View Full Version : Converting Dana 60 FF to 5 on 5.5?

This weekend, I'm picking up a Dana 60 FF setup with my gear ratio. The only problem is that I run 5 on 5.5, and apparently the hub on the FF is too big for the pilot bore on 5.5 wheels.

I will eventually move to this axle, since it's just, umm, better than the 44 in there now. However, I'm trying to decide whether it's better to convert to 8 lug and buy new alloys, or if I can pull off something to convert the rear to 5 lug (which I would prefer!).

I was thinking about putting some 14b hubs on, and having the snout on the hubs turned down to 4 inches or something for the 5.5 bore, and then having my 60 shaft redrilled to the 14b shaft-to-hub bolt pattern. Once I did that, I'd redrill to 5 on 5.5, and run 1/2 ton rotors and calipers, and weld the thing up for summertime.

What's the feasibility of running 14b hardware on the 60? I don't know that tech at all, so any insight is greatly appreciated. What's the compatibility of the 14b hub to the 60 spindle? When I go to the yard, should I pull the 14b spindle as well? Basically how compatible are these items from a bearing standpoint?

Brakes don't matter since I'll just spark them on anyway.

Thanks in advance
Bob

Yep, 14 bolt outers turned down is how you do it..try seaching around little and you should find several posts regarding this topic...the other option is to cut the ends off and weld on semifloat ends...

I would just go 8 lug. I had a similar decision to make about 6 months back and said screw it...wanted to stay away from any "custom" stuff:D

You can try www.gradysoffroad.com They have hub replacements that are some sort of bolt pattern other than 8 lug.

I never got the chance to call Grady, but I wanted to know if those hubs were for D60's, or if they were 14 bolts. I believe the ones I saw on his site are 6 lug.. which would rule.

Thanks for the help. The search is of little help here because of the 4 digit limit. Gotta love that one.

Anyway, I'll hook up some 14 b hubs and start filling up some holes with the sparkmachine. :)

Cheers
