ok iv'e posted this on the binder bulletin and i didn't get much (one response) and i searched and didn't find anything. ok so i am rewiring my scout II and i cant figure out how to wire the steering column in the cab. i cant figure out how to take off the steering wheel base plate right behind the steering wheel (sort of triangular) without a steering wheel puller and in my new wiring kit there are like 4 more wires than are coming out of the column. im bewildered. any thoughts?

okay Scoutman who's wiring kit are you using/which one? As for the steering wheel puller I would suggest Autozone or checker's loan a tool program. As for the ammount of wires does your kit include cruise control wiring? How about a high beam column switch? Wiper controls? And which options does your steering wheel have on it? also are you rewiring from the switches or from the little blade style connector that provides a disconnect point for the steering column?
And sorry didn't see your post on binder bulletin.

Me

painless scout/landcruiser kit. it doesn't include cruise control. my steering wheel didn't have any accesories or anything from it. well i am talking about trying to get into the switches in the column or would it be better to do it from thte bigg connector coming out the back end of the column. as for wires going into it, just the turn signals and ignition key switch. does that make sence

That lockring ont he steering wheel is a biotch to get off. My local part stores did not have a lock ring compressor to loan. I had to rig it myself.

Then the next time I was at Sears  I noticed they sell one...so that should help you with the lock ring removal to get into the guts of the top of the steering wheel.

Best I remember there weren't any wires under there except the horn wires...don't know it that helps you or not.

Good luck..... :D

The Painless GM kit is the one that has the correct connector for your steering column. If you bought the Scout/Landcruiser it will not plug into the connector that you have. You will need to hook up each wire with a butt connector or use connectors. If you need to know what wire is what, let me know, and I can look in the service manual.

Damn Whitescout.... just when I think you might be dead, you pop back up and post a message. :flipoff2:

Okay I would wire from the blade style connector unless a switch is bad in the column or there is some other reason to go in there. At that point you might as well wire from the switches As for the wiring if you don't have a schematic I could make a list of the wires at the blade and post it. And I would suggest that you install some kind of disconnect at the steering solumn in case you want to upgrade to tilt steering or anything like that in the future.

If you haven't butchered up the harness maybe it would be easier to exchange it for a GM one, Summit is pretty good with cust service

well although it isn't butchered me and my dad have already hooked up engine headlights tail lights which didn't take long but everything is all hooked up and i don't really want to do it again. i dont think it is returnable anyways its got connectors here and there and so forth already on it oh yea and i have like 3 or 4 wiring diagrams for the scout so i am set for that

At least not on mine. Just the mechanical rod that runs down to the switch ontop of the steering column up under the dash.

I assume my column, 77 SSII, has a horn wire, and a two turn signal wires (unless it needs three, never ran down the signal wire system), but I have not had it apart to check.

I put that same kit on my SSII..........I will see if I have my notes on it..........I just hooked up every wire. There should be a guide that labels every wire. Did they give you a book and a scout helper book?

all that came with the kit was a book that gave a couple of instructions but nohin specific for the vehicle or diagrams specificly for the truck.

This may help......Any 9 could be a 7.....
ex. 917=717

I will keep looking if you need it.

Travis if I remember correctly we were lacking the proper harness for the steering column, hence your push button start:flipoff2:

A nice feature might I add

do you like that better, thepush button, than the switch in the column. i was thinkin about doing something like that for the start because it would be easier to wire up. anything negative about this setup?

The push bottem is nice.......I'll hide a switch for theft protection ;)

I still wired up the blinkers and the rest in the steering column.
