I've got a J4000 rear D44 that measures about 66" which needs to be cut down to match the front d44. I'm sending the shafts to Moser to have the one side cut down about 4 inches.

Now, about the housing. Do I want to cut the outer cup off, shorten the tube, then reweld the cup on? Or should I just cut center and wrap it in more more tubing (similar to JeepGods D60)? I'm looking at strenght issues here.

With the housing stripped of axles, backing plates and everything cut the end off the housing about 1 1/2" in from the backing plate flange. Then cut off the 4" and reweld the end back on with a jig.

I cut the tube at the pig and cut the remainder of the tube out of the pig in pieces, then shortened the tube the the length I wanted and beveled the edges, heated the pig and cooled the tube and beat it back in with a ten pound sledge,,,,

Thats alot more work than it needs to be. Also that pattern in your picture doesn't look good. It looks like it is way out on the toe so I hope that isn't where you stoped setting it up.
