: Transfer Case Problems

first off, I know nothing about fords. But my brother may be buying an '85(??) Ford F150.

We put it in 4wd with hub locked in and it would bind and not go anywhere. We unlocked the hubs and it was still binding. Then we locked the hubs in again and shifted the T-Case to 2wd and it would move again. So I have oviously narrowed it down to the t-case.

What t-case do these things have? any common problems with them? Any other info you guys can give is greatly appreciated.



I know the simple way to do it is to Not Buy The Truck, but my dad just bought the truck to resell, so I will end up having to fix it either way.

It should have either a Borg-Warner 13-45 or an NP 208. They should be pretty common.

First thing to do is make sure both differentials have the same gear ratios. Second what kind of surface were you on(pavement-dirt-sand-mud-gravel) If it was pavement or concrete it is going to bind and not go anywhere. Ford transfercases are just like any other T-case. in my expirence it is most likely the 208 in an 85(at around here)

I figured out its an NP208.

I was on a slick mud surface.

Any common failures within the transfer case?

Lock your T-case in with the hubs in the free position and try to turn the front D-shaft. If it turns freely your chain may be broke and bunching up against the case,However, I would think the case would be busted if this were the case. To really diagose the problem you will have to open it up.
