An Olds Rocket 455?!?!

Background: i got a line on a delta 88 with an unmodified 455 in it. stock two barrel, which would be replaced with a performer manifold and 4bbl q-jet....no other mods tho...stock manifolds, heads, whanot.

anyways, i want to use this (http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=86598&prmenbr=361) adapter to mate the 455 to my marks adapter to the 4 speed. is this gonna work? the 2bbl only puts out 290 from the factory....and with an intake and carb i should only be at about 325....what do you think? the trans is in good condition, but i dont know! somebody back me up! :D WILL IT WORK!

-Max

here is the adapter:

Sure, but an SM 420 would be nicer when you wheel.

455s are torque monsters.. good choice in my opinion. I think Danny Warden had a 40 powered by a 455 olds.
some quick specs.

420 ft lbs of torque at 2500 rpms and 235 HP ( from desk top dyno) the tourqe curve is still high even in the lower rpms.
I can send you the Dyno file if I can figure how to export it.

4,126 bore and 4.250 stroke...
that stroke is like a 2F stroke.
I think a LC trans would hold up.. I have never seen one go bad really. Keep the LC trans and go with a 4:1 Orion t- case from AA to get those lower gears.

thanks for the info...i have dd and i will try it my self, so dont worry about the file. as for gearing....who needs it? I am a WEB WHEELER :D :flipoff2:

seriously, with torque that low, i am not worried...plus i spend most of my time playing in the mud!!! :p

Are you sure that will be big enough ? Or are you trying to compensate for something else ? :flipoff2:

IMHO a big engine will let you break a lot of stuff if you don't upgrade ($$$)

As with so many of these swaps, the devil is in the details. The big blocks pose some challenges including cooling and finding a way to get the exhaust manifolds or headers to fit relative to accessories such as the steering shaft. I remember Ross Stewart's (of LCAH fame) FJ40 -- he had an exhaust shop build his driver's side header AROUND his steering shaft. That was really far out.

Drive it till it :nuke:
Then you can worry about what to bolt up next. :flipoff2:

there most likely wont be any rock crawling....that is for our other one. mine will be a mudder and a street machine
i cant wait to blow the doors off those ricer punks on the 'ave.
honestly though, i dont forsee a situation where i am jammed in the rocks and need to crank the wheels and reverse out :nuke:

any other opinions?

My buddy Dave has a40 with a built 455 in it.

Got it with a Holley and a race cam.
Really came alive at about 3500 RPM (bad for rocks)
We put a Holley FI on it with a RV cam and it's pretty cool.

He now has Reubens old truck and has oil spaying out of the headers. I think that is bad :D

I want him to put the 455 in there and fut a 2F back in the other and sell it.

Go for it Max
