: Recommended cell phone brand?
Im stuck with AT&T for a year, and im using this cell phone as a business phone while im starting out and it sucks. Its definately not good talking to a customer and having the phone constantly cut in and out, it never completes a call, its choppy sounding all the time, its hard to hear even when the thing is working right. The junk im using now is a Panasonic Versio eb-tx320 (http://www.panasonic.com/pcsc/ptsc/versio.asp)
So basically what phone would you recommend that will work with AT&T that is a decent phone and doesnt cost a kidney or my first born? At most $200 or so.
sceep 06-12-2003, 01:23 PM my kyocera phone seems great.
Entropy 06-12-2003, 01:24 PM AT&T Sucks.
BTW - you can't be stuck in a contract if their service is sub-par. If you are getting poor signal or something, just say: "My contract is for you to provide me with phone service. You are not providing it consistently and you have voided our contract as a result."
Motorola makes crappy phones in comparison to Samsung or Sanyo in my opinion. I have a motorola now and both a Samsung and Sanyo at home - build quality is night and day different. Not only that - but the Samsung I have was 180 bucks and the Motorola I have was 300 dollars. The Motorola is nice - but it just feels cheap in comparison.
Pretty much all the recievers are made by Qualcomm anyway.
TIE1ON 06-12-2003, 01:25 PM I've had 3 Nokias and I'll always have a Nokia!!
Franklin 06-12-2003, 01:29 PM My Samsung spent 3 hours in cooler of water and ice. Still works fine except the 6 sticks.
I've only had one phone that lasted over a year, that was a motorolla. One of the old startacs. Anything made anymore seems to be designed to break within a year. My wifes samsung has been good also.. but it's bout the same age as the startac was
Grim Reaper 06-12-2003, 01:32 PM Nokia.
I run a repair shop for Cingular that is cerified for Nokia, Motorola, Ericsson. Overall the Nokia's out perform anything else we sell.
DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT MOTOROLA!...they are crap and the V60ti has a serious flaw that Motorola has no intention of repairing. THey will have a new version out in July.
I didn't even know Pannasonnic made phones anymore. They sucked 10 years ago.
As for you service...It may improve in the very near future. At&t and Cingular have signed some roaming agreements in the past few month. The main purpose it to share the cost of building out rural area's. The side gain is we will be hanging antennas for both compaines on the towers in many locations. They are still sorting stuff out so it may be a while.
ChevyGal 06-12-2003, 01:35 PM Avoid Ericsson.... I have one now, it sucks. I hope to get my new phone today. It's a Sony, so I will soon see how it works.... oh yeah I have AT&T too.... around here, it's clear on the right phone (like my moms), but on mine it's like being in a cave....
Wow, that Kyocera flip phone thing is $700, that would be nice, but a little out of my range.
Entropy which model Samsung are you using?
Have yall ever tried those antenna booster things that go under the battery?

I have a friend that swears by them... and I have had one that he gave me - it did seem to work. Sounds like mumbo jumbo to me though. Edit: Talking about the antenna thingy.
Oh, I meant Sanyo... I have a Sanyo SCP-4500 at home that has been a great phone. Fourbanger has the SCP-4900 (the newer version) and it is the color one with all the bells and whistles. He may chime in with his thoughts on it - but I am pretty sure he likes it.
I have the Nextel (Motorola) I95Cl now. Cool phone - but I am just used to a better build quality I guess.
Edit: I do like the Samsung phones as well and think they have a solid build quality as well.

no gripes about my Samsung either: It's been swimmin on more than one occasion by accident.
dropped in mud puddles.
had soda dumped on it.
dropped and has come totally apart more than once.
survived me getting ran over early this spring, got only road rash that time
it still works great my wife is trying to get me to get a new one but why this one has been more than good to me.
She works for Sprint and is the one who works on the phones we fawk up she has yet to figure out how mine still works:D
Nextel is in the future, I had Nextel for a few years as my old company phone.
I like the scp 4900, my buddy has one and it seems to work great, but will it work with AT&T? Says sprint on it

I know Sanyo has phones for Sprint, Verison, and one other one... TMobile maybe?
AT&T I am not sure. Everyone I know that had AT&T dropped them for someone else so I don't keep track of them much (AT&T doesn't have the greatest coverage around here).

Ditto here. My housemate just got a new phone and service. He had Cingular :barf: and couldn't get a signal in this house in Sacramento. He switched to AT&T because that is what I have and seem to get a decent signal. However he got a Motorola phone whereas I have the Nokia. We can stand right next to each other and while I have a signal, he has almost none!!!

Interesting. I have a Motorola v120 for 6 - 7 months now and no
problems and no dropped calls. Works for me. BTW, my provider is AT&T.

I have done the same thing with the same type of phone and the same service. Many things affect signal: Wireless Networks, Microwaves, Rampaging Magic, etc...
Your friend could have been standing right in the middle of a vortex of signal bending spooky waves and you wouldn't have been able to tell.
Different phones react to those signals in different ways... she may have a better signal somewhere else. Some phones just don't get a good signal ever, because of bad components, out of adjustment internals, the little green gremlin inside is hungry...
"Most" phones use Qualcomm internals anyway.

THe V120 actully does ok. It's the V60i and V60ti that have issues.

Alright, you know how to get the "Nextel" off of my screen?
I have hacked my phone (i95cl) and can add Wallpapers and Ringtones with the data cable and I can change the startup screens and what is says on the outside lid.
No one has figured out the removing the "Nextel" from the main screen yet and they say you have to have a SIM card writer or a way to change it in the phone itself...

Uhhhh....No they don't
I can't remeber the last time I have opend a Nokia, Motorola or a Ericsson and seen that (but motorola makes one of the chips in some Nokia's)
Joe_W 06-12-2003, 02:56 PM The only Motorolas ever worth a damn were the old Star-Tecs..loved that phone. Have a cheap (free) Nokia now and like it a lot, had Nokia's before the Star Tac and except for one model I liked em so I stick with Nokia

Hey bro you get deals on everything, find me a good phone. I do like that computer one you had, Kris said you broke it or something though. Give me a call this weekend, maybe we can all go out and do something.
Glenn 06-12-2003, 03:04 PM I've had my Nokia 6160 for a couple years now and it's never let me down. I also have AT&T and I've been able to get good service just about everywhere I go. Even from the top of Walker Hill on the Con. I upgraded the battery from the 900mhz unit that comes with it, to a whopping '3800' mhz  battery. It's a tad bulky but worth it for 40 days standby and 9 - 14 hours talktime. I just charge it whenever I feel like topping it off. :D:D:D
Think about me the next time your battery goes dead and you find you left the charger at home... :flipoff2::D:D

Nokia pays Qualcomm royalties for the chips it makes using the CDMA technology developed by Qualcomm. :)
70~K5 06-12-2003, 04:52 PM Does anyone use the Motorola T720. I have AT&T and need a new phone as my old Nokia 6160 has seen better days. I like the fact that I don't need to put my reading glasses on to read the T720's screen like I have to for most the other phones on the market.

Ahhhhhhh there is the confusion. I deal with TDMA not CDMA. I am begining to deal with GSM.

That's part of the IRDB (inteligent Roaming Data Base) load. It's on the SIM and even if you changed it it would probably change back before long. That info gets updated pretty often as roaming agreements change.
Ever thought about getting a job with a carrier? That's no small feat to hack a phone without propritory software and service hardware from the manufacture. Nokia is so protective of that stuff that I had to sign all sorts of legal documents to get it. Ericsson Web bases all the software stuff and the passkey device has to be registered with them before it will work. Same with Motorola.
ForestCam 06-12-2003, 07:34 PM Hey Grim Reaper, what's the flaw in the V60? I've got two and when the 105 day old battery (90 day war. ) puked last week the T-Mobile service gal eluded to a problem with them but wouldn't elaborate.

I bought a data cable for my old Nokia on ebay and downloaded several software programs to change ringtones and screensavers. Were't too awfully difficult.:D
Belly Dragger 06-12-2003, 08:19 PM LG, Nokia, Samsung
Those are the ones I sell the most of. Sanyo's right behind with Motorola bringing up the rear.
As far as reception my Motorola bag phone works head and shoulders over any of the 500mw phones out now. Sometimes I wished I never switched to digital signal.
Cell service is greatly variable depending on way too many factors to say one phone gets better reception than another unless you are comparing each phone standing side by side and using the same carrier/provider. I've even seen some people who effect cell reception in negative ways. For the most part a phone is a phone and they all work and perform the same.
allusee 06-12-2003, 08:34 PM Nokia is a great brand, no problems..
4runner 06-12-2003, 08:38 PM Get the Sony/Ericson T62U...it is $149 and kicks ass...works TDMA, CDMA, GAIT, GSM....net compatible, plugs into your puter, external antenna jack, color screen, joystick, polyphonic ringtones, lithium ion battery....1 piece, no antenna sticking out to break off...
Toy 4Runner Man 06-12-2003, 08:53 PM Right now the provider I use (EDGE) is 40% owned by AT&T, and I have used Nokia, Motorola, and Panasonic. The Panasonic Duramax is an awesome phone! I dropped, threw, and beat the living daylights out of it, and it never missed a beat. The reception was good, and the features were better than average. I hate the Nokia brand! They are fragile, reception is eratic, depending on which serries you have there are some nice features, and U can get parts anywhere. The Motorola V60t I currently have. It is small, has lots of features, the antenna is fragile(breaks off the circut board), I love the flip. The Startacs are good little phones too, and they are still out there for TDMA systems, our store still gets them from time to time to sell.
In our shop, everybody uses the V60. They just seem to be the best overall phone out there. We have tested the Nokia 5100's, 6100's, 3300's, 7100's, and 8?00's. Panasonic Allure, promax, duramax, plus one of the older series. Erikson, gave up on them. Motorola V60, V120, and acouple others I don't recall the series.
Oh, FYI, AT&T and Motorola have an aggrement to repair phones for free. We send them out all the time to get repaired.

That part is easy.
We are talking about hacking sim cards to change the Logo on the screen.
If you know a little hex - you don't even need all those fancy programs.
If you go to IdenInsider.com - they have pretty much everything you need to do anything you need to do - except change or remove the Nextel logo.
FYRMAN 06-13-2003, 12:20 AM I used to use Ericsson. Got tired of them and went to a Nokia for all of 10 months. Those phones were all $50-$100 phones. I just bought a V60i and absolutely love it. I would go back to the Ericsson if they put out a phone that I liked, but will never go back to Nokia. After spending a little bit more money for the Motorola, I'll never spend less than $200 on a phone ever again. The difference for me was night and day. I have noticed that the signal strength has improved on every phone I stepped up to. From the Ericsson to the Nokia to the Motorola. I get the very best reception and clarity with the Motorola.
The phone that I originally went to get has been discontinued. I wanted the Panasonic Duramax. My brother had his for two years. It was thrown against walls, dropped from big distances onto concrete, dropped in water, ran over by his F350... It finally took one of the drive tires on a loaded Freightliner to kill it. Even then, all it did was crack the screen. He could still make and recieve calls, but he couldn't see anything on the screen.
