It used to be that diesels were exempt from smog checks, but
I don't think that's the case any longer. Kali just passed much
tougher diesel emission laws.

In MO, diesels or any truck over 8,500 GVWR are exempt from emmissions testing. Actually, outside of STL & KC, all vehicles are exempt.

In Kali all car and trucks etc that are "gas" powered are tested no matter what the GVWR. And diesels can be pulled in to a CARB inspection and given a "snap idel" test too.

They have testing for them here in AZ. But easy to pass. My p/u no problem.

But my motorhome (fullsize semi) I was worried about. Its a Mack 350 with the injection pump turned way up. It pours out coal black smoke (too much but I'll fix it later).

When I went to get it tested. They let me drive it on the dyno. All you had to do was go form idle to redline and back to idle 5 times. I just pressed on the peddle real slow and easy, so it didn't blast out black smoke.

Passed no sweat.

The test in Kali, when they stop you and test a diesel, they want you to snap the throtle wide open as fast as it can be. Even though most wouldn't drive a truck that way normaly.

Any detail on the new laws? I'm about to start the process of getting a fed. diesel registered in Cali. Any info would be appreciated.

I was supose to mash it as fast as I could. But I knew if I did that the techs would all look like Buckwheat. All you would see is teeth and eyes.

I was just reading that US is moving to much tighter diesel emmissions overall and is going to require JD and CAT and all the off road diesel engine manfacutures to move to electronic fuel injection to meet the standards.

They let you do the testing (driving?) yourself? The Emission Nazis refuse to let me wind my Diesel Scout up on the rollers. Last time I passed fine (as usual), but scored 0.2 out of 0-20 on the opacity test. Not much HP, but she burns CLEAN! :flipoff2:
