I want to convert a TJ Dana 44 to a 6 lug wheel.
will a waggy 44 shafts bolt up or would they need to be machined. Specificly the spline count, lenght and the bearing flange plate.

Also how reliable are the welding two piece axles.

Doubt it will fit without some sort of modding. The narrow track waggy is 58.4 while the wide track is 62.5. TJ's are 60"

What's your thought process on this mod? You having probs keeping 4 studs on and want the added benefit of having two more?

I have a waggy D44 front axle in the works. It is 6 lug. So It would be great to have 6 lug in the rear too. I have 2 Long sides rear shafts from a waggy. I was thinking of getting these machined to fit the TJ's housing. The added benifit is that the Waggy's rear drums are 11". More stoping than the wimpy drums that come on the TJ.

Just happen to have stock shafts here next to me...total length to end of the shaft is 29-7/8" on one and 29-3/8" on the other, 30 spline count.

sniperfire,
Those are the waggy lengths? The longs sides I have are 34". The are from an AMC 20.

No...those are the stock D44 TJ rear axleshaft lengths I gave...

I'd change the the front 6 lug and put the GC disks on the rear TJ D44. Disks all around live a lot longer in the mud and lock big rubber down a lot better than drums on the rocks.

I thought about this some more last night....

Aren't AMC 20 shafts 29 spline and also smaller diameter than a 44? If I remember correctly the only thing bigger (AMC 20 vs D44) is that it has a larger R&P.

But yeah, like he said...put on some GC disk brakes. Also you could send your shafts to Moser or someone and have it filled and redrilled to match your front end for like $30.

So on another note....are you putting GM steering knuckles on your waggy front and a hi-steer?

wait wait wait... from some of the posts above it sounds like you are trying to use AMC20 shafts in a dana 44. that probly won't work...

anyway, the wagoneer shafts are ONE PIECE. unlike the CJ shafts which are two piece. shafts are 29 spline, 1.25" (whoop de do, .05" and 1 spline difference compared to d44). the real gem is in the ring and pinion. ring gear=8.875" and pinion diameter=1.62. that's the same pinion diamete as the dana 60 ;). dana 44 has a 1.44" pinion.

why not just find a wagoneer with a rear 44 and swap the whole thing in? i'm assuming you've already got a rear 44 on your TJ (5 bolt). just take the gears outta that, swap them into the waggy 44, and you've got what you wanted.

a front 44 can't be changed to 5x4.5 or whatever wranglers are, well at least not easily or cheaply. Get the rears redrilled if the flange is big enought o hold a 5.5" bolt circle. I would just swap in a wagoneer 44 though to get the width closer to the front

Ditto.

Redrill your existing shafts or, better yet, have stronger custom shafts made by Moser, Dutchman, whomever...
