i guess ill start this post off here instead of the toy forum, but anyway, i just picked up a free msd 6a from a friend that was selling his car and it wasnt going to do anygood in his new vehicle, so he said if i wanted it held take it out of his old car.
well anyway im trying to figure out what i need to do to get this in my 4-runner with the 3vze (its a 1990)... ive seen the wiring diagrams on the msd site and searched a few forums but im not having much luck finding answers. i figure there has got to be someone on here who has put one in a v6 yota that remembers what they had to do.
- it seems that i need some kind of other part to make this work like a relay or something, is there anything else?
- i know where all the wires go except the white one or the green/purple one that activate the msd (which one do i use for this application?)
all the diagrams on the msd site just dont seem to help for the toyota trucks.

Just call MSD's tech line. They should steer you in the right direction.

The purple and green wires are for the MSD magnetic pick up, the white wire is for a points ignition or can be wired to output signal of an electronic ignition.

I put one of these on my rig a while back. Same motor as you.
I have the Offroad ignition 6AL I think.. with Blaster SS coil. I went with thicker plug wires and brass contacts on as many things as I could. Couldn't find a rotor cap with brass contacts though.
I am thouroghly unimpressed with this thing. Sorry I spent the money and crowded up my engine compartment. At least you got yours free though.
In my case there is no difference in percieved performance and in fact it may even have hurt it a little. It's worth noting that I did not gap my plugs wider though which may help you if you choose to do this.

I think that for a low speed off road rig the stock ignition is more then enough. An MSD is a waste of money unless you are running high rpm or a competion engine with lots of cubes and high compression.

I do know that it made a noticable difference in the 4.3L S-10 that I installed a 6AL on.

actually my experiance is to the contrary. with a low rpm carb motor i found the longer spark duration to help burn the extra fuel a carb spills in during high angle wheeling. in other words it helped the motor run great when crawling on my side.

That sounds reasonable. I was thinking more in terms of fuel injection since I have never run a carb on the trail.
