I'm wondering who sells the family top or safari top for fj40's. The only one i can find is the one from spectre but it has 2 so called sun roofs. I'm looking for just one solid piece. Or do i need to go to a shop that does interior workand have onr made?

I have heard people say that having a custom one made is not that expensive vs buying a stock one. I would check with a local upholstery shop. I know every time I get something made I am pleasantly suprised by how reasonable it is.

Plus if you get one made, it'll be the way you want it.

I bought one from www.tpi4x4.com and it was fine.

I HATED the type channel on the front....it is the round type that you are supposed to be able to thread in from the side.

It held up fine, but i fawked the front up pretty bad trying to make it fit in the channel.

I ended up loping the front of the top off and putting brass grommets on so I could attach it with ZIP ties.

Thanks guys for your help. Nolen that is exactly what i'm looking for. As for the one from Spectre they want $130.00 but it has the so called sun roofs that i dont want. As for the one you said from TPI at 69.00 well worth the price. Thanks again:)

Next time you're close to the coast find a place that makes tops/awnings for boats, they can make anything you need and the prices for something that small would be pretty reasonable. Besides, they have access to really hardy materials (stainless steel grommets, UV-resistant stitching, rot-resistant vanvas/vynil, etc...). A buddy of mine had a custom bikini top made to fit his family-style roll cage and not only did it turn out great, it's held up to a lot of abuse in the last couple of years.

Depending on whether you want vynil or a waterproof canvas, look into a material called Sunbrella(TM), it's a hi-tech breathable, sun and mildew resistant material used to make boat covers and patio awnings that comes in about 30 different colors and is available in bulk (for reasonable prices) from boat supply stores.

Finally, I've seen a handful of Cruisers (most of them in Northern CA) that had custom bikini tops that were permanently mounted to the rollcage, some with snaps and some with threaded bungee. I really like the idea for a wheeling truck because you can put the windshield down or take it off without sacrificing the top, and some of these guys even run the hardtop in the winter without taking the bikini off. It won't protect you from the rain as good as the traditional mounting, but depending on your location and climate, it may be worth looking into.
