: shiftkit vs ecu mod

Curious as to what the difference between a shift kit and a reprogrammed or aftermaket chip are in relation to an auto tranny. I know that transgo and similar shift kits alter shift points and the engagement of the tranny but isn't this what an aftermarket chip such as jetchip superchip etc do? Not quite sure myself. Looking to uncover the truth......

The chips help some but you really get more bang for your buck by actually modifying the tranny. I tried the programmers on my truck and they were a waste of money....mostly just a gimmick to me.

I installed a Trango Kit in my daily driver and its been a different truck ever since. Its in a 96' F-150 4x4 with a 302 (mass air), 4R70W auto tranny w/3.55's and 32 x 12.50's on 15x8's and it will hit second gear when you are into it with the computer chip, power pulleys, K&N FIPK, shorty headers, single cat, single flowmaster and 2 1/2" pipe.

Not that I get into that hard all the time but its there if you want it. I pulled the chip (Hypertech) a year or so ago because I think its shiat and gas (93 octane) was too expensive.

The tranny was completely different after the install. No more waiting for it to go into gear.....I can hold it to any RPM in any gear with full throttle upshifts as I like them or as the tranny sees fit. No more yo-yo shifting when towing. No funny clunks or noises. It was a GREAT buy. Probably the best mod...shorty headers adn the exhaust are a close second. But the shift kit and install was cheaper. :D

If I had it to do all over again and gas money was no big deal I would...and probably will...buy a custom burned Superchip brand chip and a bigger mass air meter.

I have a very low opinion of Hypertech and JET.

HTH.

So basically a shift kit just stiffens up the shift and limits "shift overlap". While an aftermarket ecu chip alters the points at which a tranny shifts but not the manner in which it does so. Does this sound right?
