: What should I do with Keith Strong's rig?
LOPPY 09-27-2001, 09:04 AM So, I have Strong's flapper in my shop. We're getting it ready for the "put up or shut up" weekend in Nov where she's entered as the RPS rig. Since he toasted the front shackle hangers pulling people through the Alligator Pit BACKWARDS! (jackass! but did it though ) We gotta come up with a new hanger system for the front. What'a you guys think?
Option 1. make new hangers, super beefy and sling them back aways to get a super laid over shackle. Should get good flex this way.
Option 2. Go Shackle reversal. My time is limited so this will be a PITA and there's other chit to do to get her ready.
Option...? What?
Again, with two young'ns, work and other obligations, time is short.
HighHooder 09-27-2001, 09:28 AM do the shackle reversal, it doesn't take that much time or effort, and it is a pretty straight forward proceedure. I'm suprised that poser rig isn't s/r'd already.

Until now I didnt really need it. Actually, I am still on the fence about it...I think I am gonna have fender issues with flex with a SR and I dont wanna deal with that...cutting will be a bitch with my Sun Rockers.
Kendo 09-27-2001, 09:36 AM Part it out, it's worth more that way. Since he fawked up the shackle mount, that's your only choice. Sorry Keith.

LOPPY 09-27-2001, 10:07 AM Naw, I think I'll pull the IFS and front clip off a Toyota, we'll run that. Might as well run the Marlin too. I get the ATLAS!

geberhard 09-27-2001, 10:23 AM Keith, no problem, I will take your sun rockers and you will not have to deal with any cutting

You will need the front end too then Cmon...seriously you jerk offs...SR or not????
Kendo 09-27-2001, 10:32 AM My vote is for, I think you'll like it. Have you driven Lop's rig WITH the SR?? You should try one out. You won't notice much difference just driving down the street, other than you don't get that "see-saw" action when you hit a bumpy section of road. You will notice front end dive when you apply the brakes, and when you're wheeling it, it seems to absorb the impact a little better than non-SR.
It's a 50-50 split man, and you will get legitimate arguments in favor of both. Your best bet is to drive one around and see if you like the feel of it.
LOPPY 09-27-2001, 11:41 AM Next time your by dude, take the Lopinator out for a spin. I know you'll like it and want it... it's just a matter of time. I'm running low on that right now...

That may not be such a good idea Loppster...I might not come back with da tree fiddy I can always get another Atlas
Do whatcha gotta do bradda...I just wanna go wheelin again
go with the shackle reversal keith. you saw the difference out at prarie city when you tried to climb my tire. Gary
p.s. what did you think of your rear drive shaft.
Eric Ruhl 09-27-2001, 12:24 PM Sounds like time is short for this, so my $.02 is to hold off on the SR for now and just build some beefy new mounts to get you back on the trail. Shouldn't take you clowns more than a couple hours to do that
Down the road when you have more time to spend on it do the shackle reversal if you still want to but do it right (move axle forward, rotate knuckles/pinion, long travel d-shaft if you don't already have one, etc.). If pitman / tie-rod clearance looks like it will be an issue from moving the axle forward than hang out for a couple weeks and then call Roggy (might be more like a month, he's at ARCA now then on vacation for a bit). I designed some arms that move the tie-rod behind the axle (yup, not just for 60's anymore ) so that clearance issue is history and the drawings go in the mail to him tomorrow. More on that later... for now I'd just get you back on the trail but beef it up so it doesn't break on you again.

LOPPY 09-27-2001, 12:44 PM Thanks ER, again, the voice of reason. I wanted someone to validify what I already knew, and you were all over it. The key here is time...
Put UP is in mid November. I only have scant eve's and a weekend day or two to get it ready. Keith is tied up moving so he cant help too much too.
That's where I'm at, do it right. To do that, and move the axle forward and set it up for clearance and approach angle, I'm basicly going to have to remove and relocate the steering box, winch etc. Also add some structural tubing to the frame ends (will make air tank out of) etc etc... Then there's the chit with the axle to do (pinyon angle etc.) Just too much to do before put up.
By just doing new beefy hangers for now, I thik we can get decent flex and strength (which will all be torched off for the SR later). And we can get the bitch ready to compete.
Gary: The shaft is sweet. He likes the color! Mine is great too, thanks again.
ps.. going to paint his shackles pink!
SweetCJ7 09-27-2001, 01:08 PM The olny reason that I can see not to do it now is what Eric mentioned. Especially the long-travel front shaft.... you don't want to punch out the Atlas the first time out in competion. go with the beef but leave the flipside for later...
$0.02
personally i would just go with the beefy front shackle hangers im not convinced shackle reversals are the way to go just my .02
LOPPY 09-27-2001, 02:46 PM Hey Al! didja pick up springs from my place?
YJTJ- that's the flip side to it. I know some guys that WONT do one. Like it's taboo or something.
ive been very happy without a shackle reversal. flexes great, seems to push the tires over the obstacle instead of chockng the tire like a reversal does. besides i have seen way to many revesals pulled right off the frames and way to many driveshafts pulled right apart from the reversal
66CJdean 09-27-2001, 04:21 PM For me I stayed with shackles in front but this winter it is getting a SR. If time and money are the issue and it sounds like it is then just fix it but when you put a 60 in then change it. With the amount of flex and the length of my springs I have to hit the ARB button alot to help get the tire over the rocks I hit or other wise the tire binds aginst the rock hard and is hell on my springs.
keith does not have to worry about the drive shaft and a shackle reversal. the shaft he has in there will handle being moved forward with no problem and will not drop.
hey loppy i have the templates to do the shackle reversal that are really easy to make. give me a call at work if you are interested 1800-451-7049. gary

Keith-
If you, I mean Lopp does the S/R for you, you WILL have issue with your rockers! I have cut all the way to the firewall and I think those Suns extend beyond that.
NE-RokToy 09-27-2001, 07:09 PM just fix it for now, but down lay the shackle down that will make the front super soft and unstable. i saw a huge differance by just changing the shackle angle and now its much firmer. I think 15-20* angle is good with a max of 30*
