convertiyota 11-23-2001, 11:37 AM That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Looks like it's time to move.
FYRMAN 11-23-2001, 12:09 PM Welcome to AmeriKKKa.
At my mom's house we had a 53 Chevy 1 ton, 63 Mercury Comet, 66 Chevy Biscayne, and my 88 S10 all parked behind an 8 foot fence. None of them ran, none of them were registered, but all of them were titled, and all of them were project rigs. the Biscayne was a racer, the Comet was a cruiser, the 53 was gonna be the tow rig for the 4x4 S10. The city went as far as to open my gate, count up how many vehicles were there, look for tags, then write me up for having more than one project vehicle. I had to get rid of all of them but the S10 (cuz I was still paying on it) becuse no one could store them for me. If they weren't gone in two weeks, they were going to fine me $500 a day for another two weeks, then hire someone to get rid of them for me, and give me the bill on top of the fine. Bastards didn't even shut my gate when they left. My dog got out and they called animal control. Cost me a pretty penny on top of that to get her back.
mudlite 11-23-2001, 12:57 PM What you need to do is get your hands on the by-laws. Read through everything that pertains to this and try to find loop holes.
These would be: no tires are to be allowed on the side yard property in view of the street. then move them to the back yard.
lock your gargae up. These guys are by-law , not police. I'm sure they need a warrent to search your garage.
Try to keep the clutter out of view, but visible by your a$$ hole neighbour.
I have these troubles with my Bus, but is you find a way , stick it to them were you can.
:flipoff2:
Go to city hall and get yourself a copy of the by-laws. Same shit happened to me twice in the last year. I got my lawyer involved and they finally left me alone. Stupid neighbors don't have anything better to do than call the city.
Tass
Welby 11-23-2001, 01:31 PM That is soooooo fawked up it isn' even funny
I would never want to live in a housing plan (not saying you do, cause I don't know) because of all the stupid assed rules they have...I'll live in a dumpy house with some acreage, if I have to, just to have the freedom....Unbelievable.
IMUZ ME 11-23-2001, 04:20 PM Well, I just got a news letter from Citrus Heights the other day stressing the fact that the only repair that is to be done in city limits is oil changes and sparkplugs! NO engine overhalls or vehicle restorations!! WTF is that all about? What I due in my Garage and in my back yard is my business! It falls within the curtalage of your home! If it is in plain view that is another story! What you due in your backyard and in your garage that is not in PLAIN VIEW is your business! I have a feeling one day soon we are going to hear of a case like this going to a high court! Luckily my neighbors are cool and I keep all my spare parts in my garage or on the side of my house! Only thing that you can see is a nice front yard and my daily driver in the driveway! If some :rainbow: people from the city came up to me and told me I could not due fabrication and fix my wheeler in my garage I would proptly tell them to Suck my DICK and get off my property! If you have a problem and want to look around come back with a WARRENT!! There is no judge in this world that is going to give some city ordinance worker a warrant to come look in your garage to give you a fine for working on a vehicle! As for the guy above who had the city workers open his gate and look around, I would complain if I were you! That could be viewed as tresspassing! And if your cars were not visible in "plain view" from the street then it gave them no probable cause to be snooping around your house! TEll up to PISS off!!!
Tx Outlaw 11-23-2001, 04:38 PM All this makes me more happy that I live in the country, have a 30'x40' shop (9-1/2' to second deck) and GUNS!!! Someone comes snoopin up around my property probably won't be going back home!
SeanP 11-23-2001, 11:36 PM That's bullshit about not being able to do engine work or metal fabrication. We have this little thing in America called the constitution and our rights to "pursuit of happiness." If our happiness is defined by welding our broken jeeps, then so be it. Other then neighborrhood covenents governing what houses look like from the street, everything else is encroachment. Normally I don't support the ACLU, but I would give the local office a call about this.
SeanP
FULLSIZE 11-24-2001, 12:33 AM all i can say is that is :rainbow: ! my neighbors know its time to bring over the beer when they see my "dr. frankestein" flashes. i can't honestly see how they can get away with harrassing you like that. have them show you the laws that state that you cant repair or restore your vehicle. when did that law get passed and who voted for it? are they crazy?! when did the clintons move to sac? sorry about your situation. i say dont go down without a fight:usa:
Travis Waldher 11-24-2001, 12:44 AM Let me tell ya something. Get your by-laws and read them VERY carefully!
We got the same bylaws in our neighborhood regarding maintenance... But out neighbors never bothered us. Part of the reason I don't have a crap strewn all over the yard, I keep the mess in the garage, and if I am swapping engines I try to keep everything around me looking clean. (But I have also torn off the front clips of cars in the driveway.) Also don't generally run the air compressor between the hours of 10-11pm and 8am out oc courtesy to the neighbor closest to it.
We have never been bothered. luckily have some cool neighbors, but also you know why? Cause EVERYONE is breaking bylaws here and there. If they take me down, they all go down. I'll report them.
So if the old fart wants war, give it to him. First clean up your problem... then go after the by-laws I am sure he broke and didn't even know it.
You have got to be kidding.
They are trying to tell you that you can only do sparkplug changes in your garage?
Tell them to go ahead and arrest you. WTF gives them the right to tell you what work you can and cant do inside your house?
If anything the insurance company might be able to say if you weld you wont have insurance. But no law officials.
Search and seizure is a big Ammendment. Very strong.
Nomatter where you are. I say get some money hungry attorney to back you up then sue them for wrongfull proscution.
I wish they would try that shit with me. All they have to do is piss off the wrong person. And they wont do it again.
Ordinances on what you can weld in your garage? Fawkin assholes.. Mutha FAWK I am pissed. Who the Fawk do they think they are? Gistopo?
Thats enough to make someone go POSTAL on there ass!
Fawk am I pissed.:mad3:
Toy 4Runner Man 11-24-2001, 12:18 PM It looks like they are trying to go after you as automotive repair/welding business, instead of a residence. Looks like your neibor go ahold of wanna-be cop enforcer! Surely sounds like time to talk to a lawer, and get a copy of the regs for the area you are in. Never allow any officals on your property without a warrent, and keep everything as hidden as hell! If there is no viewable from the street, there is no probal cause. I had a local animal control come onto my property before, and I should of sued! For sure, talk to a lawer ASAP, and see if a hungry lawer will go after these idiots that are taking the law into their own hands, and making it up as they go.

Man that does suck, but that is what you get for living in California !! LOL
Seriously go to City Hall and get the bylaws on this. It sounds like they are blowing smoke up your ass.
To bad you do not live here in Alaska. Shit if you do NOT have 4 cars in the yard that do not run you are considered a YUPPIE!:smokin:
wheelinjps gal 11-24-2001, 01:25 PM OMG if we lived there wheelinjp would make us bankrupted!!! He pretty much built our 5 from ground up. He welds at 10 to 11 at night we have nice neighbor thank god. Man I think you should find the loop holes and if you can't than you should move. Got to love the government. :flipoff2:
zachv 11-24-2001, 02:09 PM I'd pour gallons of oil in your neighbors yard late one night and then call the EPA a month later so he would be fined!! You cannot put up with that stuff--find the laws that you are "breaking" and work around them.
This is what happens when we all are not vigilant in our local government. The fags with to much time on their hands make all these crazy laws and we never know about them until we get some jerk trying to mess with us.
Good luck.
Flatbed 11-24-2001, 02:21 PM Is there a nieghborhood that they can put all these anul a$$holes in? The whole point of havin your own space is to be able to do your own thing. WTF, why don't people do something about crap that really matters. Screw'em I say if they want to complain... give'em a reason. Shoot guns in the front yard, play Rap music very loud or anything that is loud and annoying. Oh, sorry, those would be legitimate complaints. What was I thinking. Go after the Bastards. There are worse offences and they may actually see that. Although doubtful, they are the gov. Aw hell, this is disappointing. Seems like folks like are screwed nomatter what we do. For what it is worth :flipoff2: :flipoff2: them.
Josh 89XJ 11-24-2001, 02:51 PM That just plain sucks. I had a similar situation with my homeowners association a while back...now I have a restraining order against the bastards and they can't come within 150 feet of my house :flipoff2: Like everyone else said, read your bylaws carefully because they sure as hell can't infringe on your constitutional right to pursue happiness in your own damn home behind closed doors!
I got around the a$$hole's stupid rules because it turns out that my cul-de-sac and the streets that lead to it are a private drive. The homeowner's association wanted it to be a more "cozy and down home" type of place so they labeled the streets like that. Well, since it is a private drive, they have no legal rights to come down there in the first place. If they come close to my house I don't have to shoot them...they get arrested by the city! I win, they lose. BAWHAHAHAHAH. Now my ski boat is in my front driveway along with my Jeep. The bright blue lights of me welding can be seen through the windows of my garage and they can't do jack.
On a more productive note, talk with your neighbors and see what they have to say. Ask them if the appearance of your house bothers them, if not, would they please sign this petition saying that they have no problems with it. I did that :D Also, keep it clean. All of my junk is behind my high fences or in my garage/shop. You wanna try writing me up for a messy garage? Good luck. Don't let the bastards walk all over you, but don't be a jerk either. If your house looks like $hit on the outside, you probably already know this so clean it up. If you look like the typical suburban house but inside your garage you are having a blast, then take them to court if they say you can't. I'm sure the ACLU would love you back you up on that.
scottz 11-25-2001, 02:14 AM I had this same problem last year. It's the craziest shit.
I live on a half acre in Rio Linda, my neighbors are a car lot, a sheetmetal shop, a tire place and an old bag that has the county on speed dial.
Scary part is that I don't work on ANYTHING there, I store it all behind a fence and the property is zoned agicultural. I got fed up with this crap years ago and rented a shop. About 30 minutes from now I'm going to go out in my rented shop and replace a quarter panel on a 96 Exploder and its going to be LOUD and nobody can do SHIT.
Best way to limit damage is to keep stuff as tidy as possible and most impotaintly you need a BIG FENCE and TALL BUSHES and NO TRESSPASSING signs all over.
If you do get tagged, best thing to do is to call the code enforcement guy and be as polite as possible, tell the dude you can't belive anyone complained and there must be some sort of mistake. These dudes get yelled at and called dicks 5 days a week by angry gearheads, if you're polite it goes a long way.
Hide the problems as quickly as possible and get something in writing when they come out and call it good. I've been told that if you're inspected more than 3 times in a certain amount of time you can sue the county for harrassment.
after everything is cleared up make a point of confronting the neighbor in person about it. No need to be polite either, people can learn to ignore things when they realize they'll be held accountable for acting like dicks.
SHERPA 11-25-2001, 06:51 AM And I thought I had it bad in Campbell.....
But then again, the code-enforecment guy cancelled my appointment with them to come out and check out my place
after I've spend 8 weeks cleaning up stuff... Next week is my
turn.... Shit, they even are having the city planner come out.
(I don't like that kinda notice)..............
scwafish 11-25-2001, 08:41 AM YIKES!!!! This is total BS...is anybody on this BBS an Attorney? Somebody needs to help this guy. If I was you I'd get an attorney to fire back an ugly letter, threatening legal action. While it sucks to have to do that, most Countys are strapped for cash and getting into a court battle over something this small isnt likely...I bet they will go away. Good luck.
i live in a small city out in the country. a few months ago my landlord got a call that he had to have the shed painted. i knew this was just a bitch cause they didnt have anything they could find on paper to bust my balls about the 6 axles laying in my yard, the trannies, extra tires, broken ride on mower and so on. so we painted it and i cleamed up outside a litlle. well about a month went by and he got a call saying there way an illegal unregistered vehicle in the driveway. so i called the landlord back and told them this guy is full of shit. my jeep is registered, insured and inspected. landlord was ok about it he likes me and i am a law enforcement officer. so i got the name of the city ordinance guy called hime up left messages for about a week explaining he didnt know his ass from elbow and that if hes gonna accuse someone of somthing he should be correct about it. i also told him i believed he was harrassing me and i will file a complaint. i havnt heard from him since. not even about the 4th vehicle i bought the 64 jeep behind the shed haha.
Sillyneck 11-25-2001, 02:51 PM Matt...if you can get it towed up to my shop you are welcome to keep it there...I ahve a friend that is interested in it too...and if he buys it it would be sent to my shop anyways.
Po' riggity 11-25-2001, 04:25 PM Thats got to be the biggest load of crap I think Ive ever heard! Thats ridiculous! That shouldnt be an issue. You were on your land, in your garage, and therefore you should be able to do what you want. WHAT A CROCK!

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
The majority of people are happy to have their auto work done by garages, that probably couldn't give a sh*t if it's done right or not. Bullshit if I'm gonna spend $200 for some garage to change $20 worth of brake pads, and find "Some other things wrong that we took care of". Unless it's under warranty, I'll never take my stuff to a garage to have some underpaid, underappreciated, disgruntled punk work on it. If you want something done right, do it yourself.
You sound like you're all for the banning of people doing their own maintenence on their cars  And how do you get the know-how to begin with if you don't practice?...
Who did all the work on your ride? I hope you did, or I'll have to chalk you up as a checkbook wheeler. Do you want someone telling you you're now forbidden from working on your vehicles??? I doubt it.
The people that do work on their own vehicles, most likely have a keen interest in autos, and are more likely to take the time to do things right. All the homos that don't know how to change their oil, don't want to get their nails dirty, and would rather pay $25 for it, than take a chance on getting their Tommy Jeans dirty :rainbow:
I hope you have no political aspirations.
Rover Addiction 11-26-2001, 09:38 AM I am in the same boat. I got sited for a whole bunch of crap by my nazi homeowner's association. They apparently don't buy used cars because they claimed that since my truck was sitting in the driveway with a temp tag, it's illegal. Then some bastard stole the temp sticker outta the back window while I was at work. I have it at a shop now, but it's painted up red, white, and blue and will be great to have in my driveway once California gives me new plates! They can't say anything about the paint job on the vehicle!
Good luck guys!

JeepinIan 11-26-2001, 09:52 AM The reason there are laws like that is the people who leave crap laying around looking like crap!
In the county I live in down here, youaren't suposed to work on your ride, but as long as you keep the area neat and don't let it look like a junkyard, no-one says anything. Also, I keep the noise down after 10 pm so I don't piss off my neighbors.
If you don't like the rules, move. That's why I do not live in a housing development.
BTW zachv, pouring oil in the neighbors yard is real grown up and adult like way to handle a problem. With attitudes like that, it's no wonder the eco-nazi's don't need to look very hard to find reasons to close land. I wouldn't doubt it if you were one of the sorry fawks who left trash on the trails expecting someone else to pick it up.
rokkroler 11-26-2001, 10:42 AM well i have confronted the shitty neighbor about the complaint and he denies that he would ever do such a thing!!!:flipoff2: :flipoff2: ......SURE!!!!....thats why the same complaint HAS came from him about other neighbors in the past 5 years!!!!:flipoff2: :flipoff2: .....and on top of that he is a huge a$$ hole!!!!!!!!!!!..........so what im goin to do is take a few friends and some shovels and dig his pretty perfect lawn up and replant it in the driveway!!!!!!!!!!:D :D :D :D ..........dirt lawn and a lawn driveway!!hahahahahaha.....and on top of that he is a huge alcoholic, which means he goes down to the local bar 5 nights a week......so the next time i see his car out infront of the bar im callin the highway patrol and make up some story on how he almost hit a neighbor kid the night befor and that im scared to have him drivin on the road......:mad3: :mad3: ....he'll then not have a licence bein 76 and all with a pacemaker...that folker. ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS THAT THERE IS NOT ENOUGH JUSTICE I CAN HAVE FOR A$$HOLES LIKE THAT. HES GONNA WISHED HE FOLKED WITH ANYONE ELSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:mad3: :nuke: :nuke: :mad3:
ironpig70 11-26-2001, 10:58 AM its sacramento my uncle lives near mccellan air base and these people knocked on his door and told him he had to many cars in the yard 4 all daily drivers all registered his 2 kids live with him. what is there a limit. next he has these oversized wooden lawn chairs in the yard next to the garage they are in good shape next to the garage they said they must be removed in two weeks or they will be back in two weeks to remove them and proceed with a fine.
i for one don't mind codes covenents and rescritions but this is bullshit. what i do in my garage is my buisness. i guess i'll leave the door locked and my side gate and fence, well it was to be a 4' chainlink guess it will be 8' and wood and always locked. then when these bastards come by the will need a warrant. hell here in lodi you can be fined if you water on the wrong day.:flipoff2:
i'm moving soon enough two acres big fence around the whole place damn place will look like a fort.:p
Maine Jeepah 11-26-2001, 01:20 PM .....mental note...dont, move, to California.
If I were you all I'd put all the wrenching and wheeling stufff behind a nice pretty 8 foot fence, with BIG no tresspassing signs, and beware of dog signs.
Then I'd place some fine attack dogs, properly licensed of course, behind it.
Anyone wants to do an "inspection" tell it to the dogs.
As for the neighbor...he'll be dead soon enough...find what really pisses him off, and do it, and you'll speed him on his way to his dirt nap.
Neighbors suck.
(except the pretty female ones) ;)

randii 11-26-2001, 02:08 PM Get to know the rules:
http://www.co.sacramento.ca.us/planning/index.html
For an even closer look:
http://www.co.sacramento.ca.us/planning/enforce/index.html
Major automotive repair is not allowed in residential zones and includes all automotive work not defined as minor automotive repair. Minor automotive repair is defined as brake part replacement, minor tune-ups, change of oil and filter, repair of flat tires, lubrication and other similar operations. Minor automotive repair is allowed in residential zones only on vehicles that are registered to occupants of the property. If the minor repairs occur outside of a fully enclosed garage they may not result in the vehicle being inoperable in excess of 24 hours.
From experience, the last sentence is the one they use to really enforce any questions.
They SUCK, I know -- I have paid about $200 in fines so far this calendar year. Figure out the system, though, and work around it. Drop me a line: randii@4x4wire.com if you want to vent a bit... I'll share some of the things I have done.
Realistically, tho, keep in mind that 99% of the county's actions are started by individual complaints, and only 1% are started by a roving county inspector NOT following up on a complaint. Identify the complainant and make that person happy, and odds are that you'll be fine, once the dust settles.

Eric Ruhl 11-26-2001, 05:50 PM There's a guy in State College, PA who found a unique way to deal with something like this. He got in trouble for having a car on his property that didn't run (or something like that, been awhile since I heard the background story) after someone complained. Know what his solution was? He called it "art." He then proceeded to turn his yard into the ugliest yard you've ever seen full of different forms of "art" (a giant pink pig comes to mind) and there wasn't a damn thing anyone could do about it :D :D :D The car is still there too I think... anybody here in State College? coyote 11-26-2001, 07:58 PM rokkroler, just keep it simple, call your local sheriff and not the highway patrol, explain that this guy drinks and drives, their is usually a 1-800 number you can call or call your local MADD and they will help...my neighbor called the cops on me for some stupid city ordinance and when my friend and local cop showed up and didn't do anything other then call some buddies to check out my ride he got real pissed and filed a complaint...this guy is a known drunk and it was in short order that he found out that cops stick together and the next time be polite and approach your neighbor as a friend, it will pay-off in the long run, also keep your stuff clean and like your neighborhod, be careful on ordinance's and if you don't like it take the day off work and visit your district rep and explain yourself to him, the political stuff works but you must voice your opinion as silence is bliss....

so far tho no complaints. the Daughter of the guy next door is one of my best friends, and my mom is friends with the neghbors on the other side, i've helped fix a couple cars across the street and even the 2 old guys that walk the block like me cause i'm always polite and talk with em when they come by. I'm only really worried about one neighbor but so far he has been cool, and i just make sure to clean up, and zip tie the wheels in the wheel wells when i'm done so everything looks nice.
rokkroler 11-28-2001, 02:14 PM WELL YOUR LUCKY YOU DONT HAVE 1 SHITTY NEIGHBOR CAUSE THAT IS ALL IT TAKES!!!!!!!!:nuke: :nuke: :nuke:
CrazyHorse 11-28-2001, 02:55 PM I have had similar probelems in Vallejo. My BOSS 302 project normally resides in the garage, but was moved into the driveway and put under a custom fit car cover while I was putting the 5.0 in my bronco. Well Psycho Bitch (my neighbor) decided to complain about the "abandoned car" in my driveway (seen many cars get abandoned under $150 car covers lately?), so the city came by to cite it, since they couldn'y find a liscence plate on the car (the body is in the middle of paint prep) and the cover was locked on the asshole took a knife to the cover and cut a hole in it to read the VIN number to put on the citation telling me I had 10 days to remove it from the premises or into a completely enclosed building. I got my revenge on the neighbor by finishing up the motor swap at 5am and pulling up the alley to right under her bedroom window, where I allowed the engine to warm up open header so that I could retorque the heads on the motor...:flipoff2: luckily she has since moved, and none of the other neighbors have any probelems as long as I keep the driveway and visible areas picked up (except that my one neighbor wishes the BOSS 302 was his toy instead:D ) I cant wait to get out of school though, so I can get my own place with plenty of room to play with my toys...oh yeah, forgot the best one: the city also towed my wheeling trailer out of my driveway as a "dismantled Vehicle" they decided that even though it had a hitch, and a special construction VIN # that it was really a ranger pickup missing the cab and front suspension...fucking idiot code enforcement police officers in Vallejo...
