How did you create a mounting system? It looks like a gutter mount, but I don't see how it clamps on.

I just bolted it right to the cab, also built them so they sit in the gutter as well to help make it stronger.

Nice work... I think something like that w/ an exp. metal floor would be great for my purposes. What size tube is that? And 1 more ?: weight of the rack?

I like the bumpers, too. Did you do those?

Thanks!

Sure I've got more pics of my Coronet:

I do plan on putting in an expanded metal floor, I just got a little anxious and put the rack on anyway with out it. I haven't gathered any of that up yet, I'll likely stop by the metal shop and see if they have any thats good and light.

The rack is made out of 1" square tubing but I'm not sure what thickness it is, it's not very thin. I think it weighs a bit over 100lbs, just guessing. I used a little over 80'.

I did the bumpers too, the front one was my first fabrication project, the rear was my second. I'm going to start making another front bumper with stronger brackets and a better design this weekend. I shouldn't have put the lower bar on like that because it hurts my angle of approach, didn't think about that when I first wipped it up.

my question is how often do you actually put stuff on the top of your cherokee, just looks like alot of extra wieght to me. I like the paint job though my friend is going to do the same on his 4runner. later.

Well, I'm going to have my full size 32" spare, hi-lift jack, shovel and ax there all the time, not really any place else to put those and not be a huge pain.

On top of that, I'm going to be adding jerry cans when I'm out on the trail, likely one fuel one water, chain saw, ice chest, sleeping bags, fishing poles, and likely other things.

A lot of this stuff will fit inside or other places, but now I'm going to have room for backseat passengers and the rest of my supplies that I won't have to dig through a wall to get at.

Some guys don't have much use for racks, but it depends what you use your jeep for.

chain saw? for cutting down trees when they're in your way? and be careful about the fuel jerry can up on top, in case you roll.

Many of the gravel roads in my area are very low traffic, so it's likely you'll expect a downed tree along your travels, not to mention all the roads on our ranches that constantly have trees falling down on them. Also nice to whip up some firewood when camping.

Yeah, the roll factor crossed my mind with the jerry cans on top, but i would more likely get rear ended going down the road than roll over, so I think thats a safer spot than on the rear.

can't you put your spare somewhere else?

I just never understood the 'roof tire' thing. I can't think of any situation where you're better off w/ your <33" spare on your roof. Don't 33's fit in the stock location? It did in my ZJ.

:shaking: nope, I think you can run a 30 or 31" in the stock location, anything more won't fit. Other options would be just laying in the cargo area (takes up lots of room) or running a bumper mount. The bumper mount idea is ok, it blocks a little visibility and gives you a couple extra steps when getting into your hatch. Up on the roof you don't ever have to mess with it until you need it.
