some picks someplace, but can't find them now, but he wasn't running any doors.
borton 10-29-2001, 12:20 PM found them

Josh 89XJ 10-29-2001, 03:26 PM That is Dan Starc's XJ. Get in touch with Kurt Davis over at www.jeepnorthwest.com (http://www.jeepnorthwest.com) I'm pretty sure that he has Dan's e-mail or contact info since they go wheeling together. I got a chance to check out that rig last month at the NWCRA event, he was a safety inspector or something like that. One hell of a setup! I've seen a few pictures of him rolled at Moab, and the only damage that I can see on it in person were some scratches and minor dings on the tubes.
Weasel 10-29-2001, 09:43 PM That rear bumper is not part of the cage but a bumper offered from Trailready.

I think that is a custom bumper and you can see that it's part of the cage, tied into the sides. Heres the TR Bumper (http://www.trailready.com/images/XJ/xjr1.jpg) I think there was a XJ with one on the UROC web page that didnt hold up too well to a roll.

Weasel 10-29-2001, 10:13 PM Yep, your right. Should look at thing closer. Sorry
Economos 10-30-2001, 06:02 AM I believe that Dan Starc helped design some of the Trail Ready bumpers. IMHO, I think they are too bulky and they cost WAY too much. That bumper on the 6" RR XJ is just plain overkill.
punkskalar 10-30-2001, 01:10 PM Yeah, i know, what color should i paint my jeep, red bumpers are gay, etc... Seriously, any other pics or useful information would be greatly appreciated... I have already sat down and started designing, but I also plan on cutting the body up a bit before hand... Should prove to be interesting. I got a friend that does really good body work so maybe it will look a little bit more presentable in its next form...
Josh 89XJ 10-30-2001, 01:25 PM Hugh, hit me back channel and I will get you a few more pics. I snapped a few shots when I saw Dan at the NWRCA event last month. I have some digitals and some on regular film that I still haven't developed. Good luck, it should be a nice project if you do it right. They really suck if you do a crappy job though. I saw one on ebay not too long ago that looked terrible.
punkskalar 10-30-2001, 01:33 PM Thats cool... Im not sure about the private chats or whatnot and how to do them... I plan on doing it right, good clean welds, good tubing, and im planning on actually cutting the rear of the truck into a truck bed (did this once before with good results) or better yet doing a whole tube/buggy setup behind the rear passenger seats? Just looking for ideas and options right now really... Hugh

punkskalar 10-30-2001, 02:16 PM Thats what SX's or Boggers ar for... Besides, with an XJ, most of the weight is down low to start with... Ill be keeping all my gear really low as well (possibly getting a fuel cell and setting the tools in the stock locations... who know, all kinds of options, i figure if i get my plans worked up, i can revise them over and over until i know what i want for this summer.. Hugh
wanderingwillys 10-30-2001, 06:13 PM I am doing that to mine right now, I have a really solid front bumper and an even better rear swing out carrier that I have already tied the tube fenders I made from 1.5 sched 40 pipe to. I plan to make a hybrid cage with the exo portion similar to Dan's, (I have seen it a few times) and also have a good internal cage to prevent most of the problems with the body shifting inside the cage from lack of triangulation in the outer cage. I have all the internal stuff bent and fit just not mounted yet...
Matt
Mcstiff 10-30-2001, 06:20 PM I've been thinking about a hybrid cage too. I've also been wondering how hard it would be to strengthen or replace the fake frame and make a removeable top with a internal cage Any Ideas?

seRob 10-30-2001, 11:44 PM I saw a guy on the con a couple months ago with a pretty sweet cage set up. I didn't get pics, but my buddy did. I'll try getting ahold of him to see if he can send them to me, and I'll post em.

Dingo 10-31-2001, 12:06 AM I have some pics, but it I can't upload because they are too big....if anyone can give me a quick pointer to make them smaller, I can post some here pretty quick. I have some of the competition one and I think a few others......
Mcstiff 10-31-2001, 12:20 AM E-mail them to me I can crop them with photo chop
erikrs301 10-31-2001, 07:54 AM Here's one on eBay... http://cgi.ebay.netscape.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=595809792
punkskalar 10-31-2001, 09:05 AM Not only is that thing on E-Bay ugly, but it looks completely non-structural at most points... Thats a bit scary... Gotta Love that "REALSUV" plate... I plan on mine looking alot better than that for sure... Does anyone have 1 dimensional sketches of the 4 door cherokee from a side view, top view, etc...?
Economos 10-31-2001, 09:33 AM Woa, you aint kidding . Looks as if a little kid built it .

Bgcj5 11-01-2001, 12:55 PM I have seen pics of that XJ before and that guy did a killer job on it. That is one of the coolest XJ's I have ever seen now it just needs to be lifted some more
