does anyone know of a chart, or know the years and models that the torqueflite auto transmission was used in jeep. looking for years 1991 to present. where they used in grand cherokees? cherokees? TJ wranglers? is there an obvious way to detect then from other jeep auto tranny's?

The 999 was used in YJs and TJs only since 91. In some models, Chrysler called it a 32rh, but its the same trans

nodnarb,
Why not install an AW-4 instead of the TF999or TF904. It's a bolt up with the auto B.H. Wide ratio 4 speed auto with that tall overdrive. Used behind the 4.0L in XJ's. Not used in the YJ or TJ because of the short wheel base. What's this going into?

well, its going into a YJ. wanted to use a TF 999 cause its easy to mate to the 4.0. just wanted something sturdy enough to handle some rock crawling. it wont be street legal so i dont need an overdrive. Was thinking about a TF 727, but I really dont know whats involved in getting one into a 4.0l. maybe I'll do a 727 one day when I swap in a 5.7 or 5.9 L. unnecessary right now. is there a kit that can strengthen the 999?

are these newer TF transmissions controled by a seperate computer?

The only thing computer controlled in a 999 or 32rh is the lockup converter. All shift timing and controls are hyd. The best thing you can do to one is a rebuild with quatlity parts, and add a mild shift kit.

A GW 727 would phisically bolt up, but you would have to fab a mount for the 4.0s crank sensor. The 999 has better gear ratios, and is plenty stout for your engine.

Not all 999s are lockups and not all 999s were 2.74 first gear either, I'd go with the 1982 or up 999 just for the lower gears, no 727 or 518 has anything but a 2.45 1st gear. Also it is very easy to convert from lockup to non lockup, the only piece you have to buy is the input shaft itself.

I just picked up a 999 with the lock-up converter out of a 2k TJ. You dont need to get all of the computer crap, just run a toggle switch hot wire set-up to the battery from the lock-up switch on the tranny and wala you have overdrive. Plus it bolts write up at least to the newer YJ's that have the fly wheel sensor.

Is there any special "plumbing" to bolt a TF999 out of a TJ into a TJ that has a AX-15. Is it basically as easy as:
- Remove the ax-15
- Remove clutch
- Remove flywheel
- Install flexpalte
- Bolt up TF999
- Replace rear driveshaft (TF999 is shorter than the AX-15)
- Do the wire for the lockup converter

What about the shifter. It's cable controlled, right ??

Anything else. I'm starting to think about this swap, pretty seriously.
Also, what's a "fair" price for the TF999 (out of a TJ)

Thanks,
Fred

I would also put the bigger oil pan on it and its own seperate cooler and electric fan. These trannies have a tendency to get hot. Also I think the trainy is the exact same length as the AX15?. I will re measure it.

One got ya is that the input shaft on the transfer case is different for the Auto vs AX15. I happened to get the 231 and the tranny together. It is definatley different though.

I got a killer deal on both the tranny and transfer case $160 for both.

Dont forget the drop down cable from the linkage to the auto.

The other thing you might want to consider is a shift kit, other then that good luck.
