just wondering whats the difference between the 1/2 and 3/4 ton sterling rear axles. the diff looks the same but what about r&p size and axle spline and diameter? i know that the 3/4 ton is a full floater any other differences?
thanks,
mike
From reading your post I'm guessing your talking about the newer stuff, say '97+. All I can really tell you there is the 1/2t stuff has a ring gear diameter of 9.75 IIRC. I know the housings look the same. . . . . the full floater is now 10.5".
Older stuff, approx pre-97 had a full float and semi-float version of the 10.25, but neither was ever put under a 1/2t to the best of my knowledge. LD F250s usually got the semi-float 10.25 and D44HD TTB up front (although I wouldn't be surprised if Ford mixed and matched w/the D50 TTB and/or full-float rear even on LD trucks).
These "older" full-floaters are 35 spline, 1.5" axle diameter. Great axle, really, and 5.38s are now avail, w/4.88 and 5.13 coming early next year I'm told.
I believe the "older" semi-floaters were also 35spline and 1.5" axle dia, but they're a c-clip design and very few lockers are avail...the only one that comes to mind is the LockRite.
Finally, keep in mind the new stuff will be metric bolt pattern (but will probably have discs), while the older stuff is 8 on 6.5. Also, watch out for the 7 lug stuff used for about one model yr?I think?
Also, Drivetrain Direct told me you can convert from the 10.5 to 10.25 or vice-versa, FWIW.
