What about angle iron? Works great for YJ's

5x3x.250 Angle, bolted to the body tub. Works great, no ground clearance loss either. Can also be very cheap, as in under $60 depending on how you do it and what you have lying around.

I have 6x6x1/4" angle iron on my YJ. cost me $47 for both pieces cut to the length I wanted. You will not hurt that angle iron.

I have got the Off Your Rocker guards and bounced those suckers off of everything and they hold up. I would recommend them to anyone. No clearance loss either. Great product and great company to deal with.

Funny you should mention this because I'm making a few to be available to you guys.

The ones I'm making will be very similar to the Tomkin 2"x4"x1/8" steel rocker skids. Mine will have 3 mounting points instead of two though, and unlike the Tomkin ones, mine won't hit the body tub after time.

The ends are angled and capped, then ground down for a one piece appearance. They are 2" by 3" however, instead of 2" x 4" so that I can make them lighter and cheaper without sacrificing their function as a step. They are mig welded by me.

I'm working on the prototype for my YJ right now, the drver's side skid is done, today I will weld on the mounts and test fit it.

I'm doing a limited production run on these, maybe 10 total, and I will start taking orders by the beginning of next week if everything goes smoothly.

Price will be $150 for a pair, unpainted. They will be sanded to take the rust off. If you want them painted with Ospho, which is transforms rust into a primer surface and prevents future rust, I can do that for $30. If you want them painted with either black matte or gloss paint, I will do that for an extra $30. I used to work in a body shop so I know how to paint properly as well.

I will include a skateboard type grip tape for your unpainted or primered skids for $10, or will include it for free and installed if you have me paint them. Shipping will be $20 via UPS. Shipping will actually cost a little more than this, but I'm willing to pay the extra myself to bring down shipping costs for you guys.

Let me know if you have any questions.
Those of you interested in a pair, email me exactly what you would want as a finish, etc. If you don't email me I could miss your message and then I would be off when I go to buy the material I need to make everyone's.

Thanks

Kevin

WEll I read your post about your doing a trial run on a previouse thread. I read they comments about your listed material wont cut it for the type of readers on this board. Yeahhhhh there is a share of folk who dont wheel hard but if they are on this board if they dont wheel hard yet... they will end up doing so

so....... save a fellow wheeler some buks and dont pedal a product here they will be replaceing later cause they bust em. Im a business man too.. and I have done a little peddling of my own... butttttt..... show respect man... dont disrespect folk by selling them something they dont need and as it sounds ur light weight stuff aint what people on this board need.

You say you have been here on this board long time... so then dont let the money go to ur head and make u be disrespectfull to us.

There is a guy on this board that goes by the name frametwister.
He s making some cool rocker guards for about $100. Im running them on my yj and have no complaints. They are made from 4" angle with dom tubing v cut and welded on to the corner of the angle. These things are over built, high clearance, and look good...
If you are interested give me a email and I can dig up his home phone# for you..

Like others above have said. 6"x6"x0.25" angle iron. Super cheap, hugs the body, nothing to make (all you have to do is drill holes in the metal,) and very strong. Holds up to highlifting on the rockers, slamming/sliding on rocks, and it never gets hung up on anything. I had some rocker guards before that did okay for $250, but the angle iron is stronger, lighter, cheaper. I got mine for free because my father in-law works maintenace for a school district and they tore down an old gym.

Bullfrog,

Do you happen to have a pic of what your 6x6x0.25 iron looks like on the Jeep? I am about to do a set of these (hopefully this weekend) and I am looking at how all the different sizes fit and look on the Jeep. Also how does the thickness of the iron affect the flare? I need to go under the flares and cover all the way to the front of the rear wheelwell (going to cover the rust).

Thanks.

Take some measurments.

Go to Pleasanton steal.

Have them make a 90 degree bend in two pieces of thick ass steel plate that is the length you need.

Take that steel home and put it on your jeep making adjustments with the sawzall as needed ans fasten it with bolts.

Whatchu get is
Rocker panels far stronger and less expensive then any you can purchace from a fabricator.

I agree with Rocktodd. i built mine with angle iron 3x3, and sprayed with a few coats of semi-gloss rustoleum, and they came out pretty good. I bolted them to the body, and am adding a couple cross bars soon to strengthen them up and make them attach to the tub to the area where the rubber pucs connect the body to the frame.

I should have gone a bit bigger and used 4x4 or 5X5 angle iron, so I will probably do that next, but this works for now.

E-mail if you would like a picture. I think uploading pics here was disabled or something ;)

This is bay far the best way to make rock ski's. The only problem I have is that you don't keep the rocks away from the body. So I would place some tubing, like nerf bars, welded to the 6x6 to provide this protection.

here are mine, I had some 6x6 1/4 angle iron bent, cut some old nerf bars for steps welded the sh&t out of them and bolted them up. I have $100 into mine that includes the rattle can paint.

Some others have said they have bent the nerf bars, I say bring it on.

Hey whats up with not being able to put pictures in here? If anyone wants to see them e-mail me.

Angle iron

PROS:
simple
easy
cheap
durable

CONS:
you don't get a cool sticker

bullfrog

Mine look just like rockslut's and similar to wheeling piazza. My wrangler had the plastic side steps so I drilled the holes in the iron to match the holes for mounting the steps and it bolted right up. I don't have a picture of it yet, but I know rockslut has had some pictures posted on this forum showing his tires where you can see the rockers. So far I haven't had any rocks damage the body above the rocker guards, but if the right shaped rock came around it is bound to happen. I'm not too worried about it, it adds "character" to the Jeep.

AS you can tell by my jeep its in need of some cool stickers :emb: :emb: :emb:

My concern was, most of my rockers are fiberglass due to major rust repairs.. As you can tell they have held up just fine..

I did flush mount the bolts just because my rockers and my corners are smooth..

I know a guy that did his the same time as mine for a TJ, his came out nice, he even got some shiny aluminum for the tops because his jeep was black..
