well...she aint much...and I am usually a Nissan man, but I picked this up for 1200 a week ago...and then the 33" tires with rims that were sitting in the back yard got to me, so I threw them on. The frontier in the back ground is going to undergo a SAS soon...so this Trooper will be my DD...

Is that a carry handle on the orange amigo?

Its the 3rd brake light... found only on '94 Amigos when first-gens are concerned. You'll notice the placement of the side mirrors where the "wing windows" were typically found. That is also a feature exclusive to the '94 models.

Man, I'm glad everyone is an expert. Maybe you could explain that to a real mechanic that the rear, especially after installing your new OME springs, needs to be aligned. Come on youi've heard of thrust angle....A rock crawler, probably no big deal, but this truck will be on the highway. I don't want the rear-end looking like it's going sideways. We've all seen "that" truck/car on the road.

I took it to a shop that works on my vehicles from time to time. He had to do some "adjusting" with those springs I got from you. I guess they are close enough to the originals to sell them to me, eh?

Independent4x
08-17-2007, 09:58 PM
hmmm, i was just poking fun at you in a friendly way

But, i see you are trying to dig at me a little....care to explain exactly what they did to "adjust the rear" on a leaf sprung truck.......and for that matter how exactly it was directly an issue specifically w/ the springs.....basically sounds like you think or are implying that the ARB/Old Man Emu springs are low quality. i'm interested to hear where you are coming from on this.

and to answer your question............briefly, the thrust angle is the angle between the thrust line and centerline. meaning: If the thrust line is to the right of center = positive & to the left = negative.......caused by rear wheel ( or in this case i guess you are saying rear axle misalignment) this can cause the steering to pull to one side and can be the reason for an off-centered wheel. correcting the rear axle or toe alignment will eliminate the thrust angle.

oh and for the record, i am an expert :flipoff2: :laughing:

Just replied and realized I was logged off, then lost all of what I wrote...let's try again.....

Yeah, all in fun.
No the quality, fit an finish of these springs is great (aside from a couple of broken plastic pieces, probably from shipping). The new springs are about 1 3/8" (1.381 to be exact) shorter which pushed the axle to the front that much off-centering my new Maxxis Bighorns and making everything look 'funny'. My mechanic (also brother-in-law) had to "ford" engineer the axle/leaf mounting pads to fix this. This also changed the pinion angle slightly (which was fine prior).

He used some sort of frame machine that, "costs more than your house." So you see why just re-installing some new springs wouldn't put everything back to spec. Everything needs to be sqaure, like a picture frame corner to corner.

Dr. Mechanic is right here reading this as I write. He's confused by your definition of thrust angle....don't worry, he got his ASE from a bubble gum machine.

Independent4x
08-18-2007, 08:36 AM
i guess you are saying they were shorter at "free" length eye to eye (off the truck on the floor)

that makes sense...the old ones are sagged and the new ones are, well ...new. On top of that they are more arched ...thus the "lift spring"

with some use they will settle a little, making them a little longer eye to eye.

the point remains...you did not do an alignment in the rear. :p ...what you are saying is that you needed to adjust the wheelbase.

throwing a term like thrust angle implies that the pins on the springs were in different places (or that the frame was crooked) making the rear axle sit crooked in the vehicle. (as if it were mounted in a parallelagram // , not a square II )

Just trying to clarify.

and just for the record.....Isuzu's are generally the same, but different.......there are BOATLOADS of sublte (pointless) variations in them. so it is hard to make blanket statements or applications for that matter. we have installed them on rodeos and troopes w/ great success. sounds like your pickup rear springs were "slightly different"

"costs more than your house."
highly doubtful............trailers is really really spensive round dese parts

Independent4x
08-18-2007, 08:48 AM
you know......also just crossed my mind.......i also have the rear springs from the Euro spec Pickups in stock. I could measure these as a comparative w/ your factory springs.

these have an offset pin - farther to the rear. They are actually too far back for a reg. rodeo/amigo.......be interested to compare them.

that makes sense...the old ones are sagged and the new ones are, well ...new.

Just trying to clarify.

and just for the record.....Isuzu's are generally the same, but different.......there are BOATLOADS of sublte (pointless) variations in them. so it is hard to make blanket statements or applications for that matter. we have installed them on rodeos and troopes w/ great success. sounds like your pickup rear springs were "slightly different"

highly doubtful............trailers is really really spensive round dese parts

ha, ha...no he was talikng about my house....

you know......also just crossed my mind.......i also have the rear springs from the Euro spec Pickups in stock. I could measure these as a comparative w/ your factory springs.

these have an offset pin - farther to the rear. They are actually too far back for a reg. rodeo/amigo.......be interested to compare them.

yeah definately on the measuring. so if the springs 'settle' then does the rear axle move further back? i can't believe that with the original springs and a hanger.
that the axle would move much on impact or rebound from center. if that's the case then everyone out there with lifts and big tires would rub when their leafs flexed.

My p/u was made in European state of Indiana. but I can imagine that many differences can come off the factory floor that would impact the spring/axle location.

when this hot Florida sun goes down tonight, I'll go out and measure from front eye to axle both on center just for the halibut.

That question/comment alone shows you don't know enough about the topic to be arguing.:shaking: Lift springs are the same flat length of metal as the original springs, except they have more arch. Now take something flat and put a bend in it; guess what, the two ends are now closer to one another:eek: Now take something that already has a bend in it and put even more of a bend in it (like lift springs); the two ends get even that much closer together:eek::eek::eek:

The forward spring hanger is a fixed location while the rearward hanger is mobile (via a shackle in most cases). That means all of the 'lost' length will act to pull the rear axle foward. You take a spring that has positive arch to it, stuff a tire and it moves further back as long as you aren't going so far as to invert the spring (at which point it would start to move forward); droop a tire and it will move forward. How much depends on the droop (or amount of lift, which is effectively changing the resting droop of a spring)... but it can be quite a bit. There is a picture of my truck floating around somewhere on a trail that really cycles your suspension. The passenger's-side rear suspension is at maximum droop and the location of the tire is such that, were it to travel straight up, it would be into the sheet metal by probably an inch. Luckily for me, the laws of physics exist where I live, so when the suspension returned to its resting state, the spring pulled the axle (and attached tire) rearward to a safe location within the wheel well. Maybe physics is just recently existing in your area and you're just not used to it yet.

PS. I still love the paint job... but coming on here with a pseudo-attitude and then asking a question that basic about the same topic...:shaking: The pinion angle will always change after a lift. You have three options for that: Decide its not enough to bother you and leave it, get some shims of the correct angle, or cut off and reweld the spring mounting pads with the pinion set at the correct angle.

[edit]This isn't enough of a side shot to see it clearly; but its still obvious that the tire is biased in a forward direction here with the suspension fully extended:

Love the porn star name, Sir Loin

Regarding the alignment thing...I guess it is a semantic technicality that is the sticking point here. No, you can't get a classic "alignment" on a rear live axle truck such as is done with independent rear suspensions . They are not designed for it, and there are no built in adjustment points. Now, if the axle is not perpendicular to the frame, or the frame isn't square, then of course this should be corrected, but that operation would not be an "alignment" in the classic sense...

Whatever. Semantics pissing matches are so exciting...:shaking:

But I can't help but notice the lack of pics lately on this "pic thread"...:flipoff2:

Yeah, sorry last post without pics I swear, more to come, fabbing up rear radiator mount.

Just quickly on the alignment (sorry, wrong term again) thing...you're right. Frame is square, four tires weren't, mecahnic squared them (the rear), drives better.
Removed springs, installed new ones and two things happened which mechanic fixed: (1)axle was forward and (2)not square due to leaf "pin" being significantly smaller than hole in pad, so there's the basics.

My fault for repeating what the mechanic called it.:) I didn't know we were in a pissing match....I though it was a dick measuring contest:grinpimp::grinpimp::grinpimp:

Thats a nice looking truck with alot of bling parts.
The more I look at it, I wonder what you are planing on doing with it?
The creature comforts have been removed, and the bed is full.
Not so good for DD or utility.
Are you doing any mods that are gonna make go further up the trail?
Lockers? sliders? low gears?
Or is it some kind of race truck? What kind of power are you getting out of that motor?

1) Power? Don't know, it's just a 60 degree'r. 140-145 if I'm lucky. Big cam, all the goodies, 390 Holley Carb. Carb? Yeah I know, but I don't see myself on too many inclines.
2)Race truck? Yes, that's what I built it for. It's street legal, not emission legal. Although a pro wouldn't race this.
3)Bling? That's all accident. The parts I've installed just happened to be shiny...I'm not a fan of chrome.
4)Mods? Yes. Lower gears to get the tires spinning faster and an LSD. Rear radiator mount which will double as harness anchorpoints...check 'em out, just started:

Wholly shit! Never thought of looking at the Isuzu section! There's some cool rigs in here. Have a couple of questions though. What axles are most commonly used for the swap? I saw a toy front end in one pic but how 'bout for the rear? Is the rear total junk like in a YJ?

RamAirZ
07-18-2010, 11:17 PM
Depends on what axle came in your starting rig but if it has the Isuzu 12 bolt or Dana 44 in the rear your doing alright. Up front some people use yota axles, some use full size axles, and a very popular swap is a full size cherokee (wagoneer) front axle as it matches the width pretty good. The Isuzu 12 bolt is compared to a Dana 44 but some say stronger, the modifed 12 bolt in the newer troopers is supposed to be almost like a 60 say some (not sure about that) but the 12 bolt and the Dana will be the most popular but there is also an Isuzu 10 bolt (not that great) and early Rodeo's used a GM 10 bolt for a few years which was crap.

Just sold my tow rig so I have to take it a little easy on the amigo so I can drive it home from the mountains. Thanks for noticing the top. I got a factory one for it (used) and it cost me $500. What a bonehead move on my part for losing the first one!

Just picked this up from a guy that lives down the street from me. Nothing special but a good start I think. '92 trooper, 160,000 miles. 3" body lift, 35's, rock sliders. Paid $1,000 for it. Not too happy about the BL. I'd rather it be suspension but oh well I can change that. Planning on building some bumpers and a snorkel and just wheeling it till it breaks.

Good looking troop, I'd just add a little suspension lift to it with the 35's and leave the body lift. Looks like he has sliders welded up to fit with it.

Leave the body lift huh? Most other trucks that have body lifts, people always say take them off. Never messed with one of these though. Seems like the biggest susp lift without steering/brake/etc modification is 2"? 5" total would be enough I would think. Planning on this being a cheap build. Maybe lock the front or something like that.

And yes the rock sliders are welded on. Glad you pointed that out. Just realised I can't tale off the body lift without removing those. Good thinking

I'd say 90% of the people that tell you to take the body lift off have never actually ran one. They have their place. I would always go suspension first and do body lift if you need the extra clearance and have maxed out your suspension, but seeing as how your truck already has it and the sliders welded up on it, I'd leave it. I was going to be running one on my passport but the new 34's clear fine without it (I had a set of 36" Irok's and some 35" BFG MT's I was going to use originally). You could probably get 4" out of the suspension but if I were you (key word budget build) I would look at some 2" coil spacers unless you can find some lift coils cheap, crank the front end 2", if you have the ability i would do a diff drop on it (1.5-2" drop) because with those 35's it'll make your CVs last much longer. I think with 2" suspension added, diff drop and lockers, you'd have a ball with it. Figure that with that setup on 35's you have about the same ground clearance as a 3" suspension lift trooper on 33's, which can get you through alot of trails no problem

Personally I'd leave it as it is and go with your first instinct, ie: wheel it till it breaks. I don't know what those things are generally worth over there but here in NZ a cheap one with those mods would probably sting you 3 times as much as you paid. Its a bargain, go have fun with it.

If you do crank the front up, I've found that 1.5" is about as far as you can go without seriously limiting the remaining extension of the IFS. Going further will most likely make the truck handle dangerously on the road (assuming you will use it on-road as well).

Check things like the crossmember under the trans - if its like the one I had you'll hang up on it all the time... and you can replace it with a bent-up piece of 3/8" x 4" flat bar and gain a good 1 1/2" or more of clearance.

Failing all else - SAS it :)

I'm with him on wheel till it breaks but on the 1.5" thing, I've had a minimum of 3" of lift on all my Zu's and none of them EVER drove bad. My 97' Rodeo was stiff out back but that was thanks to the long shackles and add-a-leaf. My VX, with coils like his Troop, was a DREAM to drive at 3" of lift. If you go over 2" I always suggest a ball joint flip and make sure you get your alignment done. After that it should drive like stock. As far as limiting the extension, low profile droop snubbers will give you some extra down travel (over stock bumpstops) but your total suspension movement won't change (you'll gain a little more total travel with low profile bump stops), you'll lose some downtravel but gain uptravel.

Well, just went to pick it up and pay for it. Ended up talking him down to $800 cash. I'm happy, pretty good deal I think. I'll do the suspension lift later, right now I'm just going to make a homebrew snorkel and wheel it. Proly just do 1-2" suspension lift, the thing is already huge.

 Is that typical of what they are worth over there, or did you get a bargain? Damn that is cheap. A good new set of 33" tyres would sting you $1400ish here.

And as for how high you push the IFS, its probably best if you do it yourself in small increments and see how it drives. Find the happy place between too much and not enough and leave it there :D

for reference, 35" tirese in my city cost about $1,400 ish depending on the brand

honestly ive never looked at one before this, was just searching "4x4" on CL under $2000 to try and find a decent project, and this popped up. from what ive seen, stock ones go for $2500-ish. KBB has it right at $3,000. this sounds stupid, but it was so cheap i just made sure it ran and the title was clean and didnt look at options or anything till i got it home. turns out it also has aftermarket manual hubs, air shocks in the rear, and an electric cooling fan. its the LS model with the DOHC 3.2, power/folding/heated mirrors, etc. from what i can tell, almost every option available.

it is missing the grill, has hood damage, and needs the headlight replaced, and the roof is oxidized. came with a replacement headlight, and im just going to sand down the roof and lay some clear coat over it. the reason i got it so cheap, the previous owner used it to pick up a friends recently purchased bike, turns out the bike was stolen, and hes being charged with -$20,000 theft so he needed the money. guess i just got lucky on his misfortune. my neighbor already offered me $1,200 for it. lol

what is a good axle for a SAS? cant find much info on them... a link to a how-to/build thread would be appreciated.

RamAirZ
04-24-2011, 08:10 PM
honestly I'd wheel it like it is for awhile but if your gonna SAS it a Toyota front axle works well and a Waggy D44 would be good as well (about the same width as your 12 bolt rear axle). Not sure of the build threads here but there are a few over on Planetisuzoo. Matt built one and made a hybrid Isuzu 12-bolt axle but I wouldn't go that route, $$$

kiwi_steve

Have a look at my buildup on it: http://www.4wdstuff.co.nz/himuzulux - there are a few others around. Also, google for Jarno Mu SAS - a guy called Jarno did one in Oz...

I used a Toy front axle, as they are easy to get over here, and 4.5 is the standard ratio in diesel (our normal powerplant for Toys) and most Isuzus here as well... Either that or they are 4.3, and thats another common Toy ratio.

ok cool, ill check out that site as well.

the SAS is not happening any time soon. realistically, id like to get this inspected/registered, and DD it/wheel it while the ramcharger gets a 12valve, 5 speed, and w250 suspension plus a lift. then, go back and DD/wheel the ramcharger while the trooper gets a SAS and maybe some lockers. whats the size limit yall run on these with stock drivetrain? im thinking 35's are as big as i want to go, maybe trim the fenders some for more flex room? if yall have any ideas on cheap mods or the like id love to hear them

largest tire with stock axles and everything? 35's is the typical max I see Trooper guys run just because of the IFS limiting the front end (the 12 bolt rear axle is quite strong). I'd just trim the fenders a bit, maybe add a coil spacer in rear and crank the front a tad just to give you a little more ground clearance but if you keep it stock height your CV angles will be better. If you have welding capabilities or someone that can you can drop your front axle and make some brackets to lower it down to correct CV angles after cranking the front up. It'll make your CV's last longer if you do a suspension lift.

rwhockey29
04-24-2011, 08:38 PM
i can weld, although im not sure id trust myself welding axle mounts. biggest ive done so far is some leaf spring hangers. sorry for all the questions, im relatively new at 4x4's(just turned 20) and my life goal is to never have a car or truck in the shop, so i do everything myself even if it takes longer.

RamAirZ
04-24-2011, 08:43 PM
If you can do the leaf spring hangers you could do the front axle mounts. There is no real "strain" on the axle itself since the CV moves up and down on each side so it's not like a solid axle:

so, just cut them out like in the picture, drop them down, add a piece above, and reweld? yea i could definitely do that

RamAirZ
04-24-2011, 09:25 PM
That's exactly how you do it. Keep the drop to a max of 2" though, the CV will contact the lower contorl arm if you go much more.

rwhockey29
04-24-2011, 09:38 PM
should it be relative to my lift? I.E. cranking my T-bars 1.5" = 1.5" drop? or just no more then 2"?

RamAirZ
04-24-2011, 09:43 PM
no more than 2" no matter how high you go. Honestly if you were gonna go 1.5 i'd just go up to 2" and call it a day. You could mod your lower control arms for slightly more drop but I wouldn't go that far with it. 2" diff drop would still work well with a 3" lift too.

rwhockey29
04-24-2011, 09:47 PM

RamAirZ
04-24-2011, 09:50 PM
eh won't get any from me, can't speak for everyone else. The 2" drop on teh axe will put the CV's a little lower than stock angle. I was saying you should do the 2" lift, but if your set on 1.5 I would just drop it 1.5 to keep your uptravel angles decent.

rwhockey29
04-24-2011, 10:17 PM
misunderstood then. wasnt thinking everything through. if i can go 2" safely with the axle drop and ball joint flip, ill do 2".

RamAirZ

Honestly you could do 2" without the balljoint flip but it's easy so why not. Here's some examples from my rigs, none of them babied:

1997 Rodeo, daily driver, hauled my kids for 2 years in it, about 4.25" of lift (ball joint flip up front and tbar crank, add-a-leaf and 3" lift shackle in rear) 33x12.50's:

1995 Honda Passport (rodeo), about 3.5-4" of lift (tbar crank and BJ flip up front, calmini 2" lift shackle and add-a-leaf) on 34x10.50 swamper LTB's, haven't gotten to wheel this one really yet, still finishing the front end (dropping diff, new ball joints, control arm bushings etc):

I think the beauty of this thread is that its not for the hardcore rock crawling boys - they probably don't even know it exists :D

I would think anyone reading it either has a 'Zu or is interested in them - and so you're unlikely to get crap from anyone. You've got a pretty good looking truck for sweet f. all cash. I'm looking forward to pics of you getting it dirty... :)

Oh, and as you can see from the last pic of RamAirZ's friends Amigo - the coil back ends can really flex up well... they're a simple yet good design with looong trailing arms and really all that limits them is the rear shocks... get some long ones in there and you can really twist 'em up.

rwhockey29

Yea I was surprised when I got under it and saw the 3-link rear. The previous owner installed air shocks for towing so I'm sure it doesn't flew all that good right now. I love this thing. Really surprised how nice it drives. If I could find a set of 2" springs for the rear cheap that'd be awesome, Caise I can do everything on the front for free besides the alignment. Also, the brake light is on.. Gotta check the parking brake sensor, brake fluid level, and bleed the brakes. Hopefully that does it so I can pass inspection soon.

Keep an eye out on the Planetisuzoo classifieds, I picked up my OME 912's for my VX for $100 and they were a month old. Your Trooper will flex better than that Amigo BTW with the 3-link'd rear, check this out (rear sway bar off with OME N85 shocks):

Having built many different Isuzu’s over the years I have come to the conclusion that if you aren't planning on taking on the Hammers or some such trails the IFS will serve you well.
Slap a little lift on the suspension, taller tires, add Tera Lows to the transfer case and lockers (either lunchbox or air lockers) and you will be amazed at the places you can go in almost stock form. Regearing the diffs can be expensive if you have to have super swamper tires and such. 33's to 35's will take you so many places you won't be disappointed. And remember you are wheeling near Texas unless you hit the Lotto. We don’t have that many HARD CORE ROCK CLIMBING places near by. All the Famous Hard Core Wheeling places are a long way from here! Why spend all that money for something you'll only be able to afford to do a few times.
My SAS Toy Axled Rodeo has been fun with it Marlin Crawler Transmissions, but had I followed own advice it would still be my daily driver.
Now it's a trailer queen or dang near it.
Wheeling in California, New Mexico and Utah are just too expensive now to be fun.
Clayton, Bridgeport, Barnwell and Uwarrie are still good fun places to go for a fun weekend of wheeling that are reasonably priced. Clayton being one of the closet hard core trail sets near you. Taking a trip to the Rubicon in California is a fun trip, but not something you can do for a weekend with a budget. I like Moab and try to get there for at least a week every couple of years, but my friends with their IFS's are able to follow me trough almost anything there that I attempted with my rig. The Tera Lows with lockers were their secret weapon. Very few places I went that they couldn't. And I have a butt load invested in my Rodeo. Them, not so much!

If you really want to have some fun, go find yourself a 1st Generation Trooper body and swap it over onto the Chassis under that one. It’s almost a bolt on. You'll lose 1000 lbs right off the bat and with some lockers and Tera Lows and suspension cranking you will be unstoppable. Do the diff drops and carry a spare CV joint for hard core wheeling and enjoy your with new toy. You'll have the better diffs and suspension parts. Without all the expense! 1st gens are cheap now especially now that they are getting long in the mileage department. A newer updated running gear will really amaze you on a budget.

I can help you with the diff drops if you don't mind a trip to my shop in Rhome TX. I work cheap BTY. It's a Hobby! Maybe even the body swap, as I have the shop lifts and all the tools to do one.

Trailer Queens just don't make good economic sense in today’s economy unless there is and Apocalypse soon.
I’ve been looking for a deal just like what you found for one of my 1 gen bodies I have.

Something to think about!

Great advice man! For 99% of the wheeling MOST of us see, these trucks will do just fine with the right combo of parts and good driver. I was going to SAS my Passport but decided against it because it's simply not needed where I wheel. That'd be sweet to see teh 1st gen body swap done. I'm actually thinking about an idea for lower gears in the Passport (6.5:1 tcase, mmmmmmmm)

I have the Factory Spec Sheets on the frames and the body mounting points are so close it's unreal. Would be so easy to do a full 1 st gen body swap. Plus a creative person could adapt the 1st Gen rear Fuel tank to the new Trooper chassis real easy, since the 1st gen bodies have a spare tire mount on the rear door.
So double tanks with factory skid plate would be almost a no brainer.
Can you tell I've lost sleep dreaming about this swap?

Good call on nixing the SAS on a daily driver. Mine is so soft for the big trails it makes it almost no fun to drive in traffic. But my trips to Rubicon and places west were a blast. But they didn't last, as it was just too expensive to do often. And right now I've gotten a broken R& P in my Toy front axle.

On my first trip to Moab with the Isuzu Guys I was so disapointed in my truck as I had invested over $10K in it's off road stuff and to find an IFS Rodeo in my mirror on all but the most EXTREME trails. What a big let down. I was able to go a few places they couldn't, but not $10K worth of places. And they were always able to find another way around the big honker rock face I found so challenging to go over.

I have 2 SAS'ed Isuzus and they are my last ones. One a Rodeo with a Toy front axle and one 86 Trooper with a Dana 44 Front. My next Isuzu Rig I build will be a 1st gen bodied, Blown 3.5 with TOD Automatic with Tera Lows and lunchbox lockers running 33's and 4:77's on a 3rd gen chassis with 10 bolt and 12 bolt diffs.
Then I'm going to finish my other 86 TD Trooper with a new MUA5 tranny and Tera Lows and 35's setting on an 89 1st Gen Chassis with ARB rear and luchbox up front.

I have to ask. How are you going to get a 6.5:1 T case? Did I miss the memo? I have been out of the loop building motorcycle these last few years! All of my Tera Lows are 3.07:1 and I don't see enough room in that case for anything bigger. You planning on adding a second auto t case? I have one of those too. Just never found a rig to put in it. Doublers are fun, but unpractical unless you're adding a Ditch Witch digging bar on your Isuzu. Or live in Nevada.

I have 6 Isuzus so I guess you could say I'm a big fan of the Brand!

To the OP, I'm jealous! $800 bucks!!!!!!! WOW!

Ya I can tell you've been having fantasies about that build lol. My Passport isn't a DD it's just a toy but even then the SAS isn't needed out here, there isn't anything my VX couldn't do out here. As for the TOD automatic, you'd be losing the TOD to run the tera-low's wouldn't ya. I'm not a fan of TOD anyways, I was going to swap the TOD case in the VX out for a standard one. Sounds like you have some sweet ideas too, on the 6.5:1 case I'm looking at swapping in a 2wd trans and running the divorced Sammy 6.5:1 tcase, I could either run a CV rear shaft to help with the offset case output or swap in a rear Waggy D44 since it is offset. It's just a brainstorming idea right now but I think if I can pull it off it would be sweet. the crawl ratio with 4.30's and 34's would be almost double what 34's with tera-lows and 5.38's would be. I've also been tossing the idea of drpoping in a blown 5.3 into it and even a 6.2 Diesel. Ya it's not the most sought after diesel but they are efficient, get good MPG and are cheap lol

Thanks RamAir that clears up the gera ratio question I had.

I love the VX's I just ran out of money before I got my hands on one.

The reason for the TOD is it would be my wifes DD.
I have been told by the guy that knows that the TOD can be reprogrammed to work better than a normal Auto Tranny for off road.
Havn't gotten into one yet so I don't know the details completely.
I could have just miss remembered.

I have most of my parts other than the 3rd Gen Trooper.
And I have 2 sets of 5:38's. One set already in some ARB 10/ 12 bolt Diffs, a backup set. Wasn't sure how long they would be on the market so I bought spares. I also have a set of 10/ 12 bolts with 4:77's and Lunchbox's built. Things you do when you've got money!!!!!!

Now that I'm retired I miss that disposable income.

And Obammy & Company arn't helping any either.

my friend is talking shit about how his k5 on 33's and 8" lift is gonna romp me on the trails and in the mud... so we made a deal. when we go this weekend, if i have to pull him out, i get to tag his windows with "recovered by a Jap" for a week. i think hes in for a surprise.

one more question.. on the air intake(stock) the tube that has the screw clamp to the box, i measure and its ID is right at 2.75". thinking about grabbing some spare exhaust pipe in 2.75" and make a snorkel, and just making the stock air intake tube clamp onto it... thoughts?

The snorkel idea would work. A few guys have done it that way. You could plug the intake hole at the bottom of the box, drill a hole inside the box near the fender and jbweld the pipe in there so you can keep the stock airfilter setup and run the snorkel out the fender. As for your buddy with the K5, I bet you have more ground clearance than he does ;) And if you out-wheel him, take pics. I wheel with alot of Jeep guys out here and the first time I went out with the VX, they were amazed what I made it through that they couldn't, basically I followed the Rubicon everywhere while the standard jeeps were getting stuck all day lol.

Snorkel made easy 101!

For you 1st Gen guys let me kick start your brains. Don’t blame me if you don’t get any sleep tonight.

So you want a Snorkel? Here’s what I came up with on an old body I had laying around. I tried it here before I mess up a working truck, since it was a rather evasive idea. And yea, I've done this to several Troopers but none are her to show you the finished product. Use your imagination!
This system uses the stock 2.3 L air cleaner but reroutes the air intake.
Here’s the stock one.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c369/Curtis-J/DSC02385.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c369/Curtis-J/DSC02384.jpg
Not real hard to do.

See the hose piece on the left. Go to the junk yard and grab another one. IIRC this one is off a 3.2 L V 6, but even the 2.3L breather tube will work, off a 2.3L engine. You just have to cut the oval air cleaner part off.

See the hole where it comes out? I used some door trim to protect it from cuts from the sheet metal. The only thing you'll have to do if you have airconditioning is move the plumbing down for clearance.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c369/Curtis-J/DSC00443.jpg

I used a 3 inch hole saw to make these holes.

Bore your firewall just left of the hood hinge and into the washer arm cover plate.
You will need to make an “L” bracket, sorry I don’t have a picture of it, to screw to the bottom of the air box hole to act as a limiter to keep the hose from interfering with wiper arm arc. You’ll figure it out, it’s not rocket science. The breather hose is very flexible so it’s not going to bother it to have the bend in it. I used a piece of angle iron about 1 inch wide to make the “L” bracket.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c369/Curtis-J/DSC00440.jpg

The breather hose does not interfere with the hinge so don’t worry about that. But it will interfere with the wiper arm, so be sure and use the “L” bracket. You can screw it down with a metal screw by accessing through the big top hole you drilled in the body top.
You’ll have to figure out where to put the “L” bracket so you have clearance.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c369/Curtis-J/DSC00439.jpg

Then you can use a piece of exhaust tubing up the windshield frame and top it off with what ever floats your boat. Let me give you an idea for the top hat that is easy and cheap.
Get a stainless Dog bowl and make some bracket to attach it with some screen to keep the birds out of it. In case you’re wondering, with this set up you will be using the stock air cleaner. Just rerouting the intake to the firewall and out to the snorkel.

Just thought I’d throw this out in case some of you want a snorkel, but don’t have $500 lying around. On mine I made my HAT removable so I could take the tall tube out and put the hat on low in front of the wndshielld like on the H1 Hummers. (So don't go crazy with the dog bowl size if you're going to use this idea!) Then the taller tube stored under the seat for high water fording.
Pop some nut serts on the windshield post for quick removal. Plug them with the bolts to keep water out of your post.

Clear as MUD?

I've been wheeling that for the past 10 years or so...modifying along the "standard" lines...3" sl, then 3" bl, 33's, etc. I've only ever broken a stock tie rod.

I recently bought this for a steal. It needs some work, but overall, for the price, it's awesome.

11-20-2011, 07:47 PM
I've been considering it, but I really don't plan on going much bigger than a 37" tire, and 1 tons will soak up alot of clearance, probably be about as much as I have now with 34's. Honestly my IFS has gotten me through everything I've wanted (when it's all working lol) and I keep debating with myself if I should just leave it. It's not my DD, it's just a cheap playtoy. I have maybe $1500 in the whole thing including purchase so I've tried to keep the mindset that it's just a fun toy. My other ones were in great shape and I was less likely to do stuff that risked body damage lol.

I know that but most of the SAS swaps Ive seen, and this is personal opinion, look like garbage. The Trooper looks goofy as hell with a huge amount. If 35s fit like that with 3" of lift, I think if I could figure out about 4" with a SAS keeping it the same height, I would be very happy.

Gotcha, Matt at Indy did a build on a 2nd gen RS and kept his pretty low:

http://independent4x.com/encapsgallery/rwx_gallery/93RSMARCH2009.jpg

I'm with you on the SAS swaps that have a ton of lift and running 35's. If it's going to have a huge amount of lift then match the tires. I think alot of people do it that way because if your going to stay low and on 35" or smaller tires, the IFS will get you by pretty good with slightly better front clearance. But the SAS will get you more flex/stability on most obstacles. I'm going to be keeping mine fairly low as well.

AlexXx

Personally if the troop ever gets to that point of a SAS. I would just cut to fit to keep it low. My trooper has trimmed front fenders and the rear is going to cut to. I also don't like 35's on SA rigs, go with 4d's or go to the mall! :D

Interesting rear chop. Are you going to leave it without the rear corners?

On my stretch build I'm not doing it to off road it and beat on it on the trails. I aready have two of those! My intention for this truck is to drive it on the street wether they be icy or wet and tow it behind my Motorhome. The reason for the stretch will be to be able to carry my motorcycle and the wifes scooter in the bed. The Grandkids will be most of my passengers.

This is what I have envisioned it will look like.

I've spent a lot to time drilling out spot welds on this body already.
I've decided to use the Isuzu Pickup rear window even though it's too long.
I can cut about 2 inches out of the center and spot weld the aluminum frame back together to make it fit around a custom rear frame. I have two of these pickup windows so if I mess one up I can still make it work.
You'll notice the rear cap has been moved up already and tacked on.

Here's the back half of the 2 door that will be the bed of this rig.
The Roll Bars will come off of course!

If all goes as planned it will have a 3.0L TD with a brand spanking new MUA5 that will include Tera Lows that I have sitting in it's crate. (I did remove it to install the Tera Lows.)

Like I said earlier, I have all the parts other than the engine to do this project. I've even set my shop up with a frame jig to do this stretch by myself. (I don't work well with others I guess!!!!!)

Just need some time now.

I'll be taking the skins off my rear doors and using that metal for the tailgate. I have two sets of doors so the 2 long side door skins will be mated in the middle for a center seam. I have a tailgate from an Isuzu pickup and will be using the end caps (modified) and hinges from it to make a tail gate for the Trooper. It will fold down just like a pickup.

Rodeo any progress?

Actually not a lot. But in my defense I got into Adventure Motorcycles a few years ago and have been building parts for those. Even started selling some of the stuff I make. Been lots of fun building them for me and my friends and my Isuzu's has just been waiting patiently for me to get back to them. To many places to ride my bikes. Even going to Moab this summer on one with some friends.

255/85r16 km2's on 16x7 wagons with 4" backspace. They are actually taller then the 285/75r16's on my diesel in the background
no spacers
they measure right around 33" tall and about 9.5 wide on the tread 10.5 for the whole tire

Uh, your spare tire is mounted on the wrong side of the door!
