: where to start on a 67 Scout 800?
robselina 05-31-2003, 12:55 PM Hey dudes, first time posting on Pirate. I was given a 67 Scout 800 that I passed along to my dad but I'm going to fix her up for him. (I really hate having to work on 4x4s but I guess I'll do him a favor :D ) Right now it's just a quick and dirty fix to get her on the trail, nothing too extreme. It's beat up and doesn't run, so first step is to get the heap running I figure. I've got the points working fine, carb needs to be rebuilt at this point and the wiring has been screwed up entirely .
Anyway, current plan is to go SOA front and rear with the stock D27s, weld the rear spider gears, slap my stock CJ rims on it (looks like the same bolt pattern) and then throw on the 31x11.50 Mickey Thompson Baja Claws that are sitting on my Wagoneer (she's getting a 14FF and D60 with 38.9" tires). There's a bunch of other misc. stuff that will need to be done and I'll throw in a roll cage and do some body work to her as well.
I wanted to get your general impression of what I should be doing with this rig. What are the major weaknesses, things that should be swapped ASAP, etc? Like I said, not going too large right now, just making a decent beater. It's the 67 Scout 800 with what I think are D27s front and rear, drums front and rear, manual steering, manual brakes and the 196 (?) I4 (pretty sure). Some rust on the body, mostly surface. Frame looks totally solid.
Thanks for the input dudes, here's the pile right now if you're curious:

MochaMike 05-31-2003, 02:34 PM I'm pretty sure the rear should be a D44.
D27s are junk.
Disc fronts would be better.
If your going to go SOA right away, get a set of Scout II or Waggy D44s.
Rather than a proportioning valve, get a Brake MC (double res.) from a late 70s Mustag II, it will bolt right in & clear the fender (well it worked on my 80).
They're like $15.
Wago4000 05-31-2003, 02:45 PM My white 67 had D27s front and rear. I'm currently slowly workin on puttin in a pair of 73 Wag axles... I would definately agree with puttin in a dual res master cylinder, much safer.
What are you doing with the axles from your Wag?
Oh yah, i'm from the IFSJA too...(74 Wag over there)
MochaMike 05-31-2003, 02:49 PM OK, maybe it was 68 that they switched to a rear D44...

My Brother's '67 800 with a 266 V-8 had the D44 rear. I think they put them in as an upgrade for the V-8's.
SOA on D27's?   You really need to lay down the crack pipe. :flipoff2:
Doing a spring over on a Scout is much more involved than welding on a few spring perches. Make good use of the search button, Newbie. ;)
RustoleumWhite 05-31-2003, 09:36 PM SOA on D27's is a waste.
Besides, 31's will fit on a Stock 800 practicaly on there own... 3-4" lift kit even better.
D27's will :nuke: eventualy, but run them till they blow then get D44's and do the SOA (if you still want to)
those are 31 Claws on your Heep??? Sure look more like 33's, but what ever.
Search around and check out the BB (http://binderbulletin.org) , search for lift options for 80/800's. There is really only one specific lift kit for them (offered by Mr. Scout), but many people have made specific aplication Jeep CJ kit work well...
Get it running good and solid, slap the 31's on, trim to fit if required, and go play. Then take it from there. Oh-ya, and the bolt pattern is 5 on 5.5, common to CJ's and Fords.
robselina 06-01-2003, 05:40 PM thanks for the input guys. Definitely will ditch the stock master cylinder, maybe try and figure out power brakes too (don't really know about that one).
So it's not worth even messing with the D27s huh? I figured I'd see what they could do but what the hey, axles are cheap around here, might be a good excuse to put 44s front and rear in there. I'd use the stock waggy axles when I trade them out but they've got ultra crappy gearing (2.73 :( ) and to top it off the front is driver's side drop, so it's no good for the CJ or Scout  .
Just so you know RustoleumWhite, the CJ in the pic has 35x13.50s :D , not 31s or 33s. The Wagoneer w/ 31x11.50s is not in the pic.
If I get some time tomorrow I'm going to pull the carb and start that project. Thanks,
Rob
robselina 06-01-2003, 09:56 PM BTW, it is in fact a D44 out back. I hadn't looked at it in months, for some reason I thought it was much more wimpy.......
MochaMike 06-02-2003, 12:37 AM It will be a 16 spline.
It's not great, but it will work.
Much better than a 27...;)

Nope, it's 19 spline...Fords had 16 spline axles:flipoff2:
Now, regarding this topic, Take everything out of the Scout, throw it away, buy a 3/4 or 1 ton Truck of choice and swap everything into it...The only parts left on my 64 are the body, lights, and heater (Which I don't use:D )
:)

Thats similar to mine: 1/3 Scout (Body), 1/3 Jeep (Axles & TCase), 1/3 Chebby (Engine & Tranny)...:D
binderbound 06-02-2003, 04:09 PM isnt it a 10 spline? or is that the 27 thats a 10?
