Hi everyone,
i'm looking into getting a stock jeep wrangler from 93-97 and i was wondering what should i look for like common problems and etc. also when did jeep start coming out with EFI motors? this jeep wouldnt be use to wheel too hard, its going to be used mainly as a daily driver so i need something reliable.
i did do a search, but didnt really find what i was looking for.

thanks for your replies.

All I can tell you is I got a 94 yj 2.5 liter with 160,000 miles on it and the biggest problem I've had with it is having to replace the cam shaft sensor. $10 part. There basic vehicles, easy to turn into rock crawlers the two biggest downfall of this year is the d35 and the dico d30.

EFI I believe was available from 90 on, at least with the 4.0L (the six banger). The 4.0L H.O. came out in 91. Before you buy the vehicle have a compression check done on the engine. Look for dirt on the top side of the transmission crossmember/skidplate, as well as dents in the undercarriage. IF they are there chances are it has been taken off-road, which MAY mean the vehicle was beat on. The manual transmissions behind the 4.0L & H.O. are a bit on the weak side, however if you don't abuse them they should hold up. Look for signs of oil splatter on the body at the rear of the transfercase, as well as oil or major dirt build up on the diffrential covers, as well as oil splatter on the underside of the hood.

Since this will be your girlfriends jeep I would recommend looking into a TJ. I only say this because a lot of people of the fairer sex don't like the way the YJ rides. The stereo's and A/C are better on a TJ than a YJ as well. There are some good deals out there on 97ish 4 banger TJ's, you just have to keep your eyes open, I've seen them for around $7,000.

You say your lookin for a 93-97 wrangler so I have to ask do you care if its a TJ (round headlights, coils and option of d44 rear) or a YJ (square headlights, leafs and no D44 option) because the YJ was made from 87-95 and the TJ was made from 97-presant (yes there is no such thing as a 96 Wrangler)

wow thanks. this is alot of good info. i always wondering why i cant find any 96 wranglers lol.

i actually perfer the newer TJ for its softer ride, but money wise the newer TJ's I-6 w/ auto are kinda pricey. i thought the rear D44 started in 99 behind I-6 motors only. the 97-98 reused the d35
what you guys think about the 4 cylinder motors with an auto trans...gutless or just enough to keep a person happy?

thanks

probablly gonna be pretty gutless. To see for yourself go take a test drive of a new one at a dealer. ;) Your girlfriend may be happy with the 4 bangers power. A YJ 4 banger/auto combo is gonna be rare to non-existant, I've never seen one anyway. I know of a few guys with the manual tranny with the 4 banger that keep their d35's together with 33" tires and a locker. The trick is is to not be a throttle jockey.

my YJ with a I-6, NV4500 tranny, and 3.07 gears got about 21 MPG highway with 31" tires. with the stock 28" tires I got about 20 MPG. With my 33" tires I get about 17-18 MPG. Just thought I'd share that with ya :flipoff2:

4 bangers were FI from the introduction of the wrangler in 87. The I-6 were FI starting in '90. But as with jeep tradtion, you may get an 89 with Fi or an 90 with a carb.

But honesly you're best bet for te question it sounds like you'll have is over at JU.

the '98 Sahara had a D-44 for whoever posted that D-44's weren't put in until '99.

If you're gonna use it for DD then got for a '97 TJ. Much smoother ride and quieter. There were several changes to make it more "comfortable".
But then again, if you're buying a jeep and planning on barely driving it off road, then don't buy a jeep!!!

The D-44 in the wrangler was only an option, It never came standard on a wrangler till the rubicon.

Actually he did post his question on the correct forum. His question is perfectly suited for where he posted it. I think you might be in the wrong forum considering you didn't notice the *no bashing* rule of the forum. :roxy:
