: Auxilary Air Valve

Does anyone know how to check and or adjust the auxilary air valves that were used on the pre '89 22RE's ?

I've checked the OHM resistance on the electrical connection for the bi-metal actuator, and it seems fine. But the valve does not seem to be opening properly because the motor will not idle up when 'cold'.

I have checked and verified the CSI time switch, thermal sensor (located next to it), and the CS Injector.

Thanks for any help on this issue :D

The valve is probably stuck in the "closed" position. You either need to clean it out or replace it. Better yet, pick up a newer style upper plenum and throttle body and rid yourself of that stupid contraption.

I'm on my second one already (both used of course). Whenever I go to remove them they are already in the 'closed' position. I was hoping there was a way to test them to see if they are actually opening up at all. I've tried the 'pinch-the-hose' test and it of course doesn't affect the idle at all.....beacuse the air valve is obviously not working.

I notice there is a small stud on the back side of the air valve body. Was wondering how this affects the operation of the air valve itself ???

Sounds like both of your valves are bad.

As for as the stud, I remember "hearing" that the pre '89 models were idle adjustable, maybe that is what it is for.

Sorry I can't be more help, but I am only aquainted with the '89 model.

They're adjustable for the high idle speed, but that should never have to be touched. Usually they just fill with the same crap you find built up in the upper plenum and get stuck. I think I still have a couple of them around, one I know is bad but the other I bought brand new and wasn't on there long before I swapped motors so it should still be good. Let me know if you're interested and I'll see if I can dig it up. That is if you can't get your old ones working properly...

Both the aux valves I've tried were from the local 'wrecking-yard'. So I don't doubt the posibility they were bad. I did take both apart to clean them up, and neither one seemed to be in too bad of shape.

SHANE: If you are serious about offering up that extra Aux Valve I would be most appreciative. :D

If I can find it. I'll look around tonight and let you know via email.
