I've been reading some articles on sticking a truck version of the t18 "4x4 version bolted to a dana20 from a J3000 truck" into a Cj
and from what I see it looks like a short shaft kit can be bought.
Can a Shaft from another t18 be used.. and if so which ones? cj only or will a ford truck t18 shaft work? Is ford any cheaper to order a shaft from than those thiefs i've been finding online? "$200.00? wtf??" is it gold plated? dishwasher safe? yeesh. I can get laid AND kissed for that much..hehe
The good news is I have this transmission and transfer case.. but it has a buick bellhousing.
I have this NICE article " EL LinkO (http://www.offroaders.com/info/tech-corner/project-cj7/project-cj7-t-18-rebuild.htm) "
but I don't have a short shaft.. nor info on what will work as an alternative. "i bet some of you have a short shaft though" :flipoff2:

Appreciate any info.. like popeye.. yer screwed.. go find a bush and die behind it.. thats good stuff... well that and real information. like this ford had this shaft and you could steal one from a moving vehicle on the freeway.. :D

Thanks guy's you've been a real help so far.

I assume you are refering to the input shaft. Yes you need one from a Ford T-18. There are 2 different sizes on the inside end of the input, where the syncro goes, so you'll need to have yours out and measured before calling places. I got mine used for $50 which also incuded the short Ford bearing retainer. The tranny will need disassembled to swap it out.

Basically you need a input shaft from a Ford T18 and a bellhousing from any CJ with a T150 or T176 along with an adapter pilot bushing. If the Jtruck had a V8 it has a really long input shaft with a 5" aluminum adapter between the tranny and bellhousing. This is the one you want to replace. If it had a six cylinder you could probably use it as is since you have a CJ6 with plenty of wheelbase.

I just went thru all this too.

I picked up a busted Ford T-18 that I found from calling around to all the junk yards nearby. Found one, picked it up for $75, and canabalized it. Others things you'll need

1.clutch plate to match the 1-1/16" Input shaft from the Ford T-18. $40

2.the Pilot bushing adapter $15-$20

Oh and if you get just an input shaft and not the bearing retainer, you can use the one off the J truck... Just cut it down... or you can buy the spare that I have. actually I have many spare parts if you find you need something.. but no Input shaft.

Yes that can be done, if you have access to a lathe. the diameter where the throwout bearing rides needs turned nearly all the way back. for most people it's easier to just get the right one.

Thanks Guys, I'm filling in the blanks.. I've found some good sites on the process but not much on parts. I've a couple friends checking into old t18's around.

This came from a jtruck with a V6 i'm not sure what that bellhousing is compatable with "231 v6?" I'm planning a 4.0L (jeep) or 5.0(ford) swap.. I guess it will depend on which swap for what Bellhousing I'll need.

the ford or jeep.

Whats the average cost of a drive line lengthening/shortening?
I know there is a guy on forum that does it for a living. just trying to get costs in my head. I can afford to take a little off the back :D

Edit: I think I found a source for a brand new input shaft 75.00 I won't know for sure till I take my old one out and go down to store with it. that doesn't seem bad.. unless it's another 75 for retainer hehe.

Here's the actual trans guys just tossin in for more information.
as you can see it's one long mofo. I'm curious how to measure which shaft I have as I read it there is a 23 spline version in the 6.32 and a different one in the jeeps? maybe I'm fubar on my thoughts.. thanks again for the help.

O Yea.. anyone need a t18 PTO? :D
