: Front Shackle Mount idea

Yea, I know, I'm being cheap, but I thought about this last night. (The wife and I are having a baby, so I need to save any money I can)

I have a 76 CJ, and am putting YJ springs on it. The rear, no problem, 2.5" wide springs.

But the front is "all wrong", 2" springs.

So, I was thinking. Why can't I cut the main leaf eye off of the old rear springs (cut it about 4" long) and use that as my "new" front shackle mount?

I can get the holes drilled, drill the frame, and mount it in there. Any problem with that as you see it?

You can do that, but you will find that it is very dificult to drill through spring steel and you should not weld them to the frame. I found a junk frame in a yard and had them cut the back off for me and I was able to remove the rear hangers and bolt them up to the front.

you can use stock rear shackle hangers on the front also. I would be to worried about the spring steel cracking and breaking from drilling it and the extra force on it. If you do it that way just keep your eye on them!

RokToy,

Yea, that was my concern too. I can spend the money if I have too, but if I can be cheap, I will. :D

Thanks guys.

I did a front/rear YJ spring swap on my gf's '74 CJ, I torched and ground all the old mounts off, had new hangers bent up out of 3/16's steel did a SR on the front and used old springs at the shackel end, I made them about 6 inches long drilled two half inch holes in them and the fame then bolted it all together. It's woring out great so far, the YJ springs ride and flex so much nicer.

Cut the spring about 18" long, bolt them to the frame using square U-bolts and then you have a set of 3/4 elliptical buggy springs.

Or go down and pick up some 1 1/2 pipe and some angle iron an weld up your own.
