In your opinion, would it possible to wire a set of el cheapo 55w "tractor lights" into the reverse lights on the trailer as well as into a switch? I'd like them to be able to see when backing up, (had a few overcorrections when backing into the d-way last night), as well as being able to turn them on manually if loading the jeep at night.

Thoughts?

Anything is possible with wire.

What kind of trailer are we talking about?

And no, your back-up light circuit isn't big enough to handle a couple 55w lights.:D

Yep, it's a 7 pin. That's what I was wondering . . . If I could wire the switch into the constant power to the trailer (like for a winch, correct?), then have something else wired into the reverse lights?

FYRMAN - IYO, what lights could be wired into a reverse switch so as not to fry the wiring?

Thanks from the newb!

I've got a setup like this on my 02 Ram / CTD. What I did was took a Constant duty solenoid (fukr is HUGE) (its a contatant duty solenoid I believe for some application like a fork lift or something, bought at the auto parts store) and wired it into the battery, all fused and all. I cut the reverse light wire, and wired it into one of the "switched" on's for the solenoid, and I also put a switch on the other "switched" poles. Its now setup so if I put the truck into reverse the lights all come on automatically, or I can flip the small switch to power the realy. The output goes to not only the reverse lights (stock) but 2 floods attached to the rear hitch (under bumper) and through a large quick disconnect plug that is hooked into the trailer, this supplies power to x5 huge flood / work lights on the trailer. There are x2 behind the rear fender pointed rearward, x2 at the front corners of the trailer deck that are crossed over the deck, (they point to the opposite side to "flood" the deck with light, and 1 more light is on the 10k jack in the center of the tongue jack to add even more lights / help with working on stuff if on the trailer. I've got pictures of the trailer here: Trailer (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=146893) . You can't see the ones real well that are at the very back, but it gives you an idea.

I would wire it on the trailer side.

Run the hot lead out of the trailer plug to where ever you can mount the soleniod. Run the back up light wire to the trigger side of the soleniod. Run the floodlights from the output side of the solenoid. If you want to put it on a switch, mount the switch on the trailer, and just walk back to switch it on.

As for lights that could run off of that back up light circuit? Clear sealed beam lights like you see on the back of cargo trailers would work.

A light like this.
