about 10 years ago i bought a 5 speed and xcase (vaccum shift)from SOR. bolted right up other than drive shafts. problem is that the transfer case is sticking in 4wd sometime. i have rebuilt the "switch box" twice now with homemade gaskets just does not last long. i have called around and no one has a rebuild kit for this. so what i would like to do is go to a manuel shift. i have seen the talk about this for the 3 and 4 speed but not the 5 speed transfer case, please help!!!
by 5 speed do you mean the H55F from an FJ60? If so i have the same setup with a manual shifter. Id say you can take a look at it but you are a bit far away. Let me knowby early Sun...if this is what you have i can take pics of mine.
Good Luck

Buford-
You have a 62 series or HJ60 transfer case. It is difficult to switch to a manual lever w/o changing the whole case. The parts breakdowns are available in the US for 8/88-1/90 FJ62's at all dealerships in the US (the transfer is same that is bolted to the A440 automatice tranny).

rick, the tranny and transfer came as a unit. look just like the one manefre is offering other than the vaccum assy on it. guess i am just trying to figure out just what i got. did not know of any vaccum shift transfers that were put on a 5 speed. thanks for any help guys!
let me see if i can take some pics tomorrow before i go back to college. I was told these are weak transfer cases, can someone confirm or deny that. If they are weak what can i replace it with. Ultimatly i would like a crawler of about 100:1. I would like to keep the tranny though b/c of overdrive and granny low. DId you swap your tranny? Could it still be the 3speed transfer case with the vacuum shit still attached?
Thanks

The 3 speed case cannot bolt to an H55F.
Scott you have an FJ-62 case and it is not weak, in fact it is the strongest of the Cruiser transfer cases with 2.22:1 Low v 2.3:1 on the 3 speed case.
I know there is a way to make this a manual shift.
I just don't know how :( sorry...

Rick told you exactly what you have. FJ62s and HJ60s used that transfer case. If yours came as a unit it was probably from an HJ60. Also if he says it ain't easy to do a conversion to manual shift... it ain't.
If you want a manual shift I would use the transfer case out of a late FJ60 and mate it to your H55F. I think the switch to 38mm idler shaft was 4/86 in the US, so look for an 86 or 87. The later FJ60 tcases had a 2.27:1 low range. Gears are available for this case to convert it to 3:1 but they are not cheap.

I have both cases side by each ripped apart, my guess is the castings are the same. You would have to machine the face and drill and tap, then purchase the shifter linkage.
This is on my to do projects, change my wifes BJ60 vacume shift to manual.

I converted my old vacume shift t-case to cable shift. It's not hard to do you just need to get a stout puch/pull cable and rout it from the dash to the vacume assy on the t-case, cable clamp the cable housing to a bracket and run the steel cable into the vac cannister, drill hole in round metal diaphram plate, run cable threw plate secure with two cable stops.
When you pull the T handle on dash it engages the front driveline, push and it releases it.
