Plasma cutter
Torch
15" drill press

I made my press powered... you can fear this... it's got a 21" liftkit (so I can put long axleshafts in it), two 5" bore hydro cylinders, a directional control, and it runs off the 12V hydro pump on my bender... 30T, but only 'cause I didn't get a very big hydro pump. Used to be a 20T press.

Well, my tool collection really depends on where Im doing the work on my rig. If its at my apt, all Ive got is a 4" angle grinder and tons of handtools/sockets...... So bolt on stuff and minor mods can happen in my apt. If Im doing major work, I'll go to my dads auto repair, and get full use of lifts (he's got 3, so I just pick one) a parts washer, all the air tools I could think of, a hydraulic bender, that I have yet to learn how to use, a miller 220V welder that I don't know how to use, a torch, that I DO know how to use, and a plasma cutter.

Yup. But it's funny what kinda rumors get floated around here...

My 40T tube bender is a "mildly" (yeah, right) modified JD2 Model 3. Not a 4 (4 didn't even exist when I bought my 3--in fact, the 3 was a new model when I got mine!).

The rumor that it's for sale... is just that. A rumor. It's not.

And I did break it a year or so ago... bending 1.75 0.500. Fixed it, and it's happy now.

My buddy is possibly looking to sell his lathe. Classic old iron like what you like. I "think" it is American brand, not sure.
He was talking some where in the thousand dollar neighborhood.

As far as the tool list,
At least $30,000 in Snap On, Matco, and Mac, with the nice Matco 9525 tool box setup, with complete 1/4" through 3/4" drive sets (sockets up to 4").
Snap-On 220 welder with remote wire feed box with 50 ft lead.
Both large and small torch kits.
Compressors.
Portable boring bar.
Various grinders, both hand held and bench mounted.
Cherry pickers, engine stands, tranny jacks,
we have a very well set up shop.

wish list is a bridgeport, and a CNC table for my plasma. a friend of mine is working out the bugs on the drives and controller using cheap parts, and I hope to be able to buy a setup from him in the foreseeable future, for a lot less than the commercial setups. I'd like a larger lathe, and actually have it set up. for now, I have friends that own machine shops that cut me decent deals on machining projects, and I can get all my materials at cost + tax from where I work.

Overall, I have a pretty decent hobby set up. far from some of the professional grade stuff a lot of you guys have at home, but I'm trying.... :D

I've got list that takes care of me... (but could always be better)

- Clark benchtop 1/2HP drill press
- Mikwakee hand drill (better and stonger than the Clark)
- Craftsman Professional 4.5" angle grinder ($25 on sale - out of the model listed in the ad, so it this $80 unit was subbed)
- most regular hand tools needed to work on the rig
- 6.5 HP compressor along with air tool (need stronger impact)
- Craftsman 10" miter saw converted to my chop saw
- 2 (not just one) regular hack saws
- 2 (not just one) 3lb mini-sledge hammers
- a 110v Cambell welder (used to do all my work with it)
- too many jackstands (various sizes 12 or 14 I think)
- some large floor jack from Sam's (works great)
- 60" Hi-lift jack (come on - all of us used that in the shop)
- Craftsman low end sawsaw
- ThermoDynamics Custmaster 50 (Plasma Cutter)

But also on long term loan have been:

- ESOB Migmaster 251 continuous duty industrial welder
- Torch setup
- various friends for free labor

On the purchase list (soon) are:

- JD 2 or Protools bender with 1.5" die
- stronger pneumatic impact wrench
- Hobart or Miller 175 welder (or equiv.) (used is fine with me)
- 1 hp upright drill press (looking for something used)
- cold saw
- belt sander
- parts washer

In the garage but rarely used (haven't found much use for it on my 4x4):

Top of the line old school, do everything table saw that I store for my father-in-law.

Before, I bought the sawzall, borrowed the torch, purchased (with a few friends) the plasma cutter, and borrowed that real welder, it was amazing what I could do with a 110 welder and cut off blades for the grinder. Of course, I wasn't welding 3/8" brackets and installing Rockwell axles back then either!

I like making my own shop equipment as much as using it.
What I have built so far:
Hydraulic tubing bender w 180* ability using Hossfield dies
Tracer style flame cutting machine
8" plate brake
48" sheet metal brake
24" bead roller
1x42" belt grinder

what I bought.

Snap On 230 amp industrial welding power source with MIG and TIG.

Oxy-actealyne torches (rose buds rule, they will clear out your
garage of spectators in a hurry)

30" sheet metal shear, finger brake and slip roller combo.

drill press

upright/cutoff convertable band saw

14" chop saw

William Low Buck shear type notcher

Harbor freight hole saw notcher

Misc angle and die grinders.

I have the usual 20K in Snap-On hand and air tools.

What I want:

My new Iron worker is on the way :)

I want a lathe in the worst way.
After using a Mitler Bros. notcher,I decided that I would like notch my tubing in the lathe by putting a v-blocked drill press vice on the tool holder and using a mill bit in the chuck.

Bridgeport Mill with turret head, 2 axis CNC power feed and all the cool layout and indexing toys.

Yep, with the advent of free camera's and hard drives so cheap it is silly to not have any kind of surveilance system along with the guns and baseball bats. And if you think I am gonna come out with my baseball bat instead of my gun, think again.

They publish a lot of OLD, out of print technical stuff like old south bend lathe books, and also a very good series on home built tools by a guy named Dave Gingery. good reading, and the books aren't too expensive.

If you get a chance why don't you post a pic of what "mild" mods you did to it.

You think it could bend anything bigger or is that max?? Not that you are bending pussy tube or anything. Also how many degrees can you bend it?

There's a couple pics of the bender somewhere on my site, I'll go for a wander and see what I can find.

I can bend 2" 0.250 DOM about as far as I want, from memory... I don't try often.
1.75 0.500 DOM, I can go as far as I want now too.
1.5, I've never tried more than 0.500, but I suspect it'll bend as thick a wall in 1.5 as I can physically get (solid?).

The bender will bend to 100-110 (depending on diameter) degrees in one shot; I've never seen dies that'll go farther than 180 degrees.

Problem now is, the bender frame design doesn't allow for bigger than 2" tube--so if I want to bend something bigger, I have to start over from scratch.

Thanks for the info scott. I wanted to bend some 2" .500 wall awhile back and started trying to find a bender that could do it but no one knew of anybody that could do it so when I heard you were doing it on a JD2 I figured it couldn't be true but now I know you can if you get serious enough about it. Did you built your own dies or just the frame?

Your completely right. I didn't really thing of thigs as being unreplaceable. For instance, if my grandfather would have bought me any of the items I have in my garage, I'd feel the same. I'm still trying to figure out if you guys are serious or if you're messing with me... but hey, I've never been one to restrict the ammo used to taunt me.

A friend of mine used to work in steel erection (yeah, Beavis, I really did just say....) and in trade for a bunch of work on his stock-car, I got a bunch of "bridge iron" which I used to build the brake and the "import destroyer" rear bumper that was on my first tow rig.

The brake is now damaged, but it would bend 42" wide 1/8" steel, around 30" wide 3/16", or 20" wide 1/4". Not sure about anything thicker than that.

The bender frame and dies are more-or-less off-the-shelf JD2 stuff, with gusseting and similar, but they're basically stock. Obviously, the bracketry and custom can mount are... well... custom. The 55-gallon drum is on casters (as are most of my heavy tools) so I can roll them around to different places in the shop.

The bender has a 12V hydro pump on it, and a deep-cycle battery with a trickle charger... and hydro quick-connects to hook it to the press, which is also on casters, for mobility.

Speaking of the press... fear this! :)

1965 Index Mill 9x42 w/ power feeds. Plan is a CNC retro fit

1925 Gossinger Drill Press. Flat leather belt, nice and slow for drilling 1" holes in steel. Motor made by Dayton Electric Co. (Hint... Delco!)

1970's 250Amp Hobart TIG welder.
(nuttin like 200Amp 100% duty cycle ratings!!!)

Best Item:
Snap On 3/8" drive rachet... my Dad bought it in 1938 when working as an apprentice. Too cool for words, and nice addition to the tool box!

That press is evil looking. How did you make the part that bends the steel Scott? Sorry for the dumb questions. I want something like this for sure. I would much rather make something like that myself instead of buying one. I am thinking it would be great for breaking up skids and fenders and stuff.

Scott,

I am dead serious. You said it man "Necessity is the mother of invention... economy is the cruel stepmother of it." Those machines you built are not 10 million dollar machines but they get the job done. We sometimes forget about accomplishing the job at hand and get wrapped up in having the latest and greatest new thing.

Scott@Rockstomper
06-13-2003, 12:05 PM
The press doesn't just look evil, it is evil. :) OSHA would have a field day in my place--I've got power tools whose guards were removed prior to even getting home. Good thing I'm not endangering anybody but myself. :)

'k, making a brake...

You more or less need two main pieces, the blade top, and the bed.

The bed kinda looks like an M... I made it out of two piceces of 3x3 angle, with the points up. Two A's next to each other.

The blade top, I made from 1/4x4 or thereabouts, it looks like the upright of a T, sticking down from the slider on the press that the jack (or in my press' case, the cylinders) sit on top of. It goes right into the middle of the "M" on the bottom.

Stick a piece of plate between, and push real hard, and it bends around the blade.

Basically, you've gotta know the ins-n-outs of how a press is made, and to build a brake, you're making a press, but instead of a post and a flat bed, you're using a blade and an "M" bed.

Kinda sorta make sense?

Guys PLEASE be carefull listing all these high price items on the net. It is not just us honest folks reading this stuf. Pretty much if you have ever listed you addt then the whole world knows were you and all these tools are. Lock you tools and your shop. I remember this happening to snowtrooper or someone up in placerville or forest hill a few years ago.

So as for me i got:
14" chops saw
grinder
most alll hand tools (craftsman)
delta multi speed drill press
bench grinder
mig welder

wish-
press
plasma
lift

exactly, i got a plasma cutter jacked when i conversed with a guy about borrowing it, alot of people already knew where i lived but that gave the theifs knowladge that it would out of the garage, then when i was in basic training and people knew i was really far away, a jackass i went to HS with that used to be on the board broke into our house and our garage and tokk a bunch of toy parts out of my rig that was stored behind the garage.

just be careful who knows what, even your BEST FRIENDS CAN HAVE A FALLING OUT WITH YOU AND THEN GET GREEDY
