I want to connect 2 computers through the netwrk cards, My understanding is that I need a cat 5 wire with a pair of wires switched. My friend has the punch down tool, so what do i need to do? Also what is this wire called so I can search ebay and see if I can just buy it cheap enough so it isnt worth the trouble to make?

You need a crossover cable. (http://www.makeitsimple.com/how-to/dyi_crossover.htm)

Tell your friend that he can put the first connectors wires in any order he wants to (although he should follow industry guidelines for color pattern), but that on the other side he needs to reverse the positions of wire numbers 1 & 3 and wire numbers 2 & 6.

thankyou, other thing is im thnking that I can plug the first machine into my internet connection and then my second into a second network card on that machine and use a shared internet connection, basically using the file sever as a router. Any problems with this?

If you gonna make a cable do it right. wire one side T-568A and the other T-586B.

Looking from the back of the RJ45 connector or directly at the wallplate, here is the pinout

T-568A
1) w/green
2) green
3) w/orange
4) blue
5) w/blue
6) orange
7) w/brown
8) brown

T-568B
1) w/orange
2) orange
3) w/green
4) blue
5) w/blue
6) green
7) w/brown
8) brown

If he's going to do it right, he should just go to homeless depot and buy a factory made Cat5e for $10.

If he's just having a friend make one for his own use, he could wire it correctly but it really doesn't matter as long as the 1&3 and 2&6 wires are crossed.
