Six-pac: $3.95
Pads: $18.95
Where's your buddies? :D
FourBanger 06-12-2003, 08:23 PM Amanda, what kind of car? I can probably talk you through a brake pad change on it, if you know a wrench from a screwdriver. :flipoff2:
If your rotors are screwed, though, some cars you need to take the hub apart to change rotors.
Others, the rotor just slides off when you take off the wheel and brake caliper.
ForestCam 06-12-2003, 08:23 PM You're just low on brake oil, add some and the noise will go away.:D

You need to jack that shit and scan em or send em to me!! HAHAHAHA
DT, bow chika bow bow. :D
You pay for the plane ticket, provide the tools, and I'll do the labor and maybe buy the parts hehehe
It is pretty simple...i've had to do a brake change on a friends 80's toy corolla in a parking lot because he wore the caliper pistons into the rotors and had no brakes left at all literally...
Shouldn't be more than an hour worth of work really.
Motornoggin 06-12-2003, 08:49 PM I can almost guarantee, you need rotors. Plan on it. They should just slide off. It's eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeasy.
FourBanger 06-12-2003, 08:54 PM Straight off Autozone's website:

ALBANY MKD727 LLT $19.99
BRAKE ROTOR - FRONT for a
1997 CHEVROLET MALIBU

While I don't have a Malibu, if you have a basic set of tools and a large C-clamp, you can change your own brakes.

Bad idea. I saw a set of albanies fail after 200 miles, and took both rotor out too. Antozone payed to fix it, but he was still out labor. I prefer raybestous, which is though kragen. Anywhere from $23 to 55, depending on what you get.

If that were a common occurance - I don't think Albany would stay in business very long.
Besides, Performance Friction (also available from AutoZone) are the best. :p

True, but I've heard bad things from other's, and it seems to be more frequent than some of the other brands. Personally, I don't truct autozone for inportant stuff, unless it's a good name brand that I know. When you think about it, there has to be a reason it's cheap, and given that it's most leikly not in profit, shipping, or facilities, given the comminality of most parts chains, it would pretty much have to be in manufacturing, which indicates either cheap parts, cheap labor, or cheap materials. Either way, I'll pay a bit extra for somthing that's a bit better. Not much, mind you, but a bit.

TexasBlake 06-13-2003, 01:10 AM why did you break your brakes?
FourBanger 06-13-2003, 01:37 AM Ugh. Hope the rotors are okay. I popped the center cap off someone's Malibu in the parking lot at work, and you need to take the hub apart to change rotors.
I will never understand WTF the engineers were thinking when they designed this.
And Jaluhn, I don't normally get the cheapest brake stuff either, but if money were no object, don't you think she'd have gotten them fixed by Midas or Car-X?
I've used the Albany pads before, they're okay. Just don't take them to a road track and expect them to stay together.
paniolo 06-13-2003, 08:25 AM Some grooves in the rotors just give the pads more surface area to grab on to, right?:flipoff2:

Quite true. That's why I said as long as it's resonable diffenert. The albanies were right abour 20, I think, I I wound a set of raybestous pads for 23. I don't think the extra $3 is going to be a major issue.

The more you drive the more expensive it gets.
Thought your dad builds hot rods?
You can do a pretty darn good brake job for under $100 (not counting needing new rotors if you can't turn them because you have been driving on worn out brakes too long).
You have a Camera, if you got tools I'm sure the PBB can talk you though a brake job.

The rotors just slide off.. but you gotta have a big-ass tor-x to get the caliper bracket off first.. no big deal but i usually break one or two of them per side (the tool, not the bolt)..
So, take caliper off bracket, take bracket off knuckle, swap rotors (might need BFH to brake the rust..) put braket back on, push caliper piston back in, put caliper (and new pads) back on, and your done.. There hasn't been a FWD chevy made that you have to undo the bearings (they're unitized anyways) to get the rotor off..

False Statement.
You have to split the hub to remove the rotor from a Chevy/Geo Sprint.
The username fits.
Renee 06-13-2003, 11:06 AM My question here is...I thought you posed off me like 2 months ago and bought a REAL car??? By the way, I'll take some pics of my beauty tonight so you can finally see it.:flipoff2:

Ah, well, it sure looked like the kind you have to take apart at 1am in a pretty dark parking lot. :flipoff2:
I don't know WTF they were thinking with the Torx bolts, either.
Amanda G 06-14-2003, 09:42 PM Okay guys, first time on the BB since thursday...
